I am also looking for the feature to work with tags in the way, that only specified tags should be applied, and if there is no tag specified - then it should execute nothing... are there already any progress how to implement this?

 Tags are clearly very useful for limiting which code is being run. What I truly need is to only run some things if a tag is set. Right now we have to limit what we run with tags, but control whether to run things with environments, which is silly.

Boban Glisovic please don't re-open old tickets its just not our style, please raise a new bug, and if you can provide the exception and configuration when you see the error that would be appreciated.
Also, just out of interest I'm curious why you would think this would fail, the code in my patch doesn't call that ^^ save method directly, it calls this one in the indirection class:
https://github.com/puppetlabs/puppet/blob/master/lib/puppet/indirector/indirection.rb#L277-L289
I presume you were picking up the difference in arity anyway.
Anyway, please raise a new bug with more detail, and reference this ticket.

Jira (PUP-2984) MSI downgrade from x64 to x86 does not remove PuppetLabs folders in Program Files due to File System Redirection with 32bit msiexec

  Re: MSI downgrade from x64 to x86 does not remove PuppetLabs folders in Program Files due to File System Redirection with 32bit msiexec

Hold on there. This is something we plan to fix before release.
tl;dr: This is an issue ONLY with file system redirection and the C:\Program Files install path. Every other scenario, including custom directories not inside program files works correctly. MSI updates the PATH correctly except when hit by file system redirection.
Let's be sure we have the facts straight on what MSI does with PATH:

On upgrade or to a new path, it does remove the old path. This works with x86 - x86 and x86 - x64:

C:\Users\Administratorecho %PATH%
C:\tools\ruby200\bin;C:\tools\ruby193\bin;C:\Windows\system32;C:\Windows;C:\Wind
ows\System32\Wbem;C:\Windows\System32\WindowsPowerShell\v1.0\;C:\Program Files (

gram Files (x86)\Puppet Labs\Puppet\bin

C:\Users\Administratorrefreshenv
Reading environment variables from registry. Please wait... Done.

C:\Users\Administratorecho %PATH%
C:\tools\ruby200\bin;C:\tools\ruby193\bin;C:\Windows\system32;C:\Windows;C:\Wind
ows\System32\Wbem;C:\Windows\System32\WindowsPowerShell\v1.0\;C:\Program Files (
x86)\Git\cmd;C:\Program Files (x86)\Git\bin;C:\ProgramData\chocolatey\bin;C:\Pro
gram Files\Puppet Labs\Puppet\bin;

Specifying a different path on installation still cleans up the PATH (x86 - x86 and x86 - x64):

C:\echo %PATH%
C:\tools\ruby200\bin;C:\tools\ruby193\bin;C:\Windows\system32;C:\Windows;C:\Wind
ows\System32\Wbem;C:\Windows\System32\WindowsPowerShell\v1.0\;C:\Program Files (

C:\echo %PATH%

x86)\Git\cmd;C:\Program Files (x86)\Git\bin;C:\ProgramData\chocolatey\bin;C:\Pup
pet\bin;

x64 - x86 is the only installation with problems. This is due to Windows File System Redirection. It literally cannot see the program files path because it is being pointed to (x86). Therefore it doesn't find C:\Program Files\Puppet Labs because it is looking for C:\Program Files (x86)\Puppet Labs.

For instance, let's see what happens when we go to a custom install path for x64 and then

  Re: MSI downgrade from x64 to x86 does not remove PuppetLabs folders in Program Files due to File System Redirection with 32bit msiexec

Any process launched when x86 was installed, will still have the old puppet in their PATH after the upgrade to x64 (and vice-versa). At best, those processes may need to be restarted. At worst, the other process is a service, and the machine may need to be rebooted.

Yes, but there is no good solution for this. Even passing an explicit path to Puppet for a service/process doesn't solve this issue when it is still running and an upgrade happens. At the very least MSI and Windows may signal those processes that the environment path has changed.
This is done with SendTimeOut (but doesn't affect CLI, see discussion https://github.com/chocolatey/chocolatey/issues/134#issuecomment-8560983):

if ($ApplyImmediately)
{
if (-not (Win32.NativeMethods -as [Type]))

# import sendmessagetimeout from win32
Add-Type -Namespace Win32 -Name NativeMethods -MemberDefinition @
[DllImport(user32.dll, SetLastError = true, CharSet = CharSet.Auto)]
public static extern IntPtr SendMessageTimeout(
IntPtr hWnd, uint Msg, UIntPtr wParam, string lParam,
uint fuFlags, uint uTimeout, out UIntPtr lpdwResult);
@
}

$HWND_BROADCAST = [IntPtr] 0x;
$WM_SETTINGCHANGE = 0x1a;
$result = [UIntPtr]::Zero

# notify all windows of environment block change
[Win32.Nativemethods]::SendMessageTimeout($HWND_BROADCAST, $WM_SETTINGCHANGE, [UIntPtr]::Zero, Environment, 2, 5000, [ref] $result);

  Re: Facter is very slow when large number of network interfaces exist

Pulling over comments from the initial PR (https://github.com/puppetlabs/facter/pull/739):
To summarize the IRC convo: 1) concern with this approach is it would disable legit/current uses for tap interfaces 2) we also discussed a much narrower filter based on a regex mapping neutron interface-naming conventions - the concern there was that it was too vendor-specific, and could be wedded to particular neutron releases (and then facter x.y would only support neutron j.k release or somesuch) 3) we also discussed adding a facter config file that allowed custom filtering of facts 4) and then last idea was memoizing ifconfig output
I think (3) or (4) would both work and would be of general value. (3) will take some discussion and requires some action by interested parties, but has the most generality. (4) is an optimization specific to retrieving network facts, and could be worth pursuing.

I think instead of 4, it might be worthwhile to consider pulling the data directly from /sys/class/net/. I think this is at least as stable of an interface as ifconfig is and it's dramatically faster. On the same system, Ansible can gather facts in about 12 minutes, vs 75+ for facter. Jira (PUP-1085) Pacman provider constantly reinstalls package groups on arch linux

2014-08-05 Thread Paul Schyska (JIRA)
Title: Message Title

 Paul Schyska commented on an issue

  Re: Pacman provider constantly reinstalls package groups on arch linux

I looked at the code and I see why this is happening. `pacman -Qg` will print out every locally installed package which is tagged as belong to a group and prints out group pkgname lines. The code takes all unique values from the first column and treats these groups as installed. As long as one package is installed with happens to belong to a group, the whole group is considered to be installed. For example, just installing xfwm4, which belongs to the xfce4 group, causes the code to assume the whole xfce4 group is installed. To improve this part, the group packages should be listed and compared with the present instances, and missing packages installed. This would also handle the case where a package gets added to a group, as it would be missing from then on and the pacman provider would treat the group as not fully installed.
The ensure = latest case will issue a pacman -S xfce4, which will install the latest versions of all of xfce4's packages. The result here is fine, as they happen to be the latest versions known in any case, as the author noted. To prevent the constant re-installation of packages one could add --needed to the pacman command line, which will only upgrade outdated packages and install missing ones. This still feels like a hack though so maybe it can be refactored to use the logic above.
Would you accept a patch for this?

 This was an old synonym for `recurse = true`, but it only makes sense in a world where you can also set integer values for `recurse` instead of using `recurselimit`... which you can't do, anymore.

tests/modules/install/with_version.rb assumes that the puppet command is on the default PATH. It is not when we are deploying puppet-enterprise (and would not be when we deploy Windows tests using MSIs)
This should use the beaker puppet helper, even though we probably need to fight with it a little to make it work right in this case
