When running facter as unprivileged user, virtual fact is falsely set to physical, although correct value can be deduced from lspci system command. Unfortunately, regex matching of lspci output in lib/facter/virtual.rb is done on lowercase value:

Title: Message Title Kenneth Barber commented on PDB-1129 Re: puppetdb anonymize should use stronger hash function Yep Wyatt Alt is correct here, our use of hashes in general in PuppetDB is for pseudo-uniquely identifying a report/catalog/fact document in our database for performance reasons so the comparison is fast (versus comparing the entire document), not for hiding secret data. In fact, the only thing we generally care about when it comes to the original data is keeping the shape (like keeping it as a hash/array/string/number etc.). New random data is generated using various randomization functions (like randomizing strings/numbers/booleans etc.) and this data has no relation to the original data beyond just the 'shape'. As Wyatt says, we have to generate a new hash of the document after anonymization, which is why we do it in that code. So the use of sha1 hashing here by itself shouldn't provide a way to utilise brute force and determine its original form, if that's what you are concerned about. If the anonymization is ran correctly, any passwords should be replaced with useless strings only - chances are they won't even confirm to any crypto format to be honest after anonymization, we're just not that clever today, we just throw out random strings of characters instead . So I don't think we should panic here, the use of lesser grade algorithms isn't always a security issue, it all depends on the context for how they are used . These are always going to be binary blobs. The example I gave was about whether we remove text/plain network format entirely. Currently, it's only used for cert pem files, which are guaranteed to be US-ASCII. But I can imagine a scenario where we want to be able to transfer a text file between two systems that have different encodings, and we need to transcode appropriately. The agent and master would need to include the charset consistently to make that happen, and of course, the agent and server don't. So ok, let's remove text/plain and we can revisit that if/when the need arises. It is currently only possible to support different versions of logic/content that is used server side. There is no way to have different/multiple versions of facts, resource types, or providers because there is no way to encode this in the catalogs sent to agents. The new loader system in Puppet 4.0 is used for loading 4x functions. These loaders only make functions visible to a module if it is from a module listed as a dependency of that module. For backwards compatibility the loaders will make everything on the modulepath visible to a module if the module metadata does not contain any dependencies at all (as opposed to have an empty dependency entry, in which case it gets no visibility into other modules). The idea is to use these loaders to load other puppet objects as well (classes, defines, etc.). The 4x loaders can easily be modified to support additional module concepts, such as reexporting; one module A depends on another X, and makes it contents visible to those that depends on A (without those having to know anything about X). While it is possible to support such extra features (re-export, and similar), the full extend of what is described in this epic requires new versions of the catalog, how resource types are implemented, and how they are stored in puppetdb. This manifests as either problems finding the new extensions, or that the default 'none' is not found. A preliminary investigation shows that there are issues with the PuppetX name space which is used as puppetx in some places and puppet_x in other. This ended up being wrong when the injector was made to stop squatting on the PuppetX namespace. There also seems to be an issue with the injector handling multiple contributions to a multibind - either in general or specifically for the configuration of the data providers. Add Comment

Eli pointed this out on IRC and we discussed another conceptual issue. The namevar is an alias, a non-unique entry, when the IP address has uniqueness. For instance:
host { '127.0.0.1': name = '127.0.0.1', host_aliases = ['localhost', 'localhost4'], ip = '127.0.0.1', }
host { '::1': name = '::1', host_aliases = ['localhost', 'localhost6'], ip = '::1', }
{code] ... seems to work better with a unique namevar. It's a little more verbose and the 'ip' parameter becomes redundant as far as I can tell. This would obviously cause breakage, though.

I'd like to start a discussion here: if we're going to push users from something relatively easy and constrained to something else, I believe the something else shouldn't be an indirector face, because they're whatever the opposite is of easy, constrained, and fit-for-particular-purpose. I really hate those auto-generated find/destroy/etc. interfaces, and do not get me started on --terminus. Let's decide what the use cases are for getting facts via Puppet's CLI, intentionally design a nice bare-bones interface for doing those things, and replace the current puppet facts. If we can.
