In the example, the backslash newline sequence simply means newline. The same result is produced without the backslash as strings in puppet can extend over multiple lines and will include the line endings. In 4.0.0 (and in 3x with --parser future) you can use Puppet Heredoc to get more control over the string, including line-continuations. The escapes are controlled by using flags in the heredoc (the \L in the opening tag turns on line continuation), and you can control where the left margin which enables indenting it and removing the white space (margin) on the left side - as in this example. content => @(END/L), This is the content. I think there is very little we can do about this short term. You have to find another way to organize your manifests to achieve what you want. Suggest asking on the mailinglist how others handle similar use cases. After puppet 4.0.0 the intent is to work on a new resource, catalog and compiler. The flaw described here "you cannot know all the places a class was included from" as well as "you cannot state the same resource more than once; there is no merging" are issues we are going to address. I am associating this ticket with the Epic that is about the reimplementation. The problem is we are working with an ENC to assign some classes to nodes, so we are not able to control the class interpretation order.
I just wrote a minimal source code that can help you to reproduce this behavior, I hope, this will help you to resolve that issue :

I say possibly because you could argue that tagging of a class should take place even it has already been included, but OTOH, it is clearly stated that classes are only evaluated once. Puppet simply does not handle multiple containment, and tagging is based on containment. I suggest you discuss with other puppet users on the mailinglist what your options are for changing your design. If TK is going to keep support this, then we shouldn't bother dropping it really, because other platforms might use it, and therefore we lose cross-platform consistency etc. etc. This is really largely a documentation task.Also of note, if we do this, we should migrate in puppetdb ssl-setup for the user, right now we bail and refuse to continue. You will want to make sure that the timeout is larger than the biggest catalog you expect to process, as well as the amount of time it takes the agent to send the report, and have the master process the report, potentially by multiple report processors. If your timeout is too short, then the reboot can leave behind the pid file. That said, the agent should be more robust in the face of failures. The code in lib/puppet/util/pidlock.rb handles locking and reclaiming of the pidfile. Note there are a few pidfile bugs filed in this area already, so you might want to check those out first. Either way, we want to release at the same time, or just before Puppet 4.0.0 releases, so our users can find compatibility with a PDB 2.3.0 release. I don't believe they would change the situation at all. To start, it looks like Debian relies on the value of /etc/hostname, rather than /etc/hosts. More importantly, this just makes it so that you can properly manage the hosts file with the Puppet language, but if you were already managing it with Puppet then you would have already had to deal with any local-system hostname issues. My proposed changes to the host type shouldn't necessitate any additional work on that front beyond updating your host resources to work with the new API.
