Jira (PUP-4791) puppet should also have a gem sub-command

  Re: puppet should also have a gem sub-command

John Ferlito You should be able to do this today using the puppet_gem package provider, either in a puppet manifest, or from the command line:

# /opt/puppetlabs/bin/puppet resource package jira-ruby ensure=0.1.11 provider=puppet_gem

Notice: /Package[jira-ruby]/ensure: created

package { 'jira-ruby':

  ensure => ['0.1.11'],

}

Note there is also a gem provider. The difference is that puppet_gem manages the gems in puppet's vendored ruby, whereas gem manages system gems.
If that's sufficient, could you please close this ticket?

Josh Cooper Hmm i could probably do that but it doesn't feel quite right. In this case I need gems install for facts that I have in puppet. So to some degree it is part of the puppet bootstrap process.
So I'm not sure that it makes sense to do that with puppet itself.
I suppose I would say that of it makes sense for puppetserver to expose the gem command then puppet should get it to?

Jira (PUP-4525) install_options confused on the way to `gem`

  Re: install_options confused on the way to `gem`

The gem provider allows the version to be specified in the ensure property:

  package { 'somegem':

ensure   => '~> 3.0',

provider => gem,

  }

This syntax has worked for awhile, but prior to 4.2.0 (see

PUP-4131
), puppet would not realize a gem was already installed that satisfied the constraint, and would try to reinstall the gem every time it ran. That part is now fixed in 4.2.0, and I'm marking this as a duplicate.
That said, I wouldn't recommend using puppet to install itself that way. You will eventually run into a situation where you have old code in memory loading new code that was just installed, and two will not be compatible.

Thank you otheus for your detailed debugging. This is actually a duplicate of PUP-2608, both the plugin and pluginfacts mount points have the same problem. I'm going to close this as a dup, but mentioned your notes in the other bug. Thanks again!

We keep getting reports of this very old issue, see PUP-3655 and

PUP-3324
. It would be good to fix this, as it's alarming to get errors during the agent run (which are ignored). otheus has a good write up in https://tickets.puppetlabs.com/browse/PUP-3655?focusedCommentId=134723&page=com.atlassian.jira.plugin.system.issuetabpanels:comment-tabpanel#comment-134723 about what's going on, and ideas for how to move forward.

This was fixed in commit 691056ee3 for

PUP-2349
. The change was pretty similar to the fix Andrew Parker proposed above.
