The current (3.x scope) implementation acts very much as a router for all kinds of functionality and it acts as self in 3.x function implementations and ERB templates. In order to enable migration, the 3.x function implementation and ERB wrapper implementation must change so that self is class (Scope3xCompatibility) that responds to the same public methods as Scope and delegates those to a 3.x Scope that it has a reference to. There should probably be subclasses specific to 3.x functions and ERB. All methods that are considered private should issue a deprecation warning. Methods considered public should not, unless there are methods we absolutely have to block. The reason for not deprecating everything is that the 3.x functions eventually will be deprecated and removed along with the ERB support. Deprecation messaging should suggest moving to the 4.x APIs instead of just patching the 3.x implementation. We would really like to single out implementations that are based on access to the calling scope or those that modify the contents of either calling or closure scope. John D and I were discussing how when you invoke puppet preview --environmentpath some_bogus_directory ... the error message indicates subcommand preview is not found. (was filed as pre-58) I tried that construction for all the listed subcommands from puppet help, and discovered the preview was the only subcommand that gave that error message. John observed that preview is the only module-implemented subcommand that has an entry in the list of subcommands from puppet help. I just checked and preview does not show up on the list when it is not installed. When strings is installed, there is a sub-command listed for it in puppet help. The behavior behavior of preview (appearance of subcommand, reporting non-existent subcommand when environmentpath is wrong) is the same as strings. I no longer think that preview should be removed from the list in puppet help. I will close this bug. I still think when puppet's error message reports that preview (or strings) is not a subcommand when the environmentpath parameter is wrong is misleading to the user. I will file this as a separate bug (not a fault of preview or strings). This could be done with simple echo on the post-upgrade block in ezbake perhaps. What do you think? Another solution is that we could add hooks to the terminus upgrade that displays a similar message, but I don't want to drag this out much longer ... so perhaps we can shelve that idea for later and rely on release notes and this best effort for the time we have. We think this issue is bigger than the current problem, we may want a better handling around this in the future, as its a problem we've always suffered, but its probably not worth it right now. In short, restart puppetserver after a termini upgrade is one idea, but I don't want to rush into this kind of thing. There is no such thing as a top scope that spans all possible environments. While it would be possible to make it possible to retrieve the effective environment directory it is too late as the hiera configuration has already been established. Adding new top scope variables is also an anti-pattern. This is not something that we are going to change for hiera as such. Instead, the solution is the support for data in modules which will make it possible to define hiera data in modules and environments. See PUP-4474. Writing that produced catalog to a file, and they applying it with puppet apply --catalog file also works. The problem must be in the transfer of the catalog - when deserializing, or when interpreting the resource reference: Notify[/srv/company(/[^/]*)?] Which looks like a very familiar problem where brackets in titles caused problems elsewhere (now fixed). I didn't even think about removing the old locations of things we also migrate (/var/lib/puppetdb, etc). I feel uncomfortable moving any of the config files we're not explicitly dealing with since that's default behavior of the packaging system (note, rpm will clean up all old config files unless you've modified them). I can also add a message in the postinst script that reminds the user to upgrade termini/us and restart puppet server if that is desired. That is: If the exit codes are mis-behaving such that there's no way to tell if a puppet run succeeded or not, that's probably the biggest impact to users. If they're behaving such that they can tell if the run succeeded or not, but not distinguish between a run that changed something and a run that had no changes, that's still impactful but probably less so. Beyond that there's probably diminishing impact to users. That's about it. Dan Bode might be able to provide a bit more impact data from real-world customers. I recall that him describing a solution that relies on exit codes in order to run puppet again again and again until there were no changes detected. That is to say, the exit codes were used to know when the distributed system converged onto a configuration, or not.
