Jira (PUP-6347) new function (String): programmatic representation escapes for Ruby language and not Puppet
Title: Message Title Henrik Lindberg updated an issue Puppet / PUP-6347 new function (String): programmatic representation escapes for Ruby language and not Puppet Change By: Henrik Lindberg Acceptance Criteria: * All strings containing backslash, dollar, single quote, double quote, non printable ascii (control chars), or chars outside of the ascii range are converted to double quoted strings with escapes for special characters.* All other (simple ascii) strings are single quoted* All string conversion is done such that if the produced text is read again by puppet, the result is the same string as the original converted string. Release Notes Summary: Conversion to String using the `new` function and the programmatic `%p` option used Ruby escape conventions instead of Puppet. This is now corrected. Simple strings containing ascii range non control chars will be single quoted, and all other strings double quoted with special characters escaped and non ascii range characters using `\u` (unicode) notation. Jira (PUP-5947) Define how Resource Types are expressed in PCore
Title: Message Title Henrik Lindberg commented on PUP-5947 Re: Define how Resource Types are expressed in PCore An exploratory TypeSet was written as part of the work on PUP-6456. The design is based on the internal Puppet::Type DSL which is used to define resource types. This made it much simpler to interface with the existing 3.x implementation as changes to Puppet::Resource and how the compiler/catalog interacts with resources was a much to big task to tackle. Instead, the "resource type" part of the implementation was modified to allow using either a Puppet::Type, or a Puppet::Pops::Resource::ResourceTypeImpl, the later being loaded from Pcore defined resource types. The actual pcore type set may not need to be present in the puppet code base and should perhaps instead be in the specifications repository. Jira (PUP-5951) Write a tool that transforms a Provider into a Pcore representation
Title: Message Title Henrik Lindberg updated an issue Puppet / PUP-5951 Write a tool that transforms a Provider into a Pcore representation Change By: Henrik Lindberg We may need to have an understanding of the available providers for a given resource type in order to correctly compile (and validate) a resource instance against a resource type defined in Pcore. Jira (PUP-6480) Error Message Is Unclear When Forgetting To Capitalize a reference to a resource type
Title: Message Title Nick Walker created an issue Puppet / PUP-6480 Error Message Is Unclear When Forgetting To Capitalize a reference to a resource type Issue Type: Improvement Assignee: Unassigned Created: 2016/07/08 9:06 AM Labels: tcse Priority: Normal Reporter: Nick Walker The Problem Try the following code and see the non-specific error it provides. ``` [root@puppet-master-201620 ~]# cat /tmp/test.pp @group { 'dba': ensure => 'present', gid => 102, #noop => true, } realize(group['dba']) [root@puppet-master-201620 ~]# puppet apply /tmp/test.pp Error: Evaluation Error: The value 'dba' cannot be converted to Numeric. at /tmp/test.pp:8:15 on node puppet-master-201620 ``` The correct code will capitalize group inside of the realize function. ``` realize(Group['dba']) ``` Suggested Improvement The error message should provide more context as to what the problem is. The error message is saying it's trying to access the 'dba'th character in the string group and dba isn't numeric but that is not very clear to the average user. In fact I didn't realize it was treating group as a string and trying to access a character in it when reading the message and Henrik Lindberg had to explain it to me.

Jira (PUP-6376) Add `server_urls` option to puppet with agent failover logic
Title: Message Title William Hopper updated an issue Puppet / PUP-6376 Add `server_urls` option to puppet with agent failover logic Change By: William Hopper Release Notes Summary: This change adds master failover functionality to the puppet agent. Using the new {{server_list}} option to specify multiple masters, an agent will now attempt to fall back to a functional master should a failure to download a catalog occur. The {{server_list}} setting can be either provided on the command line or configured in {{puppet.conf}}, and has the format {{server_list = master1_hostname:port,master2_hostname:port,master3_hostname:port}}.The old {{server}} option can still be used to specify a single master, in which case failover will not be attempted and puppet will behave as it always has. Specifying a single server with the {{server_list}} option has the same effect. Jira (HI-341) Hiera should support native HOCON to match Puppet Server
Title: Message Title Chris Price commented on HI-341 Re: Hiera should support native HOCON to match Puppet Server Kylo Ginsberg thanks. J.D. Welch / Lori Landesman : do you have any input on this? Here's a tl;dr to save you reading through all of the comments: We are adding support for HOCON as an optional config file format for hiera and "puppet lookup" data files; this will be an opt-in thing that lives alongside our current support for YAML and JSON for these files. We have been using .conf as a file extension for HOCON files in all of the current places where we use HOCON in Puppet and PE, but there seems to be a consensus here that that would be a confusing suffix to use for the hiera data files, because they are not "config" files - they are data files - and the .conf extension feels like it implies that they are config files. So, we intend to use a .hocon extension for those data files. Unless either of you have any objections to the above, we'll proceed with that plan. Separately, we may want to have a discussion in the future about whether our existing HOCON config files in Puppet/PE should also be renamed from .conf to .hocon, but since that would be a costly and disruptive change, we do not intend to pursue it for now. Jira (HI-525) test coverage for hiera/lookup hocon support
Title: Message Title Chris Price commented on HI-525 Re: test coverage for hiera/lookup hocon support As this project was picked up opportunistically to take advantage of us having an intern available to work on it this summer, my hope is for this to not end up being disruptive to QA to whatever extent is possible. My personal opinion is that if we simply achieve the same level of coverage as what we currently have for yaml/JSON, that should be sufficient, and if others agree with that, we can probably just have the developers handle all of the work. If QA believes we need to increase the coverage beyond that, then we can discuss options in terms of ownership. Jira (HI-341) Hiera should support native HOCON to match Puppet Server
Title: Message Title J.D. Welch commented on HI-341 Re: Hiera should support native HOCON to match Puppet Server So, we intend to use a .hocon extension for those data files. That sounds reasonable. Except. I can't find anything other than a ticket at the typesafe/config project that mentions the extension as a thing that exists in the world. So I'll step back to be an ass and suggest: Why do we need to do this anyway? If Hiera is intended to read machine-optimized data files, what's wrong with JSON? I get the consistency argument for configuration file format. If we're talking about a totally separate problem, is HOCON actually suited to solving it? Separately, we may want to have a discussion in the future about whether our existing HOCON config files in Puppet/PE should also be renamed from .conf to .hocon, but since that would be a costly and disruptive change, we do not intend to pursue it for now. Please don't do that. The conf.d/foo.conf pattern is clear and reasonable.
