When setting up some scenario runs with Gatling, we ran into a one-time condition after the initial Puppet / Puppet Server startup where concurrent catalog / node requests can fail. Here is the sequence of steps:
1) Install Puppet Server 2.5.0 (bringing in Puppet Agent 1.6.1).
2) In the /etc/puppetlabs/puppetserver/conf.d/puppetserver.conf file, ensure that the jruby-puppet.max-active-instances is set to something greater than 1, e.g., 4, and that use-legacy-auth-conf is set to true.
3) Replace the contents of the /etc/puppetlabs/puppetserver/conf.d/auth.conf file with the following:

The language specification for Puppet 4.6 defines that bare word strings must begin with an lowercase character, bute but the following command works:{{puppet apply -e 'notice(_a)'}}works and results in "_a" to be printed.To be more precise, bare words beginning with an underscore do not result in a parsing error, and are fully evaluated.

Change By: Rob Reynolds Release Notes Summary: Previously, when Puppet is managing accounts that are disabled on Windows, it would attempt to change the password every time as it didn't recognize that the logon failure was due to the account being disabled. This causes both reporting and event log messages surrounding these changes. Now Puppet recognizes the account is disabled and no longer makes attempts to change the password while the account is not enabled. Just for the record, I can report this again and it's not like a one-time bug, it's just the way the code is written: if you have more than a few hundred nodes, you're going to hit this too.
I am in the process of migrating the Wikimedia Foundation puppet from storeconfigs to puppetDB, which is part of our effort to progressively move to puppet 4.0. I stumbled upon this same problem and had to allow the process to use almost 50 GB of memory, so I went to look at the code and fixed the issue:
