I noticed that this doesn't remove the cached fact from the cache dir. I suppose it's OK if the cache file isn't consulted, but it's confusing to have a file in the cachedir that isn't actually valid. Suggested Solution Any cached fact groups that don't currently have a TTL set in facter.conf should be removed from the cachedir. However, we'd want to make sure that running with --no-cache ( not sure if that's the exact setting ) doesn't clear it out. Add Comment

Especially in 3 months from now when we get to a puppet-agent release and realize that we're pinned to an old puppetserver version. If a module states that it has no dependencies - like in this case, that is taken as the truth and it is not allowed to load things that it does not depend on. Modules should declare their dependencies. Especially if they are public modules on the forge. Enforcement of the guardrails that we have keeps everyone honest and it increases quality. As a side effect it is faster to search only where something is supposed to be than all over the place when calling a non namespaced function. If anything I would like to make the rule more strict by enforcing that if there is no metadata.json, or if dependencies are empty then the module has no external dependencies what so ever and cannot use any resources outside of its own namespace. The quality of metadata is however sadly very poor, and many times out of date. My guess it is another problem causing this. The order of evaluation is perhaps not the same and I suspect that the getparam function digs out a parameter from a particular resource. If the parameter is a class param, then it should be looked up as a variable using its fully qualified name. If it is not a class parameter, then the code is just a bad idea of relying on some value from far away that in turn depends on the order of evaluation. What is the "getparam" function? My understanding of the reasoning is that searching through only the dependent modules makes things faster rather than searching the full set of modules looking for functions. I think there are some common cases where this could cause problems. I wouldn't be surprised if a lot of existing modules don't declare stdlib as a dependency simply because it's kind of expected that everyone has it. I think if we're going to make an argument for changing the behavior we should open a new ticket. I'm simply wanting to make an incremental improvement on the current behavior. The current behavior is particularly bad since it doesn't tell you why or how to fix it. Once that becomes clear I'm unclear on if it's as much of a problem that we require modules to declare their dependencies correctly.
