I haven't been able to repro the failure myself, so I can't guarantee the change from none to child fixes it, but I did run the change through the tests we have around the contract behavior, and it didn't seem to cause any problems.

Per a discussion in slack, it seems Net::SSH is also missing a fair number of modern crypto algorithms, making it impossible to use in some environments. Since it seems unlikely (judging by issue comments on net-ssh) that will change any time soon, the ability to use a known-good external ssh seems all the more valuable.

I can live with value(), it is somewhat related to values() to get the values out of a hash.
My opinion is: As a programmer reading and guessing what puppet code means, it is easier to guess what the imperative get does. To me value is confusing and ambiguous since everything is a value of some kind. I think I would want value_at to make it clear that it is an index/path that tells me where the value is.

I don't take any issue with the idea of following the "cp" semantics, think it is a pretty solid idea. I am a bit uneasy about associating anything with the "r*" family of unix commands though, even is the underlying implementation doesn't use them. Means we're constantly having to remind people that this is actually SSH and more like "scp" than "rcp".
What's the CLI equivalent of the suggested Puppet code?

Jira (PUP-8172) Puppet 4.10.6 exporting chained dep to puppetdb

  Re: Puppet 4.10.6 exporting chained dep to puppetdb

The reason this now fails is because the validation performed with respect to relationships. Earlier if a relationship was formed with something that did not exist puppet simply ignored the relationship and did nothing. This caused a lot of grief and debugging and we decided to add validation so that all formed relationships must be between things that exist.
Here we are getting an instance of Host from PDB, it comes with a meta parameter that makes it depend on Service['lsf] and it fails at some point (either directly when trying to instantiate it, or at the end of the compilation when it is validating all of the resources.
I don't know what the desired behaviour is in all situations - but here is my take:

if a realized X depends on a realized Y then I would expect it to retain that dependency in the catalog where they are both realized

If a realized X depends on a non existing Y, then I would expect it to ignore that dependency

In all other cases, a dependency must be to an existing resource at the end of the compilation

Faye Gibbins Do you by any chance have a stack trace (i.e. the logged error)? That helps with figuring out where exactly this particular problem is detected and how hard it would be to fix.
Ping Josh Cooper - what do you think the behaviour should be?

Add a column to factsets with this hash

When receiving a new factset, compare the hash of its paths to the one in the db. If they're the same, skip the fact_paths update code. If they're different, update fact_paths and write a new hash.

To support multiple operations source and target could be arrays - such that:

an array in source or target must have the same kind - i.e. Array[Target] or Array[String].

if target is Array[Target] (i.e. to remotes):

a (non array) single source is copied to each remote host at the specified path per target

an array source - is an error (as there is no way to specify different filenames per different targets)

if source is Array[Target] (i.e. from remotes)

The target must be a (non array) directory and each copied file is stored in a directory / with the remote (leaf) filename

An array target is an error

Example - copy 'foo.txt' to two hosts:

$targets = [

  Target('kermit.com', path => '/tmp/foo.txt'),

  Target('gonzo.com', path => '/tmp/foo.txt')

]

  Re: Download a file

How about mimicking rcp and have a remote_copy(source, target) where the side being remote must be given as a Target and the side that is a local file is a path? Proposing this because people are probably familiar with rcp, and cp and that this gets rid of the somewhat ambiguous "to"/"from" or "up"/"down".
Here is an example. Note that we encode the path to the file as an option in the Target.
To copy from the remote system to the local bolt controller:

remote_copy(Target('kermit.com', path => '/tmp/buildresult.zip'), "${resultdir}/buildresult.zip")

To copy the other way:

remote_copy("${resultdir}/buildresult.zip", Target('kermit.com', path => '/tmp/buildresult.zip'))

Can this be called "download" since it's the opposite of upload. Would it make more sense to change upload to copy_to and call this copy_from?
What is the syntax for the function? What is the syntax for the  {bolt file download}

  Re: Make the fact() function from stdlib part of core puppet so that the dot syntax is available in the DSL by default

I very much like the function solution. I think the most user friendly solution is just making facts dot-accessible without extra language decoration, so that the fact looks exactly the same whether on the CLI (facter networking.interfaces.en0.ip) and in the language ($networking.interfaces.en0.ip), but I can see that being rather difficult to implement. The function is a close second.
However, I dislike the .get() name. I very much prefer the .value() name that I proposed earlier. The reason for that is that .get() implies an imperative action, and .value() feels more declarative. We all know that the language itself is not declarative, that it instead builds a declarative catalog, but I think it's prudent to take the opportunity to encourage people to think about what things are rather than instructions to do things.

 It appears that there is a workaround for this by turning "NTFS long path support." Unfortunately the issue is on the windows side so short of pulling in resources to turn on this setting by default there doesn't seem to be much we can do other than try to limit path lengths in our modules.
