We've moved puppet 6 to use the strict version of semantic_puppet, and unvendored it, so closing this. /cc Jorie Tappa

Following up on the comments. The presence of the puppet account determines whether puppet will set the owner/group to that user, as opposed to "am I a server or not". It sounds like things are working as expected now, so I'm going to close. this.

'puppet docs' is deprecated and 'puppet describe is being deprecated.  Puppet strings should cover any missing features and facilitate an improved, easier to understand, and more modular puppet documentation build flow. Missing features include:Support for provider details.Support for core Puppet configuration (options and settings).

The facts module implements several improvements over facter_task, and we feel is a better name long-term for this module. It's also in-use by Bolt Plans. With the move to use Bolt with PE more, we want the facts module to be available when running Plans with PE as well (requiring it be a module you can install). Deprecate facter_task. Move the facts implementation out of Bolt to an external module with the same name. Add beaker testing for the task, similar to facter_task.

A plan that doesn't explicitly return a result once more prints null. BOLT-372 started always returning a PlanResult, even if run_plan returns nil; the value in PlanResult would then be nil. Unfortunately that bypasses the check in the human outputter for a nil value. Update the outputters print_plan_result implementations to assume a PlanResult object, and print that message when it's value is nil.

Tasks which are installed into the gem at build time by r10k (package, service, puppet_conf, apply) are missing from the bolt 0.20.2 gem. It seems the tarball we build of the repo doesn't run r10k first to pull those things in.

There are some helpers for mocking out run_* actions and testing plans in BoltSpec::Plans. We should make it easier to use these helpers outside bolt probably by moving them to their own gem or rspec puppet

Something went wrong with packaging and the 0.20.0 release of the bolt gem does not include the vendored puppet. Bolt plan and task actions would therefore fail.

Jira (PUP-7551) deprecate 'puppet describe'

  Re: deprecate 'puppet describe'

I added the block because if "puppet describe" is removed then there is nothing generating documentation for providers. Note that the documentation pipeline on our site does not make use of "puppet describe" (see PDOC-169). PDOC-169 was closed, but I think it should be reopened and that Strings should have the features to feed the documentation pipeline the information it needs to generate the documentation for providers. Without that, we may deprecate and drop "puppet describe" but we still have the logic that is required for the docs pipeline to carry in the puppet runtime. Both should be removed IMO.

We've made many improvements around AIO testing, so it's the same for all puppet-agent components (nearly). But we still need to update the docs and more work to support (again) git based test workflows.

We have future plans of making improvements to pluginsync so that we don't copy everything everywhere. For this specific issue, you might want to create a different pluginsync directory for each node under management (and perhaps preload the cache the first time?). But if you do override the pluginsync destination dir, then you'll run into.

(Initial planned release date: 2018-06-18) Ensure all tickets referenced in the commit log have a bug targeted at the release, and ensure all tickets targeted at the release have a corresponding commit. You can do this manually by inspecting the git log and comparing against 'Project=Bolt and fixVersion="Bolt x.y.z"' in JIRA.

Using this broader ticket to cover all the branches, we'll close it once the 4.2.3.x and 5.1.x tickets are finished, and then we've merged everything up to 5.2.x and master.

Josh Cooper Can we stop doing this in Puppet 6.0.0? It means that functions and type & providers that mutate frozen string arguments will hit a hard error when using puppet apply. It will also make 3.x functions that do this error when compiling (If attempting to mutate arguments in a 4.x function it will already error if argument is frozen).

Move String functions upcase, downcase, capitalize, camelcase, lstrip, rstrip, strip, chop, chomp from stdlib to puppet and update them to the 4.x function API. The new implementations must be backwards compatible but may add new features. If possible implement these by using StringConverter functionality The length() function was added in PUP-8497 to override the function with the same name in stdlib . The size() function was however not moved and should be moved in this ticket since the 3.x stdlib implementation is broken for strings that can be converted to Float (it errors).

When run on an OpenStack compute node with more than 1100 interfaces, the command "facter networking" is very slow. For example, it takes 140 seconds with about 1170 interfaces. Running with the -d option shows that a subprocess is run for each interface, running /sbin/ip link show .This makes puppet runs very slow.We are running on CentOS 7, with puppet-agent-5.3.3-1.el7.x86_64, facter 3.9.3

Jira (PUP-8745) The match function does not accept a type alias

A possible work around for this is to make a copy of the match function and modify it to be in a module namespace of your own (mymodule::match()). Then deprecate that function and change to use the puppet match() when you have 5.5.2. The other way to work around this is to call a function in the type declaration and have that return the regular _expression_ that in Nick's use case is the regexp that is "shared". That will stop working as it relies on a bug that allows this construct - it will be blocked in Puppet 6.0.0 - hence this is not the best work around.
