Hi Eric Thompson, Can you review on the suggested fix and pass it to the Engineering team if it fits puppet's requirements ? That should definitively remove the need of any Notify to a Exec['systemctl-daemon-reload'] for all systemd services.

Re: Agents should re-download CRLs when they are newer than the local copy

This had to be reverted due to an issue where during failover, the CA cannot be contacted (though the compile master can), but the reverse-proxy service in pe-puppetserver forward the CRL redownload request anyway, causing the agent run to error. This error brought to light the fact that we have built up quite a few assumptions around not needing to contact the CA post-SSL bootstrapping. This feature will need further evaluation.

Pluginsync saves files on the agent in the path /opt/puppetlabs/puppet/cache/*. Notably, custom defined functions are saved in the lib/puppet/functions/ inside the the cache directory. With the Deferred type in this [PR|]https://github.com/puppetlabs/puppet/pull/6951] merged, a catalog could defer a function to run during client application of the catalog, but the lack of loading in functions saved via pluginsync would result in an error with Puppet unable to find the definition for custom defined functions loaded via modules.

I don't think we want to expose this functionality via the bolt-service config so i would consider it just a bug.

Is this currently a bug, or just something to be aware of when adding configuration? If it's the latter we can add it as a requirement to BOLT-653

There are currently no package tests for pe-bolt-server. These should live in bolt, and verify that:

The `pe-bolt-server` package can be installed
That the service can be started
We'll also need to add running these tests to the CI pipeline for pe-bolt-server. There's a comment in the `ruby-vanagon` job-group where this should go.

  Re: Handle missing postgresql-contrib gracefully

I was able to reproduce the error via the following steps.

Install postgres from source (following short version instructions to ensure contrib packages were not installed
Start up PuppetDB from source (let all the migrations run)

You should see the above warning about pg_trgm

Stop PuppetDB
Back in the postgres source navigate into the pg_trgm dir and run

make install

Currently, to find which version of the runtime package we want for running git-based acceptance, it's a bit rough. I hard coded to the master branch for the ease of boot strapping, and we simply grab the latest tag from the default branch of the puppet-runtime repo.   There are a handful of issues with this approach. Primarily, it's very inflexible. Folks should be able to run git-based acceptance for more than just the master branch of a component. Less significant, but also a blocker, is there's the occasional race condition we have the potential to hit. There's a space of time between when a puppet-runtime tag is pushed to the repo and packages are built/tested/promoted to puppet-agent. Since we simply grab the latest tag from the default branch of puppet-runtime, there is a potential that packages may not be available quite yet. There is also the potential that we're grabbing untested/experimental/broken packages because we assume the latest tag is good.   There are a few solutions here for us. These solutions span the two different issues outlined above in different ways. Some can be combined.

Add environment variables! This is tried and true. There are a bunch we rely on already for different settings. It lets us keep the simple defaults of master branch/latest tag, but allows you to override it if you need to. However, I personally am hesitant to add yet more environment variables. There is a point where there are too many.
Add it to the beaker configuration! We already have configuration files for the different acceptance runs. I believe we have a default set in beaker-puppet, and then we can add/override any in project specific config files. We could fairly easily add in a setting here to specify the branch we are running tests from.

(Initial planned release date: 2018-08-02) Ensure all tickets referenced in the commit log have a bug targeted at the release, and ensure all tickets targeted at the release have a corresponding commit. You can do this manually by inspecting the git log and comparing against 'Project=Bolt and fixVersion="Bolt x.y.z"' in JIRA.

(Initial planned release date: 2018-08-02) Until we automate this, you'll also need to update the version and SHA hashes of https://github.com/puppetlabs/homebrew-puppet/blob/master/Casks/puppet-bolt.rb. To do this please

Create a fork of the homebrew-puppet repo
Create a new branch on that fork
Update the version to the new version in https://github.com/puppetlabs/homebrew-puppet/blob/master/Casks/puppet-bolt.rb
Download the `puppet-bolt-latest.dmg` from http://downloads.puppetlabs.com/mac/10.13/PC1/x86_64/, http://downloads.puppetlabs.com/mac/10.12/PC1/x86_64/, and http://downloads.puppetlabs.com/mac/10.11/PC1/x86_64/
Calculate the SHA256 hash of each `.dmg` package by running `shasum -a 256 `
Update the sha hashes in the file linked above
Put up a PR to homebrew-puppet and request review

This is fixed in Puppet 6 by the above ticket, PUP-8652.

In types that use the default {{ensurable}} logic, the "ensure" property works in implied ways when it is not present. This default behavior is described in our [documentation's Type Reference page preamble |https://puppet.com/docs/puppet/latest/type.html] , but users also view individual type reference pages, and the modularization of types and providers means its documentation might be visible in multiple places that do not include the preamble .However, this isn't always clear in the individual types' description of the {{ensure}} attribute. For example, If a user specifies this below entry in their manifest/site.pp, puppet will not CREATE a file. But if the file exists, puppet will MODIFY the file.{code:puppet}file { 'test entry friendly name' :  path => '/tmp/testfile',  content => 'a whole bunch of testy content.'}{code}But the [file type documentation|https://puppet.com/docs/puppet/5.3/types/file.html#file-attribute-ensure] does not describe the behavior of omitting the attribute. This is further complicated by types that do not use the default {{ensurable}} logic, such as the {{group}} type prior to Puppet 5.4.0 (see PUP-7968).

In types that use the default ensurable logic, the "ensure" property works in implied ways when it is not present. This default behavior is described in our documentation's Type Reference page. But the file type documentation does not describe the behavior of omitting the attribute. This is further complicated by types that do not use

Puppet cert clean updates /etc/puppetlabs/puppet/ssl/ca/ca_crl.pem even when the puppet master is set as an intermediate to an external CA, this means that on next update from the external ca of the crl all entries from puppet as the intermediates are lost in the ca_crl.pem.

Jira (PUP-9023) unable to find

  Re: unable to find

I can only speak for myself, but I disabled i18n for four reasons:

I don't need it.
I don't want it, as searching for an error message is much more likely to yield results if the error message is in English than in Swedish.  (This is how I found this issue and PUP-9010.)  Also, I'm the only one in my team that is a native Swedish speaker.  The others speak German, Polish, Spanish and (I think) Mandarin. The only language all of us can understand is English.
Translations are often crappy. I don't know how good the Puppet translations are, but given how crappy many other translations are I'd rather stick with the original English.
I read about it causing performance issues, so I disabled it while upgrading just to be on the safe side.
