Re: File mode X should work with the = operator

So, adding "u=rX" support would directly contradict how chmod works from what I'm reading in the manpage where "X" only works with "+" (as is mentioned in the error message in the ticket description).

X The execute/search bits if the file is a directory or any of the execute/search bits are set in the original

(unmodified) mode. Operations with the perm symbol ``X'' are only meaningful in con-

junction with the op symbol ``+'', and are ignored in all other cases.

So, if we're trying to match chmod's behavior exactly, then this looks like something we couldn't do.

There is also PUP-9163 which is similar and it affected 4.10. That fix went it, but it was not the end of problems like that as PUP-9303 showed. For PUP-9303 the problem was really understood as an architectural problem and corrected accordingly.

Paladox If the server fails compilation, then in 4.8.1 the agent will produce a last_run_summary.yaml such as:

In 6.1.x, puppet's last_run_report.yaml also says the overall run failed, and that the transaction did not complete:

chmod u=X will also add the execute bit to a file if it's not already set. I assume that's desirable to match the chmod behavior exactly, in which case puppet's current behavior (made readable directories executable) is not sufficient. /cc Jacob Helwig

Re: How can I update puppet from 3.8.7 to 6.1.0 on CentOS 6.5 (64-bit)?

Hi George Lin, we have lots of resources for upgrading from 3.8.7 to more recent versions. I suggest checking out our documentation in https://docs.puppet.com/upgrade/, joining the #upgraders channel in https://puppetcommunity.slack.com. Also checkout the https://github.com/puppetlabs/puppetlabs-catalog_preview module to see how puppet 4 language changes will affect your manifests, and the https://forge.puppet.com/puppetlabs/puppet_agent module to automate the process of upgrading your agents. I'm going to close this ticket as you'll get better answers on slack.

…method" This reverts commit a2b284422e27198899fb54a13f5f5612bcf52ebd. In some of our periodic builds the more generic call hits a path which doesn't allow us to pass :puppet_collection through the opts hash. This causes beaker to default to older repo urls which breaks acceptance tests on certain platforms.

When trying to examine the exit status of a local command, i noticed that the exit status being reported by bolt was not consistent with the exit status being returned from the command/script.   The simplest way to reproduce is with the following command:

$ bolt command run "exit 1" --nodes local://localhost

 Started on localhost...

 Failed on localhost:

The command failed with exit code 256

 Failed on 1 node: local://localhost

Ran on 1 node in 0.00 seconds

From a testing perspective there are generally 2 kinds of tests run.

Puppet apply, check for where there errors.  status IE puppet returns a non zero status code if there was an error.
Run puppet apply with detailed exit codes. puppet returns a non zero status code if there was a change made.
There may be some tests that check for specific changes, eg expect(apply_manifest(pp, expect_failures: true).first['result']['stderr']).to match(%r{change from '?directory'? to '?file'? failed}) I think that the enhanced functionality is worth the change. I think that it will affect testing in modules!  but it should be a small number of tests affected. We could grep through supported modules to find the size of this change.

I created a PR with the deprecation. If a decision is made (ping Eric Sorenson, Eric Sorenson - which on is the real Eric S at Puppet?) to go ahead with this deprecation the PR needs to be updated with a URL that points to a deprecation documentation page.
