Using the example above with a plan module::patch_and_reboot, I'd expect to be able to call it from another plan as follows: pan module:patch_lots_of_servers is run on 10 nodes, which does the following: Perform some global pre-patching steps like taking vm snapshots, and emailing users that patching is starting run_plan module::patch_and_reboot on all 10 nodes i'd like puppet to run 10 parallel processes here, each executing the plan on an individual node each node will work through the steps in that plan independently, but execution of this 'top-level' plan won't continue until all 10 parallel processes have been completed Perform some global post-patching steps like removing vm snapshots, and emailing users that patching has finished I did try searching for an existing issue here and didn't come across BOLT-176, but I believe that it is a very similar request, it's just that this one relates to execution of a plan, not a task (which already happens in parallel across nodes based on the concurrency parameter). To do this, lookup should obtain the key :lookup_key_recorder from the context and if this key is bound, it must be to an object that responds to the message record(key). Thus, the contract for someone that wants to process these callbacks is to give the puppet compiler a context where :lookup_key_recorder is bound and then do what is wanted in that specific bound recorder. There may be opportunity to coalesce this feature with another ticket where it is requested that puppet should be able to give profiling per backend/key. If that is wanted, the API must include both a "begin" and an "end" call for every key. It is expected that a first implementation does not take that into account. There will be no call to the record(key method for the meta key lookup_options. From an impact analysis standpoint; as if there is any lookup of any key, there will also be a lookup of the lookup_options - so an analyzer should handle that key implicitly. (It may also want to do special processing of the content of lookup_options since it is possible to compute that a change of lookup_options for a key that is never looked up has no impact).

For example, in AWS this would allow for a puppet.conf that contains a certname_fact = ec2_metadata.instance-id, bypassing any need to execut execute a puppet config set command at instance boot.This, combined with PUP-6239 would enable for the reuse of a standard puppet.conf file for agents across an environment that is dynamically scaling and not conforming to standard hostname based classification (aka cloud environments). This appears to be the behavior for getlogin() which is how bolt determines the default user for ssh. We could possible switch to $USER when available to more closely mimic the behavior of ssh.
