 Task plugin hooks are inventory_targets and inventory_config (and secret_decrypt secret_encrypt). We should warn and fail if target_lookups is present and tell users that they should just use targets

 Users should be able to write their own plugins for the inventory. Plugins can be used for either configuration data or inventory data. User plugins should be written as tasks. The tasks can then be used to lookup target and config data in the inventory like so:

 targets:

   _plugin: task

   task: mymodule::db

   params:

 host: foo

 password: bar

 myparam: param

 I think we generally don't want people to treat $environment specially in plans. So most of the behavior you described(except perhaps always being set) makes sense. I don't think plans should inherit environment just like they don't inherit other scope(anymore).

 So, you never expect to be able to change the environment between two applies in the same plan? (At least not with that interface) And isn't there a global {{$environment }} that it would pick up if not setting it? Is that the intent - hide global with local? What if one plan calls another? That setting of $environment is local to the calling plan, and will not be visible to the called plan unless it "fiddles around with calling scope"...

 I don't think thats the case. We'd just have to check for a $environment variable when we're deserializing the plan scope for catalog compilation and name the environment after it when creating the temporary environment. It seems like expected behavior for plans where puppet environments are not really a thing.

 This can't be accomplished with a simple "touch-node" call, as a factset or report or otherwise can still cause a node to be expired because our use of

Change By:
 Robert Roland

 Support a way for users to explicitly refresh the timestamp used for node TTL. This can be accomplished currently by repeatedly sending *configure expiration* commands for a node with *expire.facts = true* (see linked ticket for more detail)We should make this more explicit (maybe adding a new command) and look into the possibility of allowing bulk updates given a list of certnames.

 Even before inventory was dynamic users wanted to be able to display which nodes were in a group in an inventory https://github.com/puppetlabs/bolt/issues/537. Now that inventory can be dynamic this seems even more useful.We should find what use cases current users have around displaying inventory. A workaround for now is to use a plan that returns the targets{noformat}plan resolve_targets( TargetSpec $nodes) {  return(get_targets($nodes))}{noformat}

 Currently, without_default_logging makes a flatly disables all event processing for the human outputter. This winds up also skipping the message event that is used by out::message. Given a core use case of out::message is to disable default output and substitute your own, this is a significant issue.

 Some bolt tasks operate on "cloud resources". For example, this article describes how to use bolt to spin up a Kubernetes cluster on EKS:[https://puppet.com/blog/deploying-kubernetes-amazon-eks-bolt]The ability to run bolt within a container would open the door for more usage of ` {{ bolt ` }} in the context of "cloud native" The container should treat {{/Boltdir}} as the project directory (which should happen by default).The user is expected to create their own image 'based on' this image that bakes their code in to that directory, or mounts it as a volume. We should document both of these workflows (though they're both common - shouldn't need too much detail).The image should just have bolt and bundled content. The Bolt container is currently built on Ubuntu 16.04 image.Document passing inventory as an environment variable to the container.

 Users should be able to set `$environment` for apply blocks so they can use existing hierarchies that reference environment. Interface 1: apply($nodes, environment => 'foo') interface 2: noformat $environment = 'foo' apply($nodes) noformat
