I removed the validate_ustar_path check from the PDK, then used the code from the unit test to make the deeply nested empty file in a module. I used my modified PDK to build the module package and then puppet module install to install it. Everything worked as expected. Yep exactly. The "Classes and defined resource types" section is good as is. It's just that when puppet attempts to load a file for an entity (class, function, etc), it transforms the entity's name to lowercase (as described here) and searches for a matching file. So in other words, puppet requires the full path to be lowercase even if the class, etc name is mixed/camel case. So it never notifies the exec. And the tidy type uses "generate" to dynamically add files to the catalog, however, that method does not add containment edges between the file resources and the downstream exec. Switching to "eval_generate" would solve that problem.
