  External/Extended trusted data

Change By:

To facilitate enhancing catalog compilation with dynamic external trusted data from third parties (i.e. not the ENC or the agent), this change adds {{$trusted_ext}}. The data gets loaded from the indirector (currently only through calling a script that needs to return JSON).This is an experimental feature.

Massive HUGE shout out to Melissa Stone we have a solution and no code needs to change. It will allow us to deprecate the helper functions used in the content world. With this work around we were able to test against puppet 6 and puppet 5 agent for the following OSes The results for testing against MOTD are here https://travis-ci.org/puppetlabs/puppetlabs-motd/builds/512059979?utm_source=github_status_medium=notification

Josh Cooper the beaker-i18n_helper library was used by the modules team to install language packs on a target OS, it only worked on debian and ubuntu.  https://github.com/puppetlabs/beaker-i18n_helper/blob/master/lib/beaker/i18n_helper.rb#L48-L52 It also changed the locale on the target Os https://github.com/puppetlabs/beaker-i18n_helper/blob/master/lib/beaker/i18n_helper.rb#L70-L73 It was very limited in its capabilities. This was the only way we could test the japanese language output.

Jira (PUP-9324) Puppet agent run output to differentiate between corrective and intentional change

Re: Puppet agent run output to differentiate between corrective and intentional change

From a testing perspective there are generally 2 kinds of tests run.

Puppet apply, check for where there errors.  status IE puppet returns a non zero status code if there was an error.
Run puppet apply with detailed exit codes. puppet returns a non zero status code if there was a change made.
There may be some tests that check for specific changes, eg expect(apply_manifest(pp, expect_failures: true).first['result']['stderr']).to match(%r{change from '?directory'? to '?file'? failed}) I think that the enhanced functionality is worth the change. I think that it will affect testing in modules!  but it should be a small number of tests affected. We could grep through supported modules to find the size of this change.

At the very least if the target information hash is passed to the task/plan. Then the task author can deal with the connection creation there.

Hi Bas Toonk i am just following up with this, due to some of the functionality in device locking the process does not make sense. However i could see this being added as a possible new feature. IE opting into process locking. This would not be a priority, currently.  Thanks for taking the time to document this.

I think that we are seeing an edge case of the problem. The paths are long because on the number of nested structures, this is how the vendors have chosen to model the problem. It is acceptable that the import path is long. in my opinion, we only reflect the underlying yang model.

I agree this is not easy to fix, we can fudge the tests to pass. But the difference in functionality / output is the real problem. If both functions perform identically it becomes less of an issue.

With puppet 4.5.X we have introduced dig as a function. This is not documented @ https://docs.puppet.com/puppet/latest/reference/function.html
When running puppetlabs-stdlib dig with puppet 4, it uses puppets dig function not stdlib. This is causing weird behaviour, also breaking the acceptance tests for the module.
To replicate:

checkout the puppetlabs stdlib module.

export PUPPET_GEM_VERSION="= 4.5.0"

bundle install --path .bundle/gems/

Based on https://tickets.puppetlabs.com/browse/FM-2503
When pre-fetching a resource, puppet does not check to see if that node can actually apply that resource. It is only when it tries to apply the resource that it checks to see if the module is compatible with that client.
Logs are at the end of the aforementioned ticket.
