I think the next step in this concept will be designing a way to add more external sources. So far we've built a script for creating an inventory from PuppetDB, and this ticket has turned into supporting running simple actions (not plans) with a PuppetDB query. In general the inventory approach is more flexible and makes sense for multiple sources. The other idea we've floated for using external queries in a way that can be used with plans is to have a special syntax highlighting a query extension that we then transform into a list of targets, much like we use protocols for transports.
