Title: Message Title Nathan Kroenert commented on PUP-3965 Re: Puppet Agent Install on Windows Fails with UAC Set to Never Notify FYI for anyone who might happen to work on this issue, it's worth noting that I did a basic, DVD based windows install on 8.1 enterprise and experienced the same issue. The installer complained that it could install / start the service because I didn't have sufficient privileges. A reboot and retry saw it work without issue. So this might actually be something a little more like a pure windows behavior issue / installer requirement. Cheers. That configuration does set the registry key mentioned in the first comment: PS Get-ItemProperty -path HKLM:\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\policies\system\ -name EnableLUA EnableLUA : 0 I get exactly the same error message trying to install Puppet 3.7.4: Service 'Puppet Agent' (puppet) could not be installed. Verify that you have sufficient privileges to install system services.. There is no issue writing files to Program File and ProgramData before that step. I have tried this manually from an elevated cmd shell and get the same issue. Re-enabling UAC and rebooting does fix the installation issue, but this isn't ideal from an automated installation point of view. I'll see about trying to work out what it's really failing on in a bit. It looks like this will be put back in for the release of Vagrant 1.7.3, according to the changelog: https://github.com/mitchellh/vagrant/blob/master/CHANGELOG.md https://github.com/mitchellh/vagrant/issues/5166 https://github.com/mitchellh/vagrant/pull/5261 There's no need to mess with UAC, the missing reboot alone seems to resolve the issue. UAC is technically not turned off on Windows 8+ without the registry hack and you still get subjected to some issues. We do recommend in our install instructions that you perform the actions as an administrator. However we may be missing some documentation surrounding ensuring you are on an administrative console shell when installing from the command line in Windows. When that didn't work, I ran it both from an elevated command line and via Win+R with no success. Actually, installing Puppet via Vagrant (WinRM) doesn't seem to work reliably, even with the registry hack. It sometimes works, but I can't find any pattern. What is the reason for Puppet requirin an administrativew console shell to install from the command line?
