The file face was removed in Puppet 5 as it had many problems. Using a content parameter as a checksum is something we want to deprecate and remove PUP-1043. Also, if the server filebucket is using md5 but the agent requests a file based on its sha256 checksum, then there's nothing we can do. Closing as won't fix. Bad Request definitely isn't helpful, and setting the checksum type in puppet.conf (I think they have to match on agent and file bucket host) should work. Can pull it back out of the sprint. I suspect there are ways to decompose it, but haven't thought about it much yet. It seems potentially tricky, because the filebucket could end up with multiple checksum references to the same file, and there's no clean way to do that. This would allow multiple filebuckets to be configured for use for files that used different hashes but wouldn't actually solve this issue. Another possibility would be to extend filebuckets to support multiple checksum types in a single filebucket. This runs into certain other problems, such as what happens if a file is uploaded twice using different checksums or what hash should the local filesystem layout use. That being said, I think working through them and doing this is probably the best option.
