Title: Message Title Sean Griffin commented on PUP-4797 Re: The command "puppet help" should not list "preview" as an available subcommand. John D and I were discussing how when you invoke puppet preview --environmentpath some_bogus_directory ... the error message indicates subcommand preview is not found. (was filed as pre-58) I tried that construction for all the listed subcommands from puppet help, and discovered the preview was the only subcommand that gave that error message. John observed that preview is the only module-implemented subcommand that has an entry in the list of subcommands from puppet help. I just checked and preview does not show up on the list when it is not installed. When strings is installed, there is a sub-command listed for it in puppet help. The behavior behavior of preview (appearance of subcommand, reporting non-existent subcommand when environmentpath is wrong) is the same as strings. I no longer think that preview should be removed from the list in puppet help. I will close this bug. I still think when puppet's error message reports that preview (or strings) is not a subcommand when the environmentpath parameter is wrong is misleading to the user. I will file this as a separate bug (not a fault of preview or strings). Title: Message Title Henrik Lindberg commented on PUP-4797 Re: The command "puppet help" should not list "preview" as an available subcommand. A couple of questions: Where did this requirement come from? Is puppet help producing information about preview even if it is not installed? It seems more reasonable to offer help if the command 'preview' is installed but only then Thus, isn't the problem that strings does not show up? (Was it installed?) Title: Message Title Sean Griffin created an issue Puppet / PUP-4797 The command "puppet help" should not list "preview" as an available subcommand. Issue Type: Bug Assignee: Unassigned Created: 2015/06/29 4:20 PM Priority: Normal Reporter: Sean Griffin The sub-command "preview" is implemented as a module which may or may not be actually installed, and therefore should not be listed in the available sub commands from "puppet help". Preview is the only subcommand in the list which is implemented as a module. Other module-implemented sub commands (e.g., "strings") are not listed as subcommands from "puppet help".
