Trusted facts are extracted from the node’s certificate, which can prove that the CA checked and approved them. This makes them useful for deciding whether a given node should receive sensitive data in its catalog. not sure what exactly to do with the ticket now; re-closing just to make the book-keeping tidy. Nearly everyone uses FQDN-style certificate subjects and there's widespread understanding that the trusted facts come from the certificate, so it feels pretty natural to conclude trusted.hostname would be derived from the cert subject. Might be worth adding a trusted.subjectname or something just for completeness sake but the current thing as Fihue Romain implemented seems fine to me. All are taken from the client’s SSL certificate (so be careful if you’ve got hostname/certname mismatches). This is useful in creating modules where files for each client are kept completely separately, e.g. for private ssh host keys. And users seems to be okay with it ... I'm fine with renaming the labels but it should not change the content. Like you said, if we can't piece them together the Hiera use case no longer exists. By doing it the way it is now merged can be misconstrued as actual trusted information about a hostname and domain, when it in fact is just parts of the name of a certificate which could have been constructed with a name that does not contain those actual pieces of information. Because of this, we may want to rethink the design. At least relabel the values to something that makes it obvious that they are an interpretation based on what is in the certname. A user would have to know how they are naming certs. Ideally the concept would be open ended, just giving access to the parts of the certname - but then it becomes difficult to piece them together - domain can be more than one part. (There is no way to say - the rest of an array with dots between) in the hiera 'dot notation'). It would be nice if hostname and domain name could be extracted from certname in trusted facts. Our use case is to use them in Hiera's hierarchy.
