Re: [PyMOL] Movie to Powerpoint

2006-07-07 Thread Charlie Bond
In my experience, animated gifs run beautifully in web browsers on all
platforms and in openoffice under linux.

They are usually awful in powerpoint on any platform.
(And to be honest I don't really notice the lack of color depth.)

Alternatively, MPEGs tend to run well in powerpoint, but are troublesome
under linux.

One can convert between MPEGs and gifanims using a complicated
combination of imagemagic and mencoder/MPEG.

Cheers,
Charlie

Hi there,

first of all, let me say hello to all list subscribers, as I'm new here.
I've been evaluating PyMOL for a couple of months now, coming from Molmol.

Chiradip, one option next to creating an MPEG file is to make an
animated GIF. Unfortunately, I don't know a free program under Windows
to do this job, but you might want to look for it on the web, there must
be some. I created a GIF from a set of PyMOL pictures using
GraphicConverter on a Mac, a program that came free with OS X (as of
10.3 or 10.4, at least). The file "runs" fine in Powerpoint under
Windows, and one doesn't have problems with missing codecs when
presenting the slides on an old computer. Just make sure the file is not
too large, it may not run as smooth as an .avi on an old box (which
implies that this may not be the most elegant solution to the problem,
consider it a quick workaround).

Re: [PyMOL] Movie to Powerpoint

2006-07-06 Thread Grégori Gerebtzoff
For this purpose I've been using mencoder (http://www.mplayerhq.hu) which is
open source and gives access to a wide range of codecs (mpeg-1, mpeg-2,
mpeg-4 (divx), realmedia, mov, avi, asf, flash etc). Here is the batch file
I used to encode a video in two-pass divx encoding (the frames were in the
same folder as the batch (.bat) file, and were called vid001.png,
vid002.png, ...). The output video had a very nice quality and a decent
size.

c:\mplayer\mencoder mf://*.png -mf w=960:h=720:fps=15:type=png -ovc lavc
-lavcopts vcodec=mpeg4:vpass=1 -oac copy -o output.avi
del output3.avi
c:\mplayer\mencoder mf://*.png -mf w=960:h=720:fps=15:type=png -ovc lavc
-lavcopts vcodec=mpeg4:vpass=2 -oac copy -o output.avi

However this has been done with version 1.0pre6 (relased on the December 23,
2004), and version 1.0pre8 has been released recently (June 11, 2006) so
some parameters might have been added/modified.

Hope this helps!
Cheers,

Greg

There some cool free tools out there in cyberspace, one of them is Slide
Show Movie Maker by Joern Thiemann

http://www.joern-thiemann.de/tools/SSMM/index.html
Although it is not meant as a live movie maker but for slide shows, it
just a matter of frames pr. second, right ;-)
First you need to convert your png's to jpg to SSMM to read it. You
can do this with png2jpg
http://www.geocities.com/aroach.geo/png2jpg/index.html

One great thing about SSMM is the ability to insert text boxes anywhere
in the movie and you can pause on a single image for several frames to
focus on interesting features.

Alternatively, you can buy QuickTime Pro, and convert png's directly
into movies + you get the super nice H.264 encoder.

For the sake of your audience, please consider using DivX or Cinepak
codecs instead of MPEG, they look much better!
