ANN: Image Processing with Python Kickstarter

2021-01-04 Thread Mike Driscoll
Hi! I've been busily working on a new book on image processing with Python
that uses the Pillow package. Pillow is the friendly fork of the Python
Imaging Library and is one of the most popular Python image processing
tools.

If you'd like to learn more, you can check out my Kickstarter:
https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/driscollis/image-processing-with-python

Here are some of the topics that the book will cover:

   - Accessing image metadata
   - Working with image colors
   - Opening / viewing images with Python
   - Applying filters to images
   - Cropping, rotating, and resizing photos
   - Enhancing photos with Python
   - Combining images
   - and more!

Thanks,
Mike

ANN: wxPython Cookbook

2016-08-26 Thread Mike Driscoll
Hi,

Several years ago, the readers of my popular Python blog
asked me to take some of my articles
and turn them into a cookbook on wxPython. I have finally decided to do
just that. I am including over 50 recipes that I am currently editing to
make them more consistent and updating them to be compatible with the
latest versions of wxPython. I currently have nearly 300 pages of content!

If you'd like to check out the funding campaign for the book, you can find
it here: https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/34257246/wxpython-cookbook/

Pyowa Meeting this Thursday

2009-06-03 Thread Mike Driscoll
 Hi,

Pyowa will be meeting Thursday, June 4th in Ames. We will be meeting
at the Ames
Public Library from 7 to 8:45 p.m. The current plan for the meeting is to
have a code review of sorts on some member submitted GIS-type code. Then we
will have a short presentation on one of the modules from Python's standard
library. Whatever time is left over will be used for socializing and
planning the next meeting. If you have ideas or would like to present
something, please let me know at the meeting or through email.

In other news, you can see my experiments in recording some of our meetings
here: http://pyowa.blip.tv/

Please note that if you don't have a fast internet connection, then you will
be disappointed as it will take eons to buffer. Let me know if you plan to
come to the meeting. Thanks!

Pyowa Meeting Next Monday

2009-04-30 Thread Mike Driscoll

Hi,

Our May Pyowa meeting is next Monday, May 4th. It will be held at the
Marshall County Sheriff's Office from 7-9 p.m. Direction are on the
website: www.pyowa.org.

Agenda (in no particular order):

1) Introduction to SqlAlchemy - An object oriented way of connecting to
a database with a "pythonic" API.
2) Nick Fox from Fox Media Systems in Des Moines will talk about his
experiences with Python and (maybe) his experience as a core developer
for the Mythbuntu project.
3) A short GIS Code review - We'll look at some auto-generated ArcGIS(?)
code from one of our members and try to improve it.

If you need a laptop to follow along, we have some that can be made
available as long as you let me know ahead of time. I've been told that
we will have snacks this time as well as pop and water.

Also note that the Iowa Code Camp is this Saturday. The reason I mention
this is that there's a Django talk there and there may be a
Python-related "open space" type thing too. You can check out the
schedule here: http://iowacodecamp.com/. Iowa Code Camp is in Cedar
Rapids. Go and support Python!

Anyway, I hope to see you next Monday! Let me know if you have any
questions.

Dec 1st - Python Users Group Meeting

2008-11-29 Thread Mike Driscoll

Hi,

The 3rd meeting of the Iowa Python Users Group (Pyowa) is getting
together next Monday, December 1st, 7-9 p.m. Be sure to mark your
calendars! We currently have one presentation scheduled and a workshop
where we hope to have teams work on easy to intermediate problems in an
effort to learn and improve one's Python programming skills. There will
probably be time for Lightning Talks
(http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lightning_Talk) as well if you're
interested in sharing something.

We are meeting at the following location:

Marshall County Sheriff's Office
2369 Jessup Ave
Marshalltown, IA 50158

This group is open to new and experienced programmers. Come and network
with local IT personnel. If you know you can make it, could you please
let me know? It's nice to have a general idea of how many will be there
(there is plenty of room though). We hope to see you there!

Iowa Python User's Group Meeting (November 3rd)

2008-10-27 Thread Mike Driscoll

Hi,

The next Iowa Python Users Group (AKA Pyowa) is nearly upon us. We will
be meeting November 3rd, from 7-9 p.m. at the following location:

Marshall County Sheriff's Office
2369 Jessup Ave
Marshalltown, IA 50158

At this meeting, we will be having a Crash Course of sorts for all the
new programmers in our group. As anyone who has ever taken a programming
course know, it is impossible to teach everything in two hours, so we'll
be focusing on tools that will allow our group to help themselves. In
other words, we'll be focusing on source code analysis techniques like
introspection and how to use IDLE effectively. There will also be a
presentation on basic GUI design and also Django.

We will have 8 laptops there to use for any new people, pre-loaded with
Python 2.5.2 and any additional packages we need for our presentations.
You are welcome to bring your own laptop if you want. Be sure to have
2.5 on yours as well as wxPython and the PyWin32 package (if you use
Windows). We will have them on USB flash drives should you forget.

Free pop and bottled water will be provided. Questions and comments can
be directed to mike [at] pythonlibrary [dot] org. Updates can be found
at http://www.ipug.pythonlibrary.org

Iowa Python Users Group - First Meeting

2008-09-09 Thread Mike Driscoll

Hi,

The first meeting date for the Iowa Python Users Group (USA) has been
decided. Here are the details:

Time / Date: Wednesday, Sept. 24 from 7-9 p.m.

Location:
Marshall County Sheriff's Office, 3rd floor

2369 Jessup Ave
Marshalltown, IA 50158

Unofficial website: http://www.ipug.pythonlibrary.org

Don't know how to get there? Check out maps.yahoo.com or
maps.google.com. The Sheriff's Office is not actually in Marshalltown.
If you take Highway 30 East, towards Marshalltown you'll see it on your
left. There's a large water tower there and the building is a rusty red
color. There are some signs for a Tractor convention there as well. If
you're coming from the other direction, then skip ALL the exits and keep
driving until the lanes go from 4 lanes to 2. It should be the second
right after that.

I am still developing the agenda for our first meeting, but here are
some of the things we're going to discuss:

- What day really works best for meeting? (if you can't make the first
one, you can email me your votes!)

- Figure out what domain name our group should have
- Decide on what Python web framework to use to create said site (which
will be a group project)

- Try to come up with what format we want our meetings to take.

Plone and Zope users are welcome. In fact, anyone who is interested in
Python (regardless of their experience with it) is welcome to come. Let
your Iowan Python friends know.

Questions or ideas? Send them to me. Thanks!
