[issue1682] Move Demo/classes/Rat.py to Lib/rational.py and fix it up.

2008-01-14 Thread Jeffrey Yasskin

Jeffrey Yasskin added the comment:

Thanks! I've added some minimal documentation and construction from
other Rationals. The other formats for string parsing center around
where whitespace is allowed, and whether you can put parens around the
whole fraction. Parens would, of course, go away if str() no longer
produces them. So they're not significantly different. I guess my
objection to construction from strings is mostly that I'm ambivalent,
and especially for a core library, that means no. If there's support
from another core developer or two, I'd have no objections.

Inexact is saying that one thing could be ==3 and the other ==0, so I
think it's correct.

Negative zeros are a problem. :) I think the default implementations are
still fine, but you're right that classes like Decimal will need to
think about it, and the numbers module should mention the issue. It's
not related to the Rational implementation though, so in another patch.

I've submitted this round as r59974. Onto the next patch! :)

[issue1829] Renaming platform path modules

2008-01-14 Thread Benjamin Peterson

New submission from Benjamin Peterson:

Currently, all the platform-specific path modules (ntpath, macpath, etc)
have normal module names. Since they are implementation details, they
should have a "_" prepended to their names as is the custom for private
objects. I doubt this would break much code: I've never written
witnessed any code outside of the os module that uses the modules.

[issue1771] Remove cmp parameter to list.sort() and builtin.sorted()

2008-01-14 Thread Raymond Hettinger

Raymond Hettinger added the comment:

Yes, it does feel great. The code is cleaner and faster. The API is
simple and matches all the other key= functions in
min/max/nsmallest/nlargest/groupby.

After more thought, I would like to make one more change and require the
arguments to be keywords such as sort(key=str.lower) but not
sort(str.lower).

The issue is that the cmp= interface has been around so long that it is
ingrained into our thinking and in our code. Having to write-out the
keyword makes the intent explicit and will avoid accidently passing in a
cmp= function when a key= function was intended. In Py3.1, the
restriction could be relaxed and l.sort(f) could be accepted for
l.sort(key=f).

For the 2-to-3 tool, I wrote a converter that automatically transitions
code currently using a custom compare function:

2.6 code:  s.sort(cmp=lambda p, q: cmp(p.lower(), q.lower()))
3.0 code:  s.sort(key=CmpToKey(lambda p, q: cmp(p.lower(), q.lower(

Ideally, the automatcic conversion would be accompanied by a suggestion
to manually rewrite to something like:

3.0 code:   s.sort(key=str.lower)

--- converter code ---

def CmpToKey(mycmp):
'Convert a cmp= function into a key= function'
class K(object):
def __init__(self, obj, *args):
self.obj = obj
def __cmp__(self, other):
return mycmp(self.obj, other.obj)
return K

I think Barry's proposal is fine. If we need to update the docs, then

FWIW, the getattr() explanation in the docs already needs to be expanded

[issue1826] operator.attrgetter() should accept dotted attribute paths

2008-01-14 Thread Barry A. Warsaw

Barry A. Warsaw added the comment:

I'm not /personally/ concerned with the breakage because practicality
beats purity, and I don't want to use lambda because it's slower. I've
never used operator.attrgetter() outside the specific use case of
sorted() and list.sort() so I'd like to make it able to be used in all
sorting-by-attribute-chasing use cases.

Other options: have sorted() and list.sort() grow another keyword
argument for the attribute-path; add another method called attrchaser()
in some module that adds the requested functionality.

[issue1826] operator.attrgetter() should accept dotted attribute paths

2008-01-14 Thread Scott Dial

Scott Dial added the comment:

I want to clarify that the proposed change would break:

operator.attrgetter(foo)(bar) == getattr(bar, foo)

Which is the documented intent of the operator module: "This module
exports a set of functions implemented in C corresponding to the
intrinsic operators of Python."

Unless, you are proposing getattr grow this functionality as well. IOW,
should PyObject_GetAttr* perform this recursion? If so, should
PyObject_HasAttr*, PyObject_DelAttr*, PyObject_SetAttr* do this as well?
At the moment, it is possible to have foo's (as in above) that contain
dots despite the inability to spell that in python's dereferencing
syntax. However, I don't know that anybody does that.

anything just exist) at C:\Program Files\test.bat (or change the
reference in the code, but it does need to include spacing). The first
popen call works the second popen call will fail, because there are 2
pathnames in the code with spaces. I am using the popen4 module in os
but I also tested popen2 and popen3 and they do the same thing.

We should clearly separate issues. Changing the organization of files is
entirely independent from fixing the bug reported here, and the issues
must not at all be mixed.

I'm puzzled as to why making the file hidden should have any effect, but
at least that's something that we can try to reproduce.

[issue1215] Python hang when catching a segfault

2008-01-14 Thread Adam Olsen

Adam Olsen added the comment:

In essence, it's a weakness of the POSIX API that it doesn't distinguish
synchronous from asynchronous signals.

The consequences of either approach seem minor though. I cannot imagine
a sane use case for catching SIGSEGV, but documentation changes should
be sufficient anyway.

Suggested wording, if you take the documentation-only approach:
"Because of the precarious nature of how synchronously-generated signals
must be handled, it is impossible to handle them correctly from python.
 You should never install handlers for synchronously-generated signals,
such as SIGSEGV and SIGFPE."

[issue1826] operator.attrgetter() should accept dotted attribute paths

2008-01-14 Thread Barry A. Warsaw

New submission from Barry A. Warsaw:

operator.attrgetter() is neutered because it only accepts a single
attribute name, but it would really be much more useful if it accepted,
and followed a dotted attribute path, e.g.:

Of course attrgetter() would raise AttributeError if the entire path
could not be traversed.

I'm not sure what the point of that would be. Somebody might want to

I am not sure to understand what you mean: xmlrpc is mostly written in
python code.

ceval.c is the place where the interpreter executes python code.
PyEval_EvalFrame is the loop that reads and dispatches each python
instruction.
Of course this function is time-critical, but the problem probably is
that too many python code is executed.

I suggest you to use the python-level profiler:

This may reveal some interesting things in the xmlrpclib module.

[issue1327] Python 2.4+ spends too much time in PyEval_EvalFrame w/ xmlrpmclib

2008-01-14 Thread Eric Sammons

Eric Sammons added the comment:

Please find the attached ceval.c. This file was generated from oprofile
and gives clear indicators where the simple program below gets hung up.

You will find in the oprofile output, from ceval.c, that PyEval_Frame
has a total of 1649 26.2789. This indicates with a high degree of
probabilty that the changes made in this portion of the code are
promblamatic.

Now I will be the first to admit that I am by no means a C programmer;
however, I can tell you that the code has changed a great deal with
regards to xmlrpc and it has impacted performance to the point where it
seems to be unusable with current releases of Python where expected
output is > 300 records.

Please check it out for yourself, using a different xmlrpc server - I
currently have access to one only where the number of records is greater
than 300.

[issue1625] bz2.BZ2File doesn't support multiple streams

2008-01-14 Thread Thomas Lee

Thomas Lee added the comment:

If you're referring to an 'append' mode for bz2file objects, it may be a
limitation of the underlying library: my version of bzlib.h only
provides BZ2_bzWriteOpen and BZ2_bzReadOpen - it's not immediately clear
how you would open a BZ2File in append mode looking at this API.

It may be possible to implement r/w/a using the lower-level
bzCompress/bzDecompress functions, but I doubt that's going to happen
unless somebody (such as yourself? :)) cares deeply about this.

Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit

--===0973828728==--
>>> multipart = MIMEMultipart()
>>> multipart.attach(text)
>>> multipart.set_charset('UTF-8')
Traceback (most recent call last):

enc = b2a_base64(s[i:i + max_unencoded])
TypeError: b2a_base64() argument 1 must be string or read-only buffer,
not list

Explanation
===
The first example above demonstrates that if you call set_charset('UTF-
8') on a MIMEMultipart instance before adding child parts then it is
possible to generate a multipart/* message with an illegal Content-
Transfer-Encoding as specified by RFC 2045[1] "If an entity is
   of type "multipart" the Content-Transfer-Encoding is not permitted to
   have any value other than "7bit", "8bit" or "binary"."

In the second example, I demonstrate that if you try and call
set_charset after adding child parts, the code exceptions. The user
should at least be provided with a more targeted exception.

Notes
=
Where should this be fixed? The smallest fix would be to add a check to
set_charset to see if it is dealing with with a multipart message but
as I express in issue1822 I feel the better design would be to move
this subtype specific logic into the appropriate subclass.

Again, this is something I'm willing to work on in next saturday's bug
day if I can get some feedback on my architectural concerns.

[issue1822] email.mime.multipart.MIMEMultipart.is_multipart() returns false before items have been added.

2008-01-14 Thread Jonathan Share

New submission from Jonathan Share:

Steps to reproduce
==
>>> from email.mime.multipart import MIMEMultipart
>>> foo = MIMEMultipart()
>>> foo.is_multipart()
False

Expected Result
===
True should be returned from MIMEMultipart.is_multipart()

Notes
=
Looking at the implementation of is_multipart() in email.Message it
would appear that if self._payload was initialised to an empty list in
the constructor of MIMEMultipart when _subparts is None, this would be
a sufficient fix for this issue.

However, from an outsider looking into this code for the first time,
this doesn't look like the best architecture, shouldn't the issue of
whether a message has multiple parts, and logic specific to this be
handled through inheritance. With the current implementation the
superclass makes assumptions about how a subclass is implemented, this
just feels wrong. Have I missed something, is there a good reason for
things being as they are today?

Feel free to take the discussion to the python-dev list, I have just
subscribed, and I am interested in fixing this issue myself in the next
bug day if someone can answer my questions above.

FreeBSD has in its ports currently a change for Modules/_ctypes/libffi/
configure.ac that adds amd64-*-freebsd* next to x86_64. I have attached
said patch (but updated to be a diff to trunk) and I hope it can be
changed in trunk to minimize patches in the ports tree.
