According to doc: 
http://docs.python.org/library/curses.html#curses.use_env

curses.use_env() must be called before initscr(), curses man page also 
says so.

But python gives error: _curses.error: must call initscr() first

test.py is the test program, the output should change if your term 
size changed

test_ctypes.py shows the desired behavior.

ps. curses.COLS and curses.LINES doesn't change, but that's another 
story.

Looks like the test failure is a result of a misplaced (twodigits) cast:  
replacing the line

   carry += (twodigits) ( (*aptr) + (u * (*mptr++)) );

in function mont_reduce with

   carry += *aptr + (twodigits)u * *mptr++;

fixes this.

Actually, I've already fixed this for 2.7 (issue 1680159) by letting the
UnicodeDecodeError propagate upward.  I don't think making 'f' in u'foo'
an error would be a good idea.

Unless I'm mistaken the py3 behavior is correct.  If someone has a case
where the py3 message or behavior is incorrect they can reopen (or open
a new issue, since the cause is likely to be different if there is a
problem).

(Actually, the message you get when you do 'o' in b'foo' is...not
obvious; but as I said I think that's a different issue from this one.)

On the principle nothing looks wrong. There are some tabs-vs-spaces
issues in _sre.c. Can some out-of-bounds crash be triggered if an opcode
is greater than 33?

It needs some benchmarks to know whether it's efficient. Also, I think
it would be nice to include regeneration of the opcode table in the
build process. Since it's very light-weight it can be done
unconditionally (I suppose it will be done from setup.py, right?).

Apple doesn't ship py3k yet. I observed the issue originally with my own build 
of 3.0 RC1 (No particular build settings 
were used, just ./configure ; make ; make test). It also happens with the build 
of Python 3.0.1 that is installed on my 
machine (this should be the official MacOS X build from Python.org), on MacOS X 
10.6.2.

It doesn't happen with Python 3.1 anymore (and neither with 2.6.1 and 2.7 Alpha 
1).

In the Doc/ directory, the "make ..." commands do not behave as expected.

*make clean*
It should remove all tools in "tools" directory: docutils, jinja2,
pygments, sphinx.
Currently it removes only "tools/sphinx"

*make update*
It is supposed to "update the Subversion checkouts in `tools/`".
Basically, it does "svn update" for each 4 external tools.
But it is pointless, since these directory are sticked to tag versions.
IMHO, it should be an alias for:
"make clean && make checkout" (if *make clean* is fixed)

[issue7603] There is no 'seq' type

I find myself often writing the following code:

   if isinstance(var, (tuple, list, basestring)):

to determine if a var is indexable and iterable. 

It would be simpler if there were a 'seq' type which is subclassed into 
mutableseq and immutableseq (or something like that). Tuples and strings 
would be children of immutableseq. Lists would be children of 
mutableseq. Then I can do:

   if isinstance(var, seq):

Or to determine if I can edit values I can:

   if isinstance(var, mutableseq):

Actually this should probably not be a bug, maybe a PEP... or something.

This is the only thing I can presently think I would really like to 
correct in Python, because so far Python is the best language I've ever 
had the pleasure to write programs for. Thanks to everyone involved. :)

[issue7604] delattr __slots__ inconsistancy

Everything I've read about __slots__, seen w/ them, etc, they're
effectively just a change in the underlying allocation- yes they can
limit the attributes, but that's about it.

Specifically, for general attribute access/mangling, best I can tell,
they're *supposed* to be exactly equivalent when manipulating the
object- the only difference being the backing store.

That said, delattr against slotted objects vs non slotted differs in a
rather buggy way- even worse, the behaviour differs on slotted classes
dependant on if you're delattr'ing a slotted attr or a nonslotted-
consider the following code.

I'm guessing this isn't intentional/desired?

Confirmed on py2.6/py3.1 also; that said, I'd assume it affects all
versions of python that support __slots__...

For the sake of consistency it changes back to start=curdir. Then, if
the `path` parameter is type bytes and the `start` parameter equals
`curdir`, `start` is set to the bytes version of `curdir`.

Here's a slightly modified version of Trevor's patch:

 - update to apply cleanly to trunk
 - fix misplaced twodigits cast described above
 - add 'PyLong_' prefix to BASE, MASK and SHIFT
 - no need for _PyLong_Copy in l_invmod:  just copy and INCREF the
   pointers
 - don't calculate d - q*c by hand in l_invmod, since l_divmod computes
   the remainder already
 - simplify reference counting in l_invmod
 - add a '* 1U' to a digit-by-digit multiplication, to avoid possible
   (in theory;  unlikely in practice) undefined behaviour resulting
   from signed integer overflow.

The rest of the patch looks fine to me, modulo some minor style issues.

Two points:

- it seems that l_invmod is only ever used to compute the inverse of a 
single-digit long modulo PyLong_BASE.  Mightn't it be more efficient to 
simply do a twodigit/digit-based calculation here instead, to reduce the 
overhead of setting up the Montgomery reductions?

- the current algorithm for three-argument pow involves many allocations 
and deallocations of integers;  it seems to me that these could almost 
all be eliminated:  for pow(a, b, c) with c an n-digit PyLong, just 
allocate 2*n (or possibly 2*n+1) digits of workspace to begin with and 
use that to store intermediate products;  the Montgomery reduction could 
then be done more-or-less in place.  This doesn't work with the non-
Montgomery method, though, since l_divmod doesn't operate in place.

Here is a patch for py3k. It uses the same contents as before but with
changes to the str/bytes wording on getch_doc, putch_doc, and
ungetch_doc. Includes updates to the msvcrt.rst file. Let me know if the
wording seems correct (or if I left anything out).

I went ahead and added docstrings to the debug-only functions as a bonus.

That's fairly tricky. send_header expects two strings (bytes are
not acceptable), and also requires these strings to be ASCII.
This is why it breaks: format_exc returns a non-ASCII string.

I see two options:
a) allow non-Unicode values for keyword and value in send_header,
   and have xmlrpc.server encode the header itself, or
b) properly MIME-encode value if it contains non-ASCII characters
   (keyword really must be ASCII, I think).

Not sure whether there is any precedence for UTF-8 in HTTP
headers.

[issue7607] stringlib fastsearch could be improved on 64-bit builds

The fastsearch algorithm uses a 32-bit mask for the boyer-moore
compression table but stores it as a long.
Since longs can be wider than 32 bits on some platforms (especially,
most 64-bit Unixes), the actual mask width could be platform-dependant
so as to improve the efficiency of the algorithm. Using the SIZEOF_LONG
constant would probably do the trick.

Their solution is to uri encode the UTF8 encoded data.

However, this article references the RFCs, which look like they call for
rfc2047 (MIME) encoded words:

David: I think it's a little bit more complicated. RFC 2616 says that
the value of a header is *TEXT, which is defined as

   The TEXT rule is only used for descriptive field contents and values 
   that are not intended to be interpreted by the message parser. Words 
   of *TEXT MAY contain characters from character sets other than 
   ISO-8859-1 only when encoded according to the rules of RFC 2047

So I think send_header should change in the following way:

a) if isinstance(value, bytes): send value as-is
b) if value can be encoded in latin-1: encode in latin-1, then send as-is
c) otherwise: MIME-encode as UTF-8, using the following algorithm
   1. count the number of non-ascii characters, by encoding with
  ascii, ignore, and comparing result lengths
   2. if there are less than 10% non-ascii character, use the Q encoding
   3. otherwise, use the B encoding

The purpose of the algorithm in c) would be that text containing a few
non-latin characters still comes out right even if the receiver fails to
decode the header.

The same change would also apply to the client-side of sending headers.
On the receiving side, we should offer an option to decode headers (both
for client and server); this should be an option because senders may not
comply with RFC 2616. Reading should then proceed as follows:
1. check whether there are MIME markers in the text
2. if so, MIME-decode
3. if not, decode as latin-1
