Thank you for your courage! This is what we need. True, genuine and
honest stories from people with mental health issues. To demystify
and destigmatize the entire topic. Everybody happily runs to the
doctors to get antibiotics/antivirals for their simple cold and
everybody literally "loves* to complain about how bad they feel when
having a cold. But even today in the year 2021, very few people dare
to go public with their "mental cold" or their "mental cancer". The
danger of mockery or discrimination is still far to high.

All the best, Kyle and good luck! :-)

Thanks! :-)

In case anybody wonders: When I was talking about ASS, I was
referring to "Autismus-Spektrum-Störung". That's German for "Autism
Spectrum Disorder" or short ASD. Happens when it's lake evening, you
have some beers down and talk about a topic in a foreign language. :)

OT: Accessibility: Jana Schroeder's Holman Prize Application

2021-05-10 Thread Jonathan Fine
Perhaps Off Topic, but for a good cause.

This year I met Jana Schroeder, a blind person forced to change jobs as part of
the social cost of Covid. Her outsider experience of computer coding training
became a wish to make things better. She has applied for a Holman Prize
($25,000 over a year) to fund this. She's also set up a survey to reach and
know better those with similar wishes.

One simple way to help open to many is to volunteer to be a sighted helper for
a code and math variant of BeMyEyes.org. I encourage you to listen to Jana's
pitch for a Holman prize, and if you want to help complete the survey (whether
you're blind or sighted, code or math, young or old). I've learnt a lot about
accessibility from Jana.

Jana Schroeder's Holman pitch (90 seconds):

Implementing role-based access control (RBAC) in Flask

2021-05-10 Thread Stephie Glaser
Many frameworks and libraries provide plug-ins for common authorization
patterns like roles, but either don't provide enough of a model to be
helpful or are so rigid that you need to migrate away from them down the
line.

We just released a library that provides a configuration-based approach to
adding role-based access control (RBAC) to your application. The new Oso
Roles library, with support for Python + Flask, speeds up the time it takes
to build fine-grained permissions using roles and related patterns. The
library includes:

   - Role configuration
   - Data management
   - Enforcement
   - End-user configuration
   - Last-mile customizations

The library is in early access. Here are relevant links:

   - Documentation showing how to how to use the library to add roles to a
Flask app with GitClub, our best practice example app:

   http://docs.osohq.com/python/guides/new-roles.html
   - GitClub source code:

The importance of mental health

2021-05-10 Thread Kyle Stanley
Hey all,

In these last few months, I have been in the process of healing from some
pretty heavy past trauma. And now that I am on the road to recovery, I want
to share my journey with the Python community in hopes that it may reach
those that are struggling with their own mental health battles, as many of
us are during these dark and difficult times.

Trigger warning that it includes a decent amount of highly personal
content, so only check it out if you are okay with that:
https://discuss.python.org/t/break-from-open-source/6372/7?u=aeros.

To anyone that would limit my employment opportunities as a result of
having had these struggles, *that's perfectly okay*. I kept the post in the
private section because I was originally in fear of discriminate. However,
I have reached an important conclusion: *I would not want to work for your
company if you discriminate against people who have overcome past struggles*
.
