[python-uk] (London) Looking for venues for Python Projects Night

2017-10-04 Thread S Walker
Good morning,
It's been a while since the last Projects Night, but I'd like to get
them going again. Unfortunately, I'm a little short of venues at the moment.

In case you don't know what it is, the projects night is intended to be
a monthly event where you can go to hack on that project you've been
meaning to hack on (and really will get started on soon, honest), in a
friendly group. This can also be an opportunity to share problems and
maybe find solutions that you might not have found hacking on it in a
sleep deprived state at home.
The meetup group is here:
https://www.meetup.com/London-Python-Project-Nights/

So, if anyone knows a place where (usually) 10 - 20 developers could
hang out and code then I'd love to hear from you.
This can be a workplace (food does not need to be provided) or a
pub/cafe/similar (since we normally order pizza in anyway, having food
available might help).
I'm intending this to be once a month on a Thursday (likely the third
Thursday in the month) night from about 18:30 until ~21:00, but can be
somewhat flexible on times.
There's usually a bit of discussion so anywhere with
library-reading-room standards of quietness will probably not be a great
fit, but we shouldn't be as loud as a band rehearsal.

I'm intending that this starts up again in the new year (January).

As I say, if anyone can suggest/offer venues I'd be most grateful.

Thanks,
Sandy

Re: [python-uk] Reviewing third-party packages

2017-07-27 Thread S Walker
Exactly my point, yes- especially if one were to make a framework designed to
easily analyse such things (when it becomes much easier for the malware because
it for instance could just check whether the framework is in the current env
(as a super-trivial example- but any framework that is easy to run is likely to
be easy to adapt to for this sort of code).

It'd certainly be feasible to check for outgoing calls though, at least for
relatively simple cases (on-import, when calling with particular args), but I
think the licensing, etc issues are probably easier to solve-ish and maintain,
so probably a better starting point. This is just a gut feeling though- I've
done this stuff manually in the past when I've needed to.

Presumably you want to spy on outbound network activity from your test
machine, rather than analysing code?

That is if they haven't written their code so it is aware of the
characteristics of 'malware analytics environments'. Basically it's dormant if
it thinks it is being observed. Something which is very common these days. At
least at the cutting edge of such things.

I suspect malicious phone-home (and other deliberately malicious security)
stuff would be very difficult to automatically test for, as you're then in a
Volkswagen situation and you'll be entering into an arms race with anyone who
is taking such malicious actions.

For other aspects, I'm afraid I don't know of anything beyond manual checking.
This could be something interesting to suggest for a PyconUK sprint though,
unless anyone finds anything useful before then? I'm not sure how easy
automated tool checks would be for it, but at least a list of things to analyse
for python packages would be nice.

I've read comments on here supporting there being job postings as they
are of use to the community (I think all of us like being able to afford
to eat, right?), and I'd tend to agree with that.

Maybe a better idea would be to put guidelines for job posting (e.g. not
more than x frequency, containing at least y details).

Frankly if we didn't have people complaining about the job postings each
time they were made they'd be responsible for a negligible amount of
list traffic.

[python-uk] Build Something- London Python Project Nights

2016-09-23 Thread S Walker

is interested)

Good morning,
The next Build Something will be next Wednesday- sorry for the late
notice, just giving people a little time to recover from PyconUK!

RSVP at:
https://www.meetup.com/London-Python-Project-Nights/events/234327502/

It's the SW1 Broadway, not the East London (or any other) one.

With many thanks to BMLL Technologies Ltd, and Steve Holden, for
agreeing to provide a place for us to meet.

As a side note, Steve has said that he'll have a bunch of hardware (of
the burning-your-fingers-with-solder variety) there for anyone
interested in playing with that. If you're not sure how to get started
or worried that all you'll be able to produce is magic smoke, he has
also quite graciously said that he is willing to provide an introduction.

So, if you want to get a quick introduction to some electronics, or work
on an existing (or new) project, please come along!

Thanks,

As people have mentioned, the consensus that I've seen is that posting a
job ad is fine so long as it's not recruiter spam.

Of course, recruiters advertising for a specific job with an appropriate
level of detail about the job in question (location, salary, expectation
of role, desired skills and experience, information about what the
company does) is also fine.

What is recruiter spam? How about, "exciting opportunity for Python
ninja in green-field project at one of London's most exciting employers"
is, IMHO, NOT welcome. It's just meaningless noise and probably
recruitment phishing.

Hope this helps,

N.
