Re: [QGIS-Developer] [Qgis-user] A nice task for a community member: revamping the QGIS github landing page

2021-02-23 Thread Ben Hur Pintor
+1 on adding geometry generators as a bullet point.

I was thinking that aside from the screenshot/images, we can also add links
directly to the bullet points that would send readers/users to a good
resource discussing that bullet point/feature. There are already quite a
number of good resources (e.g. videos and blog posts by the community --
videos and posts by Klas, Anita, Nyall, Tim, etc. -- as well as the
official documentation) discussing some of the features we want to
highlight. Might be good to have those on the README as well.

All the best,
Ben Hur

Hi Martin,

I would like to help you with this in case you need it. I'm fairly
comfortable with both QGIS' capabilities and working with Markdown. Do let
me know how I can help and how we can collaborate.

Thanks!

Re: [QGIS-Developer] [Qgis-user] Thoughts on QGIS Development and LTR Releases

2020-02-29 Thread Ben Hur Pintor
Hi everyone,

I'm not a QGIS developer but I've been a user since 1.X days. Aside from a
few quirks (e.g. dependency issues on Linux), I've always liked the QGIS
release cycle so I'm coming from that perspective.

To add to Alexandre's explanation, this is usually how I explain QGIS
releases:
There are 3 branches of development - LR (Latest Release), LTR (Long Term
Release), and nightly builds. Let's take a look at the LR and LTR branches.

I usually take "maintained" to mean that the branch is actively developed
-- bugs will be fixed, new features are added, etc.

The LTR (now 3.10.3) is maintained until the next LTR (in 12 months when
3.16.4 becomes the LTR). During those 12 months, a PR (Point Release) will
be released for the LTR branch each month (named 3.10.4, 3.10.5, ...,
3.10.14). This PR includes the bug fixes for 3.10.X. Being an LTR means
that there (usually) won't be any changes that will break that version in 1
year. This is usually why people think of LTR as "stable".

The LR (now 3.12.0) contains the most recent features of QGIS. A new LR is
released every 4 months. The next LR (3.14) is slated to be released in
June 2020, the next after that is 3.16 in October 2020. The 2nd LR released
after the release of the LTR is the version that will become the next LTR.
In this case, the 3.16 version that will be released in October 2020 is
slated to become the LTR after 4 months (e.g. 3.16.4 will become the LTR by
February 2021). For each month, a PR is also released for the LR branch
until a new LR is released. For example, there will be a 3.12.1, 3.12.2,
and 3.12.3 releases for March, April, and May 2020 until the 3.14 release
in June. This repeats for 3.14.1,..,3.14.3 until the 3.16 release in
October. Throughout the year, there can be big changes between LR versions
(e.g. between 3.12, 3.14, and 3.16) as compared to the LTR which stays at
3.10.X. It's also worth noting that useful features in the LR branch can be
backported (added to) the LTR branch.

The "LR/PR" released every 4 months denotes that the release is a new LR.
The "LTR/PR" released in October denotes that this release will be the next
LTR. It is not put in the LTR repo until 4 months later (February) where it
officially becomes the LTR.

We can also think of it this way:
For the LTR branch, you can expect updates every month of its life (or with
every point release) with 3.10.3, 3.10.4, 3.10.5, ..., 3.10.14 but these
will usually be minor and not so drastic.
Meanwhile, there may be drastic and major changes between LRs like 3.12,
3.14, 3.16, etc. but only minor changes between PRs of the same LR -- eg
3.12.1 and 3.12.2, 3.14.1 and 3.14.2, etc.

I also agree that the road map found at
https://www.qgis.org/en/site/getinvolved/development/roadmap.html is geared
a lot towards dev people but, in its defense, it is located under the "Get
Involved/Development" part of the documentation.

If I have misrepresented or misunderstood anything, please don't hesitate
to correct me.

All the best,
Ben Hur

Re: [QGIS-Developer] [Qgis-user] Buffer Algorithm (Buffer distance of output polygon is not equal to the Distance parameter)

2018-09-27 Thread Ben Hur Pintor
That's odd. I redid the entire thing just now (restarted QGIS, made scratch
point layer, created a 100m buffer) and the values I get are now correct.
Even the area computations were off in the first one but after redoing the
process, everything looks good.

Weird. Maybe I missed something during the first one. Hahaha.

Anyway, sorry for bothering you all.

Cheers!

[QGIS-Developer] Buffer Algorithm (Buffer distance of output polygon is not equal to the Distance parameter)

2018-09-27 Thread Ben Hur Pintor
Hi everyone.

I apologize if this has been asked before but I would just like to clarify
if this is how the buffer algorithm in QGIS should function.

*Issue:* The actual distance from the input layer to the buffer polygon
created by the Buffer processing tool (and v.buffer) is not equal (only
around 80%) to the Distance parameter provided in the said tool.

*Example:* My coordinate reference system is WGS84/UTM Zone 51N (EPSG:
32651). I create a 100m buffer around a point but when I measure the
resulting circle, its edge is only ~80m from the point (see buffer-point
and buffer-point-distance below).

 buffer-point.png

 buffer-point-distance.png

I create a 50m buffer around a line but when I measure the resulting
buffer, its edge is only ~40m from the line (see line-buffer and
line-buffer-distance below).

 line-buffer.png

 line-buffer-distance.png

Clarifications will be much appreciated. Maybe I just missed some part of
the documentation.

Thank you.

Sincerely,
Ben Hur

Re: [QGIS-Developer] How to build QGIS 2.99 with 3D?

2017-12-11 Thread Ben Hur Pintor
I remember bumping into an error when I turned that option on last time.
Will try again. Thanks!

Thanks also for your awesome work with QGIS 3D, I used it in one my
research projects in grad school this semester and people have been
pleasantly surprised that I could do 3D with Q. I'm doing my best to get
more people here to use Q and showcasing the new features in the upcoming
QGIS 3 release (like 3D support) is one of the ways I thought of.

Cheers!

it'd be a bit of a hassle to have multiple build directories just to test
3D and then other stuff.

 @Matthias

Did you also build PyQt for the custom installed Qt 5.9?

I don't remember doing so. Should I build it myself or will installing it
via pip suffice? I'm thinking if I can build using a virtual env with all
the python dependencies installed there. Thanks!

Re: [QGIS-Developer] How to build QGIS 2.99 with 3D?

2017-12-06 Thread Ben Hur Pintor
Hi! Sorry if I'm late to the party but I've regularly been able to build
2.99 with 3D support using the instructions from (a)
https://github.com/qgis/QGIS/blob/master/INSTALL supplemented by (b)
https://www.lutraconsulting.co.uk/blog/2017/08/06/qgis3d-build/ on my
Xubuntu 16.04 machine. I didn't encounter any problems with building Qt5.9,
Qwt, etc though.

The only problem/issue I've had was that plugins are unavailable when
running the built QGIS. The Settings tab of "Manage and Install Plugins"
says "No Python support detected thus no settings available." I don't know
if that's normal because I've only tried building QGIS recently. If you're
able to build with 3D support or if you know whether this is normal, maybe
you can also help a brother out.

Thanks!

Re: [QGIS-Developer] Queries on building QGIS 3.

2017-11-29 Thread Ben Hur Pintor
Thanks! This works.

Basically, I created a bash script with the following lines:

#!/bin/bash
> export
> LD_LIBRARY_PATH=$LD_LIBRARY_PATH:/opt/qt59/lib/:/opt/qt59_libs/qwt-6.1.3/lib/
> ./apps/bin/qgis

Works like a charm.

I'm still getting the "No Python support detected thus no settings
available." message in the Plugins though. Any ideas why?

Cheers!

[QGIS-Developer] Queries on building QGIS 3.

2017-11-29 Thread Ben Hur Pintor
Hi all! I built QGIS master (2a960c5) using the instructions from (a)
https://github.com/qgis/QGIS/blob/master/INSTALL supplemented by (b)
https://www.lutraconsulting.co.uk/blog/2017/08/06/qgis3d-build/ because I
wanted to try the new 3D features. My machine runs on Xubuntu 16.04. The
build works fine but I noticed a few things.

1.) Plugins are unavailable when running QGIS from ./output/bin/qgis of the
build directory. The Settings tab of "Manage and Install Plugins" says "No
Python support detected thus no settings available." Is this normal? I've
only tried building QGIS recently so I don't know if it is.

2.) After doing a ninja install, running qgis from {$HOME}/apps/bin fails
because it can't find the shared libraries that I used in (b). I tried
making simlinks to the said libraries to (b) but to no avail. Is there an
updated/better way to build QGIS with 3D support on Xubuntu 16.04 or should
I stick to running from the build directory?

3.) What's the update or plan for the Processing -> Commander function in
QGIS 3? I can't seem to find it in my build.

Thank you in advance. Cheers!

Re: [QGIS-Developer] multipartToSingleParts via code

2017-06-14 Thread Ben Hur Pintor
What do you mean by *"The plugin runs correctly only the FIRST time.*
*Then, when it finishes, if I run again the plugin choosing an input2
vectorlayer, the processing algorithm doesn't see the input2 and my ouput
remains output1."? *

Are you calling the algorithm inside a loop? May I have a look at your
code? Maybe the issue is in the Python code and not necessarily on QGIS.

I usually use *processing.runandload()* because it automatically adds the
resulting layer.

Re: [QGIS-Developer] multipartToSingleParts via code

2017-06-12 Thread Ben Hur Pintor
Hi Stefano.

Correct me if I'm wrong but my understanding is that you want to be able to
call "multiparttosingleparts" in his code the same way you call dissolve.

Something like:

from qgis.xxx import *
xxx = YYY
xxx.multiparttosingleparts(input, output)

Have you tried looking at the API?

I haven't used the qgis processing algorithims in my Python code that way
since they already work fine the way they do now. May I know why you'd like
such a use case?
