Re: [QGIS-Developer] QGIS.org new website now online

2024-07-15 Thread DelazJ via QGIS-Developer

Hi list, PSC

Thanks to all for the efforts put in the new website. Nice work.

I didn't see any related discussion so I suppose there is no issue with
that but could there be a reply whether the documentation or the Desktop
would be concerned by the no-translation decision, please? Thanks.

It is still unclear to me why the decision to not translate the website,
but I must admit that I'm aware of it for months so this is not the
point today. I thought there would just be no translated site.

What is unclear to me in the "leaving user groups hold their translated
QGIS.ORG website" is how technically user groups that would like to
provide localized website would proceed. Is there any how-to? Are all
the candidates able to maintain the required infrastructure and keep
their website up to date? Being an enthusiast translator doesn't mean a
"geek". And are we not over-complicating the system, splitting the
resources we have while a centralized translation system at QGIS.ORG
could benefit to everyone? How about the translation infrastructure is
managed by QGIS.ORG linked to the qgis-hugo repo BUT qgis.org does not
provide translated pages on the website. Translated strings are just
pulled in the repo and then every user group willing to translate
somehow plugs to the (forked?) repo and build the localized version they
want and serve it on their own website? Is this possible?

Sorry if there have been discussions related to this I would have
missed, but translators and non-English speaking users are getting
confused or at least, have questions. And having a clear direction and
information might help.

Kind regards,

Harrissou

Hi Tim,
thank you for information and your work.

please can you explain how content consistency will be ensured between
the English original of qgis.org and the forks of
local communities who want to translate the content not only of the
web pages but also of the documentation etc.?

currently, thanks to transifex, new English contents are uploaded to
transifex and after translation operations would be flipped to
qgis.org translated pages e.g. qgis.org/it
 for Italian.

how do we do that now?

thank you very much

Hi all

? The new website is now online! Visit https://qgis.org to try it
out. We
have spent a *lot* of time trying to QA things but undoubtedly
there will
still be some *gremlins* in the works. Please file issues here
if you find things that are
*substantive* issues (i.e. a broken link, spelling error) and not
'reviews'
of our work please. If you have other comments or suggestions for
improvements, we much prefer that they be accompanied by *PR's* which
implement your proposed improvements to keep our workload down and the
issue queue short.

? *We would love to get some more representative
images/screenshots for
the front and top level pages, so PR's addressing those will be
treated
with priority.*

??Thank you so much to the Kontur team (Aliaksandra, Andrei, Nadzeya,
Tigran, Darafei and more!), the members of the website working
group that
we formed, Anniina, Lova, Richard, J?rgen, Anita, Andreas. Amy,
Thiasha,
Jeremy Prior, and the many others (apologies for not naming you
individually) who contributed ideas, work, and support in the process.

? Please note that your browser / ISP / DNS server and similar may be
caching qgis.org and the DNS entries related to
it. Before reporting an
issue:

1. Try an anonymous browser to see if things work normally there
2. Try clearing your cache in your browser
3. Potentially you may need to wait a little for DNS propagation
to complete

Hi Abdelghani, list,
Abdelghani, (unless I misunderstand) could you please share where you found
native tools to export 3d map to **gltf** format? I'm having issues with
qgis2threejs so if anything native is already there, I'd be happy to give it a
try.

Re: [QGIS-Developer] Broken doctest infrastructure for Cookbook

2024-05-22 Thread DelazJ via QGIS-Developer

Hello devs,

me again, for requesting a fix for the docs, but this time the issue
also affects the pyQGIS documentation, broken for already two weeks
(https://github.com/qgis/pyqgis/issues/139 and
https://github.com/qgis/pyqgis/actions). I suspect the new qgis/QGIS
docker recipe to be the root cause, maybe a new Python or OS version
that applies PEP 668; unability to execute pip in a docker as we used
do. I've tried a number of recipes I found in the Internet, but... I've
never been comfortable with docker, so failed.

A charitable person to help get fix the docs sites? Or one (I could
still reproduce the fix on the other)? Thanks.

Regards,

Harrissou.

PS: Thanks Nyall for helping on the previous issue.

Re: [QGIS-Developer] Build problems using install instructions -building branches

2024-05-22 Thread DelazJ via QGIS-Developer

Hi,

These instructions in the INSTALL.md lack a context and are quite
confusing there IMHO. They should probably go to the developers guide
(https://docs.qgis.org/testing/en/docs/developers_guide/git.html#development-in-branches).
It is more a git/development tip than a build instructions.

Assuming that "origin" is your remote pointing to

from your release-3_36 directory:
git fetch origin release-3_36
git reset --hard origin/release-3_36    # make sure you have no local

[QGIS-Developer] Review of benevolent pull requests

2024-02-19 Thread DelazJ via QGIS-Developer
Hi psc and devs,
I think there was a discussion few months ago about how to handle pull
requests queue on the code repo, and I'm not sure what was the decision taken.
Maybe do i mixup the decisions but I thought some funds would be made available
to some devs who will help review the unpaid contributions. Am I right and was
there something initiated?

Anyway, may I meanwhile kindly request some review for these following PRs
(I'm not the author, just commented, and they have been going stale many times
these last months and most significantly authors are unfortunately getting
desperate):

Re: [QGIS-Developer] Download troubles? Download in the background?

2023-09-21 Thread DelazJ via QGIS-Developer
Hi,

At https://github.com/qgis/QGIS-Website/pull/1184, I made a pull request to
update the "Thank you" text based on Nick's suggestion (basically, put
download info in bold and split whole text in many paragraphs). I do not
feel really comfortable with mentioning support (companies) there, or do I
not find the right formulation...
Whoever feels interested in fixing that part of the issue, the source files
are accessible generally from the "fix me" URL at the bottom of the page or
under https://github.com/qgis/QGIS-Website/tree/master/themes/qgis-theme.

Re: [QGIS-Developer] No module named 'qgslayoutchecker' using "qgis/qgis:latest"

2023-06-01 Thread DelazJ via QGIS-Developer
Hi Matthias and list,

Thanks for the attempt but unfortunately this didn't solve the issue and
the doctest failure didn't stop popping. ;(
If ever someone wwants to give it another look, the docs repository
watchers would greatly appreciate.

Greetings and thanks,

Hi devs,

Can someone please give it a look. Having every single commit report a
failure for no (valid) reason is quite noisy and annoying. (issue report at

Hi Paolo,
Yes, we do have the same problems with testing in QGIS-Documentation

3.28 is fine.

Re: [QGIS-Developer] [Qgis-psc] [Qgis-community-team] QGIS webserver size vs publishing old docs

2023-03-21 Thread DelazJ via QGIS-Developer
Hi,
Thanks all for the feedback

I second the (somewhat reformulated by myself) opinion that we shouldn't
just buy space or disk because we would be financially able to do so. Not
sure it is a sustainable behavior and we'd just be postponing the issue
(remember, pyqgis repo is also concerned). We rather should identify what
we do really want/need to provide to our community. So I'm glad you'll
discuss this at Den Bosch.* (and I keep updating my list of todo for the
sys admin)*
I also second the suggestion to delete 2.8 and 2.14. It'd release enough
space to serve 3.28.

About the questions:
Hannes, the folders are so big because they serve (in about 15 to 20
languages):
- the HTML files (the ones we all know)
- the PDF files (e.g. https://docs.qgis.org/3.22/pdf/)
- and the zipped HTML files (https://docs.qgis.org/3.22/zip/) for local use
for people that do not have full access to WEB but not sure if anyone is
using them. It could be interesting to know stats of downloads (if any).

About why 3.10 is bigger than 3.22, it had two languages we no longer
publish, and looks like we managed somehow to provide smaller files
(plugins and third-party providers chapters that were removed on the road?
樂)

Bernd, sorry for the old docs popping up during search. Unfortunately, not
something new [0], and we still are looking for people with knowledge in
this area to help us improve the situation. What I usually do is to replace
the version number in the URL and most of the times, it work well unless
the file has been restructured.
The line that shows the top message is at [1]. If someone knows how we can
add the section anchor to that URL, suggestions are more than welcome.

[QGIS-Developer] QGIS webserver size vs publishing old docs

2023-03-20 Thread DelazJ via QGIS-Developer
Hi all (and sorry for the cross-post)

Richard has raised the issue a couple of times with no specific
feedback/decision but I think now we NEED to go forward : there is not
enough space on our servers to store everything we want to share.
Yesterday, I updated the docs infrastructure to serve translated versions
of the 3.28 documentation but they are not published this morning, probably
because of lack of space to get them pasted.

# du -hs *
255Mdoc-test
579MQGIS-Documentation
7.2GQGIS-Documentation-2.14
6.3GQGIS-Documentation-2.18
7.7GQGIS-Documentation-2.8
12G QGIS-Documentation-3.10
11G QGIS-Documentation-3.16
9.4GQGIS-Documentation-3.22
579MQGIS-Documentation-3.28
8.0GQGIS-Documentation-3.4
31G QGIS-tests
16G QGIS-Website

An option could be to rent a bigger webserver but a few
questions/suggestions so far (I'm only speaking for the docs as I don't
know what is behind other folders):
- Do we need to serve all these versions? FYI we recently silently removed
and redirected <2.8 docs (and nobody complained) so we could probably be
more "aggressive"
- It could be nice to define some strategy on this area: e.g. we keep
publishing master, current LTR, previous LTR and any older URL is
redirected to current LTR --> meaning that today we would be serving only
testing in English, 3.28 and 3.22 in English + translations. OR one more
older LTR (ie 3.16)?

PS: this issue somehow also affects the PyQGIS documentation repo [0], due
to github-pages size limits

Harrissou

[QGIS-Developer] Expression to sort by multiple fields

2022-12-05 Thread DelazJ via QGIS-Developer
Hi QGISers,

I struggled and failed to find a way to use QGIS expressions functions in
order to select features based on sorting on different fields. I played
with aggregates, arrays, maps but couldn't find how to control sort order
(and imbricate it). I finally generated virtual layers to do the work but
would really love to select and not extract.
The need in SQL is something like:

select somefields, afield, st_length(geometry) as longueur, geometry
from mylayer
where longueur < 10*order by afield desc, longueur asc*
limit 5

Any help would be more than welcome.
Thanks in advance

Kind regards,
Harrissou

Re: [QGIS-Developer] Issue with qgis Docker images starting from qgis:final-3_22_10

Hi,

I also confirm this issue for the QGIS 3.22 documentation (
https://github.com/qgis/QGIS-Documentation/issues/7858) but afaict, tests
were still passing mid october (hence with 3.22.11).

Hi QGIS Developers,

One last reminder before I go in search of that new network you all would
have been on. It's reassuring to discover that there are other channels; at
least I can say to myself that the total silence to my call is not due to
some disinterest.

[QGIS-Developer] Documentation repository looking for developers

2022-10-20 Thread DelazJ via QGIS-Developer
Hi dear devs,

With feature freeze/bug fixes period almost finished, and before you get
busy with pushing cool and nice features for the next 3.30 branch, I'd like
to share with you a few cool features the documentation repo will also be
really happy to get from your skills.

*Code/Setup*

1. Create a github action to automatically assign labels to issue reports
generated from merged pull requests in code repo, to help us quickly
triage. See #50562 and #7826

2. To the generated issue reports, we also have to assign the milestone,
that is the next LTR we will document it in... An automatic assignment
would also be great. See #7828

3. If the move away from Transifex is not yet on the radar, a github action
to regularly pull unfinished translation files would be welcome. See #7827

4. Help setup the release branches to allow automatic merge when tests
pass. See #7837

5. Fix text frame width in the pyQGIS API documentation. See #36

*Writing*

If you instead feel like writing , there are some outdated, confusing
instructions in the docs for beginners in coding:

1. how to configure python path

from within QGIS or custom application: See #6179
 and attempts to
fix it at #6306 ,
#7139 and #7140

2. methods and tools to debug code/plugins: see #7836

3. as usual, review of current pull requests
 is still welcome

*Triage*

If you don't feel like coding nor writing, you can just tell us whether you
think that any of these reports is worth documenting and how we could
address it: ToDocOrNotToDoc

As you can see, the needs are diverse; it is about coding, setup, triaging
and writing so you probably will find something for you (I hope) and do it
faster than in my unsuccessful attempts.
*The docs needs the devs*.

Kind regards and looking forward,
Harrissou

Re: [QGIS-Developer] QGIS-Documentation fails to build

2022-05-19 Thread DelazJ via QGIS-Developer
Hi,
well...
For your information, I disabled the doctest github action
<https://github.com/qgis/QGIS-Documentation/actions/workflows/doctest.yml>,
to stop getting annoyed by (unrelated) failure messages for each
interaction with the repository.
That also means no more checks for the PyQGIS Cookbook changes (which
includes this recent pull request
<https://github.com/qgis/QGIS-Documentation/pull/7559>), until we get a fix.

Greetings,
Harrissou

Hi devs,
The "doctest" workflow in QGIS-Documentation repository is again broken. We
are getting a segmentation fault [0]. This might have begun at least 5 days
ago, only on master branch. The 3.22 doctest passes.
If someone can give it a look, it will be much appreciated. Thanks.

Re: [QGIS-Developer] Override System Locale user interface with American English by Default?

2022-03-31 Thread DelazJ via QGIS-Developer
Hi,
I've been chatting with Transifex guys for the docs and indeed, they made
me confirm that we want to 3.16 and 3.20 desktop resources. And as they
told you, Jürgen, they were supposed to do it and let us know.
Anyway, I asked them again last night about this. So let's give them few
days (again).

harrissou

Re: [QGIS-Developer] Override System Locale user interface with American English by Default?

2022-03-24 Thread DelazJ via QGIS-Developer
Hi,
I'm sure I'm not a particular case: when I'm asked to select a language, I
usually look after the one I'm the most comfortable with and select it. And
in this case, I guess most of pt_PT people seeing their language in the
list will still pick that language, ignoring there are issues with it.

Mathieu there's already a value check: only languages with 35% are pulled
into code base. The issue here is that pt_PT has issues with the quality of
the translated strings.

Regards,
Harrissou

 Hi,

I have raised this before, but I wanted to ask for it again. Currently,
QGIS default is not to Override System Locale and use the system's locale
 for User interface.

If the system locale language happens to have good and reliable
translations, this works well, but when the language is incomplete or
poorly translated, this IMHO poses a problem.

The European Portuguese translation is quite poor, with many errors and
bad translations. In the end it is sometimes hard to work with the GUI in
PT_pt. To me the bad thing is it looks bad on the project reputation and
people (users) read it as a symptom of bad quality software, which is not
 the case.

So, I wanted to suggest if we could have American english as the
default for the GUI? Would this be reasonable?

 Thanks,

 Alexandre Neto
