Re: [Qgis-developer] Fwd: [SoC] Re: [mentors] OSGeo ranking procedure - deadline today!
One question/suggestion: is it possible to have some kind of link/coordination between GSoC projects? I am saying this because the main aim of the Orfeo Toolbox backend for the Sextante framework in QGIS one is to improve SEXTANTE and add new tools to it, but it would be a bad idea not to try to incorporate the result of other ones line Vector Layer Generalization for QGIS or QGIS tool for vector data merging into SEXTANTE as well. If, as we discussed in Lyon, the idea is to try to have a common place for all analysis tools, it is not a good start if new proposals of analytical tools do not get included in that common framework. I will be more than pleased to help whoever works on those projects(mentors and students), in order to have the routines and methods incorporated as SEXTANTE algorithms as well. Re: [Qgis-developer] Fwd: [SoC] Re: [mentors] OSGeo ranking procedure - deadline today!
- Vector Layer Generalization for QGIS From what I understand of the proposal, it will be a more lower level core QGIS thing. Implemented at the rendering/fetching level into to speed up vector layer drawing. Not really a post process step. If it is a rendering tool, then you are right, it doesn't fit here... -QGIS tool for vector data merging IMO it would be implemented in core C++ and have a public API in order to wrap it into a SEXTANTE plugin in Python. that was exactly what i tried to say :-) That extra effort I mentioned is just that public API and that wrapper. But it would be good to try to have all analysis tools wrapped somehow, to make the analytical side of QGIS more compact and homogeneous. i was basically encouraging people to create SEXTANTE wrappers or at least thinnk about that when designing their tools :-) I, once again, remind that I will be pleased to work on that and help people who work on such analytical plugins. I am thinking about wrapping the Statist plugin, keeping its nice GUI, which will be a perfect example for showing how to do that and enjoy the advantages of SEXTANTE (such as, for instance, being able to use the value of one of the generated statistical values as input for another algorithm in the modeler). Hope to have it ready soon. Re: [Qgis-developer] SEXTANTE backends
that is a question that should be discussed. Algorihtm providers in SEXTANTE can be turned off, so I would prefer to have them all together, since the size is rather small, and to activate them within SEXTANTE. However, there is already a mechanism for creating plugins that connect their algorithms into SEXTANTE, for those who prefer to develop them outside of SEXTANTE and distribute them separately as well. As I said, in the case of small plugins, it should not be a problem to include them in SEXTANTE. The main issue I see is related to providers using external apps and how to distribute them. I think that this should also be discussed. For now, I will keep all the backends and algorithms that I develop in one single plugin along with the SEXTANTE core. If other developers want their algorithms also included there, just tell me. And if someone creates its own provider as an external plugin, it should be clearly stated that it requires SEXTANTE, so people can install it in advance and also can search for SEXTANTE-based plugins. [Qgis-developer] Extending SEXTANTE algorithms in QGIS (a new plugin/example)
Hi all As some people mentioned, is important to incorporate more algorithms into SEXTANTE to make it become some kind of standarized geoanalysis platform within QGIS. For this reason, I have added a small plugin named SEXTANTE Example Provider, which is a plugin with a single algorithm provider that plugs one algorithm to SEXTANTE. It should serve as an example for all who are interested in developing new algorithms based on SEXTANTE. The code is fully commented to explain each thing that is done. One of the main goals of SEXTANTE is to make it as easy as possible to develop spatial analysis algorithms and make them available within a GIS, and I guess this example show pretty well how easy that is. I hope it encourages other users and developers to add new algorithms and to use SEXTANTE as their base platform for that. The plugin requires the latest version of SEXTANTE with some recent changes made to include this pluggable architecture, which I have just uploaded, so please update in case you want to use it. Also, GRASS algorithms are now available, though it is rather unstable and I have to polish algorithm descriptions, but at least those of you who are curious about it can have a first look at it (although is likely not to be really usable yet). Markus, GRASS is integrated in SEXTANTE for QGIS just like it is in the Java version of SEXTANTE (with some slight improvements that I am doing...). However, I started the integration with SAGA and R before, and those are now available from SEXTANTE, since more or less they work fine, but GRASS is still unfinished and I have preferred to deactivate it by now until it is finished, so you will not see it in the list of available algorithms (I prefer not to confuse early testers with things that are not yet working properly...). However, I am currently working on that and you will have it soon ready You opinion on this is more than welcome, as it was when I was developing the GRASS-SEXTANTE connection for the Java version And as Giovanni said, SEXTANTE is the framework, so you will have GRASS tools also in other elements like the graphical modeler, the batch processing interface, the Python console, etc Regards ___ Qgis-developer mailing list Qgis-developer@lists.osgeo.org http://lists.osgeo.org/mailman/listinfo/qgis-developer
[Qgis-developer] Problem uploading plugin
Hi all I have tried to upload my SEXTANTE plugin to the plugin repository, but it says that it is too big (it has around 1.5 MB). Any solution to this? Otherwise, I will just put the zip file in the SEXTANTE website, but that is not such a good solution, I guess. Regqards and thanks in advance Victor ___ Qgis-developer mailing list Qgis-developer@lists.osgeo.org http://lists.osgeo.org/mailman/listinfo/qgis-developer

Alex, Yes, plugins.qgis.org It would be great if the limit was a bit higher Thanks in advance Victor ___ Qgis-developer mailing list Qgis-developer@lists.osgeo.org http://lists.osgeo.org/mailman/listinfo/qgis-developer
Re: [Qgis-developer] Directions needed for GSOC Proposal
I'm available, even though there may be more effective mentors for this. I do not know if he's available, but in case you choose sextante, Victor seems the natural choice. If the work to do is based on SEXTANTE, then I am definitely available, and really willing to do it :-) Regards ___ Qgis-developer mailing list Qgis-developer@lists.osgeo.org http://lists.osgeo.org/mailman/listinfo/qgis-developer
Re: [Qgis-developer] Re: QGIS Processing Framework
Nathan, thanks for proposing not to put pressure on me :-). I think that I will have things ready soon and then I would like the community to test everything. Honestly, I wanted to wait a bit more, but saw the email about the processing framework and thought it was worth advancing it...but i hope that things do not go too fast now. Better to take it easily :-) Can any one tell me about that Lyon meeting/event? I live in France, so it is very easy for me to go there, and would love to meet other developers and people from the QGIS community, and discuss whatever with them Thanks again El día 22 de marzo de 2012 11:59, Werner Macho werner.ma...@gmail.com escribió: -BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE- Hash: SHA1 Hi! Re: [Qgis-developer] gsoc 2012
By the way, which one should be considered as the main home page for SEXTANTE?: https://joinup.ec.europa.eu/software/sextante/description http://www.sextantegis.com/ http://sextante.googlecode.com/ sextantegis.com is the official one. The google code one is where the code is kept. The joinup one is our previous platform, but for some reason they do not remove the project from there, although we have asked that many times :-( By the way, I also think that duplication is not bad, and some algorithms in SEXTANTE will be repeated, but that is good as long as the interface is clear and represents a global entry point for all analysis task whitin QGIS (that is what I am trying to do...)
