2017-05-04 Thread roy roy
Hi,

i'm experiencing problems with saga

in processing toolbox, SAGA modules they do

not work, it seems like SAGA have been updated (2.3.1)

but processing is not longer compatible with the new

version, is this true or do I have a specific problem with

my setup ?

Re: [Qgis-developer] A couple of ideas for QGIS

2017-04-05 Thread roy roy

Thanks Mattias for the info,

I do not have a predetermined preference
between geopackage and spatialite

if you don't mind,

i do not know very well the gpkg format but
I understand that it's not spatialite.

I'd like to understand the pros or cons
between the two formats

does geopackage support:

-SQLite SQL language with triggers
joins aggregate etc..

-SQL spatial query

-coordinate tranformation

-SQL VIEWS

-non spatial tables

-i mean is it a fully featured database
or does it uses another language ?

-High level difference beetween geopackage
and spatialite?

I can grasp spatialite in 5 min knowing
that i'ts a fully featured SQL relational database
but cannot wrap my head around geopackage:

"GeoPackage Encoding Standard governs the rules and requirements of content
stored in a GeoPackage container" ...so is geopackage a set of rules on
how data
should be store into an SQLite database?

in the end (for now) i find spatialite much more
intuitive and i think QGIS would benefit
supporting at least point 1 (drop column from spatialite)

thanks for any insight, Roy.

[Qgis-developer] A couple of ideas for QGIS

2017-04-03 Thread roy roy
Dear QGIS Developers,

I think QGIS would benefit adding the following features;
if you find them interesting they may be added to QGIS 3.0:

1 - Better support for Spatialite tables:

it is now impossible to remove columns from a spatialite
table, i know it's not supported by SQLite but there is a
simple work around that consists in creating a new table
without the removed column/s

2 - Save project data into SQLite/Spatialite db:

this would grant users the choice to save all the work
in one unique file ( data, layer style ), very handy for
backups and sharing/shipping

i'm not a c++ developer but i can help with docs
and testing.
best regards,

Roy.

Hi, witch version of QGIS are you using,
I don't see this problems in 2.14 Ubuntu

I noticed since a couple of days that the UI of Processing look like it
is not gridded (see attachment).

Is this something of my local machine?

[Qgis-developer] QGIS in Ubuntu 16.04

2017-03-29 Thread roy roy
I wonder if someone has advice on how to have

QGIS and GRASS GIS installed on Ubuntu, the

QGIS packages with "ubuntugis" dependencies are now broken:

http://hub.qgis.org/issues/16386

"Yesterday, UbuntuGIS got a GDAL 2.1.3 update, so QGIS need to be rebuilt
against that version."

Is it possible for QGIS to be rebuilt with the updated libraries?

I know QGIS is rebuild every month but will it be now?

You guys want to force me to use windows, you have to admit that! :-)

given that I (of course) appreciate the effort of maintainers,

thanks, Roy.

I "discovered" that ubuntu is promoting an universal package manage,

"ubuntu snap", that seems to have some advantages like isolation

and parallel installation of different versions of the program,

could it be interesting for QGIS to have snap packages?

Re: [Qgis-developer] Field Menu Range settings odd behaviour

2017-02-22 Thread roy roy
Hi,

working with Field menu range in QGIS 2.18 I notice that the problem

is still there despite the introduction of costraint:

say that i want to set a range for an integer field
called "numfield" with

min value 1

max value 5

step 1

at this point i would expect that QGIS only accepts "1 2 3 4 5" and
throw an error if i insert 6

to enforce this behaviour I set some costraints:

not NULL

"numfield" >= 1 AND "numfield" <=5

while editing infact if i erroneously insert "6" QGIS will not complain
and will happily save the maximun value for range (i.e. 5) i find this odd
and a way to defeat the hole pourpose of my setting.

What is really happening is that QGIS automatically change the value I insert
with the max range value which is clearly an error that leads to data
corruption;

if someone can confirm i'll open a Bug report.

Thanks, Roy.

Hi Marco,

there is an OGR geoalgorithm that seems to do what you are describing

in QGIS Processing (Dissolve polygons) maybe its easy to adapt it

[Qgis-developer] Field Menu Range settings odd behaviour

2016-11-17 Thread roy roy
Hi,

working with field menu (QGIS 2.14.8 OSGEO4W64) i noted a behaviour that
i find misleading and

could potentially lead to severe errors in edit session:

say that i want to set a range for an integer field with

min value 1

max value 5

step 1

at this point i would expect that QGIS only accepts "1 2 3 4 5" and
throw an error if i insert 6

while editing; infact if i erroneously insert "6" QGIS will not complain
and happily save the

maximun value for range (i.e 5) i find this odd and a way to defeat the
hole pourpose of my

setting.

I think this is a bug, can anyone confirm? If this is the expected
behaviour i think the logic

of this tool is flawed because QGIS should not insert values at his own
will but should instead warn the

user that the value is outside the expected range.

Thanks, Roy.

but not able to set a custom defined scale,
any hint to find some documentation

[Qgis-developer] Set Composer scale with pyqgis

2016-07-07 Thread roy roy
Hi, I'm trying to print a map using pyqgis and an existing template:

# i already loaded a layer and zoomed to the layer:

qgis.utils.iface.zoomToActiveLayer()

# now i need to zoom to a "precise" scale
canvas = qgis.utils.iface.mapCanvas()
canvas.zoomScale(2500) # this works for the canvas not in the composer

# load the template
template_file = file(template_path)
template_content = template_file.read()
template_file.close()
document = QDomDocument()
document.setContent(template_content)
composition = QgsComposition(canvas.mapSettings())
composition.loadFromTemplate(document)
map_item = composition.getComposerItemById('map')
map_item.setMapCanvas(canvas)

# at this point i need to set the extent to fit the layer
map_item.zoomToExtent(canvas.extent()) # this will not be in scale 2500
of course

now i need the scale to be say 2500 but i cannot find how to
set the value

thanks for any help, Roy

[Qgis-developer] Map Composer "dinamic" number of pages based on attribute table

2016-07-03 Thread roy roy
Hi,

I'm trying to understand if it is possible to dinamically set up
the number of pages of the Map Composer, i would like
to create some reports with a map and attribute table/tables
based on query results, of course the resulting table can have
a variable number of items, requiring one or more pages;
so before trying to "reinvent the wheel" i'm looking for some
pyqgis function or method (if it exists) or some suggestion.
I found that "Reportlab" could handle such scenario but is
it possible to achieve something similar using only pyqgis?

Thanks, Roy.

delete some vector files, the layer is deleted with no leftover so

Thanks Nathan,

so I understand that regular layers have to be exposed
(at database level i guess ...) but I think they should not be
listed as virtual layers, it's confusing.
I don't know maybe if it's difficult to hide them, but
*they are not virtual layers*.

[Qgis-developer] Virtual layer vs DBManager issue

I was looking to the new virtual layer function and found
a possible bug:

Load a shapefile (or a spatialite layer or a postgis layer)
make a virtual layer ( select * from layer_name)
browsing layers in DBManager ( table, preview) will
remove layers from the Layer Panel (crearly an unwanted behaviour)
corrupting the project
also QGIS will ultimately hang

Hi, there is in fact GRASS 7.0.3 and 7.0.4 64 bit in OSGeo4W64
i'm indeed using QGIS 2.14.2 with GRASS 7.0.3, there is also
GRASS 7.0.4 but I reverted to GRASS 7.0.3 so that I can use
GRASS Plugin.

So with osgeo4w64, GRASS Plugin works with the current QGIS point
release (2.14.2)
provided that you revert GRASS to 7.0.3, but it does not with nightly
builds.

again I do not know what to do (somehow) ... should i stick with 32 bit ?
is OSGeo4W64 to be consitered unstable/experimental?

thanks, Roy.

Re: [Qgis-developer] GRASS Plugin Delete vector issue in windows

2016-05-19 Thread roy roy
Using osgeo4w64 I installed several packages, there is no GRASS Plugin:

QGIS 2.15 nightly with grass 7.0.4

QGIS 2.14.2 nightly with grass 7.0.4

tried also to revert back to GRASS 7.0.3 but there is no GRASS Plugin;

so for this reason, sadly, i cannot test your patch Radim, i'll do ASAP.

### P.S.

I notice that this "GRASS Plugin not being present" issue

is quite annoying, so i wonder what is the policy of

osgeo4w package update/upgrade? Should we consider the

network installer a developer tool and use the sandalone installer

for QGIS regular use instead?

QGIS and GRASS along with GRASS Plugin have became powerful

tools and I understand that ***a lot*** of work is done by developers to

develop, maintain, package, document and release the software, **a lot
of valuable work(!)**;

sadly IMHO this random behaviour does not give justice to all the good
dev work.

I think a bit of well delivered information should make things better,
something

like the LTS release policy, now we normal users know that we can rely
on it to do

normal work, and we can use regular release to get the newest
functionalities.

Thanks again, Roy.

[Qgis-developer] GRASS Plugin Delete vector issue in windows

2016-04-18 Thread roy roy
Can anyone confirm this issue with GRASS Plugin on:

Windows 64/32bit with QGIS 2.14.1 and Master

GRASS 7.0.3 GRASS Plugin

If you load a vector layer from GRASS DB in QGIS Layers Panel,
then you remove it from the panel, still it is impossible to
delete the vector from GRASS DB using the Browser Panel delete function.

Step to reproduce:

- Load a vector file in a GRASS mapset using "v.in.ogr",
- press "View output" to load the vector in QGIS,
- remove the vector from QGIS Layers Panel
- In the Browser panel right click the vector and choose "delete"

the vector file is not deleted (or partially deleted?) and the geometry is
corrupted
making the file unusable.

also: if you close QGIS and reopen it (before trying to delete the

vector file, the file in deleted without errors.

BTW This does not happens on Linux so it seems specific

to windows NTFS(?)

Thanks, Roy.

Given that using SQL is maybe "harder", and that Mr. Paolo also have a
good point
aiming to ease to use:
i would like just to remind what the very nature of a G.I.S. is,

namely a Database,

usually with an extra column that happens to be a geometry.

I can understand that inexperienced users can be a little confused by
the SQL syntax
but if they want to do some *real work they will have to use QGIS as a
database* so i would think
of a syntax that is closer to SQL than to anything else because sooner
or later they will have to
learn SQL if they want to grow up.

I think that using anything else would in fact add an extra layer of
complexity,
something pointless to learn and that conceals what's going on under the
hood.

just my 2c,
best regards, Roy.

Hi, what i mean is that the "http%..." folder is useful and not to be
removed after install; btw i'm talking about the **OSGeo4Win network
installer** witch defaults the cache dir (http%...) in the position
where it is launched, also the cache dir can be customized if used in
advanced mode.

I totally agree that icons and start menu shortcuts could be handled
more graciously :)

I think the folder contains all necessary data for the installation
and is not created on the desktop but you can choose where you want it,
the installer should not be launched from the desktop but from a regular
file system folder if you like your desktop cleaner;
it is also a very useful folder because you can use it to perform
several OSGEO4W installation in other PC without having to download all
the needed stuff again and again, so not a folder to get rid of IMHO.

Thanks Tom , got it

what i find confusing is

##
# This below does not work

canvas = QgsMapCanvas()

canvas.zoomScale(1)

##
# This below does work
###

canvas = qgis.utils.iface.mapCanvas()

canvas.zoomScale(1)

so there seems to be a difference between
"QgsMapCanvas" and "mapCanvas"

maybe because working into QGIS there already is
an existing QgsMapCanvas(); the map canvas istance
of QGIS itself, called mapCanvas() ?

2016-01-27 Thread m roy
Hi,

i'm trying to learn a bit of "pyqgis" and cannot find how to zoom to
a certain scale,

here what i'm doing so far using QGIS python console:

###

# Set some variables to define the layer

shapefile_path = r'C:\data\shp\area.shp'
legend_layer_name = 'sample_area'
provider_name = 'ogr'

# define the layer to load

layer = QgsVectorLayer(shapefile_path,legend_layer_name,provider_name)

# verify

if not layer.isValid():
 raise IOError, "Failed to open the shapefile"

# load the layer in QGIS

QgsMapLayerRegistry.instance().addMapLayer(layer)

# now i can zoom to active layer i.e.

qgis.utils.iface.zoomToActiveLayer()

# or zoomFull zoomToNext zoomToPrevious

# How to zoom to say 1:1 ?

#####

thanks for any help, Roy

[Qgis-developer] QGIS and GRASS Plugin: How?

2016-01-22 Thread m roy
Hi,

I'd like very much to use QGIS with the awesome new GRASS plugin,
but lately it seems to be harder and harder (at least for me) to achieve
this goal.
What i find really very confusing is what release (on windows) or PPA
(personal package archive
on ubuntu) we are supposed to use to have QGIS working with GRASS.
Now i do not have a fully working QGIS+GRASS system in windows (using
OSGEO4W)
nor in Ubuntu 14.04 because GRASS GIS in ubuntugis-unstable is no more
compatible with QGIS or vice versa...

I think that QGIS and GRASS GIS enormously benefit each other
and really hope someone could give advise on what
package/osegeo/ppa/stable/unstable/installer
to use to simply have QGIS and GRASS run together :-)

thanks, Roy.

I used win 2.12.1 32bit but i had a layer loaded.

It seems to me that you do not have any layer loaded;
if i open a blank project the coordinates seems to stuck at 0 (zero),
afer "iface.mapCanvas().setDestinationCrs(crs)",
(maybe you ned to give some other option to set it properly ?)
do not know if this is a bug but it's weird indeed, it seems to happen
only with a blank project with no layers.

About processing "Import into PostGIS":

It would be nice to have an option to select the schema
for all layers to be imported, maybe populating the schema
values of the "Run as batch process..." dialog using the
"Schema (schema name)" value in the main "Import into PostGIS" dialog;
otherwise you have to manually edit the schema value for every single
layer, not handy.

If with test suite you mean steps to reproduce the crash:

(1) load a multipolygon shapefile

(2) open up geometry checker plugin and set polygon as allowed geometry
types

(3) set "modify input layer"

(4) run the tool

(5) once finished select one of the multipolygon from the table

(6) on Error resolution settings select "Convert to corresponding multi
or single ..." and press OK

(7) click "Fix selected errors using default resolution"

100% crash

[Qgis-developer] GRASS Plugin Split features results in corrupted topology

2015-10-17 Thread m roy
Found this issue testing GRASS plugin in edit mode:

Draw a closed boundary in a GRASS vector layer

add a centroid inside the boundary

now I need to add a node on the boundary
(cannot find how to do that is there a way to
  add a node on a boundary?)

split features seems to do the trick but
the boundary become red (signaling some topology error)

exit editing and save

restart editing and a centroid is displayed where i used the
split feature tool, on the boundary, i was expecting to find
a node instead.

I hope this is clear,

Roy.

[Qgis-developer] About digitizing with GRASS Plugin

2015-10-17 Thread m roy
I ran some test with GRASS Plugin in particular
digitizing some vetor layers. Given that is
quite nice how well it's already integrated with QGIS
edit tools, I found some minor issue, this may be
by design but i'm saharig my thoughts *(IMHO)*, hoping i'll
find some time for further testing.

(1) *Create new GRASS vector layer in QGIS*:
If I understand well we should use the browser panel contestual menu,
i see there are three options ( New point layer, new line, new polygon);
anyway GRASS vector format AFAIK has no such distinction given
that any vector layer can contain any geometry type. This can
be confusing, developing some kind of hybrid between the shapefile
and GRASS own vector format, will also "invalidate" all
existing GRASS documentation about vector editing and GRASS
vector format. We'll need to be overly zealos to explain when
and how things work differently in QGIS otherwise it will be quite
confusing for new users.

(2) *Attribute table editing*:
not able to figure out how it works, i managed
to edit single feature using the "Identify Features"

(3) *Symbology of topo feature while editing*:
Although i think there may be some bugs, I think
it's better to be consistent with GRASS GIS otherwise
see the documentation problem at point (1).

Thanks and best regards, Roy.

I think it's better to stick with GRASS symbology convention,
otherwise it's quite confusing if you use both systems;

e.g. consider the *isle* below

++o++
+  *  +
+  *  +
++o++

+ area on one side (of the boundary) e.g. orange

* area on both sides, e.g. green

  also
there seems to be some problem with the symbology while
in edit mode, some how all boundaries disappear at some
point, but if you exit edit mode and save everything is ok

Thanks, Roy.

Given that i love the QGIS project, and i do not mean to be rude at all:

 From a user perspective

IMHO skipping the next LTR would be a huge mistake, people
find this statement on the QGIS web site:

"Every third release (starting with 2.8) is a long-term-release (LTR)

so accordingly a migration/project planning is done, and then out of the

Also i think someone ( surely I do ) miss very much this functions:

If i understood what bother you is the fact that there are two

me it's ok because i see they have different behaviour (one is fully
automatic).
If this bother you so much you may open a feature request

QGIS crashes when you select "Marker line" in symbol layer type right away,
not only with 'GRASS Edit' style also with default style on a shapefile; so
i think it's not related to GRASS plugin...

boundary to "Marker line";

BTW is it possible to install different versions of QGIS (e.g QGIS-LTR

I think that the QGIS "Add Area" should be renamed to "Add closed boundary"

allow you to add boundary and centroid in one go;

*If you ask*, my opinion is that it's better to remove the regular dir;
those folder are in fact the GRASS database.

A solution could be (if possible) to hide the topo_symbol column
in the attribute table;
or to state on the manual that the user should not try to delete
the topo_symbol column.

How about a " Join "

Hi,
How could I implement something like vlookup in QGIS?

I have a shapefile with 2000 polygons and column 1 of its attribute
table has a code value.

Using the code in this column 1, I need to look up which row of a CSV
file has that code, and return column 2 of the CSV file.
This returned value must then be placed into a new column (say column
6) on the shapefile attribute table.
I could pre-add the new column to this shapefile, and then run the
vlookup equivalent too, of course.

I tried this by opening the DBF file in Libreoffice calc, sorting the
columns, adding the extra two columns of my lookup data, then ran
vlookup and saved/closed the DBF file.

Once back in QGIS the attributes ended up being linked to the wrong
polygons (probably because I sorted the DBF file outside of QGIS).

Thanks in advance,
Zoltan

The article revives Steve Ballmers “Linux is a cancer” mantra it talks

As Lewis' opinions are regarded highly by the LiDAR and photogrammetry
