Re: [QGIS-Developer] Cancellation: QGIS Developer meeting and conference Nødebo

2020-03-31 Thread Raymond Nijssen

Hey Luigi,

At first I wouldn't even think about this! But maybe it makes sense, if
the virus has disappeared by then. Dutch weather in August is also
slightly better than in March by the way. :)

We would not be able to work in the Red Cross building, so we would need
to find another location. Also a location with some outdoor space would
be nice in summer.

Let's wait and see how the corona measures evolve. We could also go for
autumn or even later.

Kind regards,

Raymond

Also, please consider that using special characters in the release name, if
not handled properly, could lead to bugs as for București
(https://github.com/qgis/QGIS/issues/35453)

or that a different style in numbering releases will change the user-agent
string (now like "QGIS/31003") and could affect the version check mechanism
(https://github.com/qgis/QGIS/issues/34685#issuecomment-605712536)

I'd caution against this. Just like if we named a release "QGIS 3.16
Jesus Christ" or "QGIS 3.18 L Ron Hubbard" or "QGIS 4.0 - Santa
Claus", this naming would raise difficult cultural issues which are
easier to just avoid.

I think we could come up with a name with a similar intention/message
whilst avoiding the tricky spiritual contentions this particular one
raises.

Things I noticed from the above slide:

1. I still had lots of hair :-)
2. The carrying capacity of a small staircase in 2009 was equal to a major part
of the QGIS developer community
3. We called hackfests “hackfests” and the world did not end

Also, further back in time, Marco Hugentobler, Jens Oberender and his pal (name
since forgotten) and I met up in Karlsruhe for the first unofficial QGIS
hackfest in 2004 [1]. That was the first time that any QGIS developers met each
other in person I believe.

Another nice name candidate would be Anchorage in honour of our project founder
who doesn’t get nearly enough credit other than an early splash screen
containing a picture of his dog, Bandit (which would be a cool release name if
it didn’t break our naming convention :-P).

Re: [QGIS-Developer] Cancellation: QGIS Developer meeting and conference Nødebo

2020-03-30 Thread Andreas Neumann

Hi,

QGIS 2.16 was already called "Nødebo".

We need to come up with something else. "Pi" would be a good one.

Or some sensible name with a reference to the COVID-19 pandemic, in
honor of all the people who suffered a lot from it - but that might be a
negative connotation. But basically the whole world suffered from it in
one way or the other.

Or we could pick the village/city of some core QGIS developer,
preferably from a remote place where we haven't had a meeting yet - e.g.
Alex' place in Ukraine?

Greetings,

Andreas

cancelled, all that passion and volunteering still happened). -jeff
