hm, are you referring to Robert's icon theme? Well this is really
personal taste, and I would hesitate to use "ugly" in this regard
(even my vocabulary is also limited). Feel free to design your icon
set which will be less "ugly" for you. Good luck! Probably I am not
used from the GRASS community to read such strong words.

Re: [Qgis-developer] [Qgis-user] Cast your vote: Default icon theme for QGIS 2.0

2012-07-10 Thread Daniel Lee
Hi there,

I also think the GRASS theme is great, although I have to say that I'm a
long-time GRASS user. I've often heard complaints about QGIS' icon set,
especially in Windows - people feel that it looks a bit unserious, although
I don't see it that way. However, I do see great advantages in
consolidating the use of FOSS GIS to these to main overarching packages -
it's great to have lots of products but we're a specialized, rather small
community and it's good when people don't invest their time in reinventing
the wheel. In that sense, I would support style unification across QGIS and
GRASS - it would make it easier to jump back and forth and perhaps
encourage the use of the GRASS plugin more.

Best,
Daniel

Hi!

Well I won't say "ugly" in any way - even if I would not like them.
I guess Yves would not have taken such a word but he explained it that
his vocabulary is limited.

Of course it is personal preference for everyone - surely. But as
Robert tries to unify the icons for all GIS I am strongly in favour of
using it in QGIS as default too. Most Users even don't know that there
are other icon sets available.
Why not taking the advantage of giving the user the same icon for the
same function in all Open Source GIS?
I think after a short while of complaining (not finding the new
function (althoug it is still at the same place), looking bad .. and
such things) people will find out what benefit that would bring to
(for now) GRASS and QGIS ..

But as there is already a poll going on .. just vote .. and express
your meaning ..

I think the set being under OSGEO wings is a very good motivation
to switch over. http://wiki.osgeo.org/wiki/OSGeo_Graphics

Hey, there's also a trac instance, to file issues !

For example, I find the "zoom-refresh" button weird in that I don't see
how "refresh" has to do with "zoom". Is it only me ? Worth filing a
ticket for that ?

2012-07-10 Thread Micha Silver

A question regarding the plans for the QGIS icon theme and the GRASS
plugin.

Currently GRASS (standalone) uses Robert's icons, but the QGIS
plugin with the default theme uses other icons. That already could
be a small bit of confusion. But when I switch QGIS to the new GIS
theme, then some of the icons appear duplicated: Add Vector in QGIS
and Add GRASS vector use the same icon. Another possible source of
confusion.

I'm not sure what I'd suggest to make everything work uniformly. It
would be ideal if the GRASS application icons were identical to the
GRASS plugin icons, but *different* from the generic QGIS "Add
Vector" and "Add raster".

What about "Add vector" is a single icon and which kind of vector is choosen
in a second dialog ? Could be shapefile, postgis, spatialite, grass,

Good idea. But that's more than just a change in icon theme... It
means moving some of the GRASS plugin functionality to the qgis
core.

What if the add layer buttons were unified - one button that would then
give you the option of adding a shapefile, database table, directory, GRASS
map, etc.? That could consolidate and eliminate a lot of the confusion.

Indeed this is the long term goal - though it is going to take quite a
bit of work and nobody has yet volunteered to do it. Nathan has made
some nice mockups of how this would work based on discussions we had
at the Lyon hackfest.

This is his original post -

there are more recent mockups but I can't locate them at the moment.
