Re: [Qgis-user] Unable to load project

The Windows version of Qgis allows you to run multiple versions on your
computer side by side. I personally haven't used the Windows version for
several years so I can't be sure if you will have any issues running 3.0
alongside your current version. I run many of the editions I have in
virtual machines. If your PC has 8 GB or more of memory, or if you have
access to another computer that can run Linux, then you can try it out
in a Linux virtual machine or physical computer environment without
disturbing your current installation.

I can load an older project file and then add newer layers to it and
reconfigure them, Etc. This is very tedious but will amount to a
recovery. It is better than starting from scratch for sure. But will
the same problem reoccur?

I have contemplated migrating to version 3 but I'm always leery of
upgrades of anything as they often bring problems with them. In this
list I notice many references to installation issues and things not
running. 2.10 is a devil I know.

Hi David,

I’am an archaeologist working in Québec. If you vectorized the map in a local
CRS, all you need to do is do a « save as » and change the CRS (coordinate
reference system) that is in Longitude Latitude. If your map is not
georefenrenced (that is, you just scanned the map and did not use a CRS, that
is more complicated but not impossible. I usually fixe that do in a CAD but I
am sure you can do it in QGIS. We could talk if you want and I could help you
out figured the next steps and steps to avoid this problem (like georefereing
the raster map before you start) .Send me an email directly.

You could look at this also.

[Qgis-user] Many GRASS tools in Processing are unusable (QGIS 3.0.3 on Mac OS X 10.12.6)

2018-06-07 Per discussione Garth Fletcher

Many of the processing tools in GRASS, which worked with QGIS 2.18.15,
are unusable in QGIS 3.0.3 under Mac OS X 10.12.6.

They fail with an "ERROR: Path '//' doesn't exist"
message.

I reported this a week ago in report #19073, but thought a reminder
here might help.

QGIS is a wonderful program and I'm looking forward to being able to
use 3.0.x.

Cordially,

[Qgis-user] Converting X Y Coordinates to Latitude/Longitude

2018-06-07 Per discussione David Hochfelder
Hi All,

I am new to QGIS, so this may be a newbie question easily answered by the
more experienced.

I'm working on a historical GIS project to remap an area of Albany, NY
demolished for urban renewal in 1962. I've succeeded in vectorizing a
historic map of the area (~1960), but the coordinates are not in lat/long
form. I see that there are plugins for converting tables of specific
coordinates, but I want to convert the entire map continuously.

This area no longer exists--all the buildings and streets were cleared for
the Empire State Plaza state capitol complex.

My end goal is to use the rectified map as a way to geotag historic
photographs of particular buildings.

Is there a way to convert the coordinates in a continuous fashion for the
entire region?

Thanks for your help.

Re: [Qgis-user] Coordinate Conversion

2018-06-07 Per discussione Nicolas Cadieux
Hi,

I am not sure about v.transforme but GDA94 is handled in QGIS. I imagine that
this is not the case with the local projection and that you are trying to find
the transformation? Usually, my way to deal with this is to contact the local
governments. They normally have software to convert local grids when these are
not widely used. If you have the epgs code, you could download the grid
parameters and create a custom projection using the proj4 parameters.

Shape files, WMS, Raster, Vector? Unknown Exception I suspect is hard to

referring to the dxf file. Hard to say if anything was wrong there, nothing
obvious. At least to me. Some other research I did indicates that maybe
there is an authentication problem, not sure just what that boils down to.

I don't think the dxf file is the problem. I renamed it and bypassed it on
the startup routine which the program accepted but it still seized up with
a spinning cursor. Some things still function, such as modifying the
properties of a layer , Etc. But the screen is blank and nothing can be
saved.

For some time I have noticed that loading a project file bogs down for a
while and then would resume to completion. Now it bogs down and blows up.
The key message seems to be unknown exception.

Some older project files do load successfully however...
