[Qgis-user] Mean distance between points

2022-04-21 Per discussione Chavoux Luyt via Qgis-user
Hi everyone,

I am pretty sure that this is something that is used regularly, but I could
not figure out how to do it. Basically we have a bunch of camera points
(vector point data layer) and want to calculate the mean distance between
the points (as well as the minimum and maximum distance between
neighbouring points). Is there a specific tool or plugin that can do this
automatically? Obviously I could use the measure line tool and do it
manually as a last resort, but I would prefer not.

Cheers,

I would suggest using CyberTracker <https://www.cybertracker.org/> for this
job. There might be other applications doing the same thing, but the nice
thing about CyberTracker is that you can set it up to record exactly the
information you want to record (e.g. computer name or IP address or take
picture) and afterwards import the data from all the different GPS devices
to a single file/database which can be exported to a .shp file (basic
vector file format used by QGIS).

QGIS can do all of this. You can either have that information (country,
state, suburb and postal code) in CyberTracker and record it when you take
the GPS point, or afterwards add it to the attribute file (.dbf) of your
shape file (it can also be stored in a PostgreSQL (PostGIS) database from
QGIS, although I have never used this and don't know how easy it is to set
up).

Yes, by editing and adding new columns to the attribute table of your shape

You can select on any column the values you want and zoom to selected
values in QGIS.

I found in my data that using an area-conserving projection (e.g. Albers
Equal Area) vs. a shape, direction or distance preserving projection (e.g.
UTM) made a significant difference in calculated areas (e.g. home range
sizes). It is often important to use the correct projection for the
question you want to answer, something that caught me a little bit by
surprise. Also look at the units of the projection you use... I am not sure
how much recent versions of QGIS have changed in this regard, but it could
be giving you the area in "square degrees" or "square meters" when you are
expecting "square km" or "hectares".

[Qgis-user] Picture data in Map?

2020-11-17 Per discussione Chavoux Luyt
Hi guys,

Is there an easy way to get image data into/linked into a map in qGIS (i.e.
a plugin or something)? I have CyberTracker data with pictures taken of
footprints etc. as recorded in the veld, but when I export it to a .shp
file, the associated picture is no longer in the .dbf (neither is there a
link to it). What I really want is to have a map where when I click on a
specific point, the associated picture would pop up and show on-screen
(together with the text data, like species and behaviour associated with
that point).

Would I need to use BLOB's (or BYTEA) in PostGIS for this functionality?
Has nobody done something similar before?

Any advice appreciated!

Yes, it is if you have multiple users. Preventing these kinds of issues is
exactly why databases exist.

PostgreSQL comes with PostGIS as a standard add-in. For GIS work you will
need PostGIS. I would say the primary reason for using PostgreSQL/PostGIS
_is_ for multi-user read/edits and stability. I must confess that as a
single computer single user I have never set up PostGIS or converted an
existing project to PostGIS, so I don't know how difficult the process is
(although from the help files it seems pretty straightforward), but I am
sure there are many others on this mailing list who can help if you get
stuck.

Re: [Qgis-user] GeoPackage deadlocks

2019-10-18 Per discussione Chavoux Luyt
Hi,

Just my two cents... this is IMHO exactly where postGIS will shine. Using
PostgreSQL as backend will avoid any of these issues (i.e. prevent data
corruption). For my personal projects I have never bothered with it, so I
cannot say how easy it is to set up, but once it is up and running
PostgreSQL is one of the most reliable database servers out there.

[Qgis-user] Problem with GEarthView plugin

2018-09-14 Per discussione Chavoux Luyt
Hi everyone,

The GEarthView plugin used to work, so I don't know what went wrong. I am
running QGIS 2.18.11 on Debian stable (Stretch) (libpython 2.7.13-2+deb9u2,
python-qgis 1:2.18.11+14stretch, libqt5core5a 5.9.1+dfsg-9).

It gives me the following error message:

The plugin is broken. Python said:
'module' object has no attribute 'in_'

Any advice? What could have changed to stop it from working? How do I fix
it?

[Qgis-user] GRASS GRASS plugin

2012-07-01 Per discussione Chavoux Luyt
Hi guys

I know this is probably in a tutorial somewhere, so in that case if you can
just give the link I will appreciate it. :-)
I have two questions on GRASS and the GRASS plugin. (BTW, I had downgrade
my GRASS installation to get it to work with the latest qGIS on Debian
Squeeze - is this a bug?).
1. Is there a way to simply import all the open (qGIS) layers (geotiff
raster shape vector) into the current GRASS region without duplicating
them or will I need to copy them to the right GRASS directory? (currently a
subdirectory in my qGIS project directory). I created a GRASS region that
is basically the same as the current visible area of my qGIS project.
2. Do I have access to all the GRASS command via the GRASS plugin, or will
I have to open GRASS itself for detailed analysis?

Thanks in advance

[Qgis-user] qGIS 1.8 Vector Points in Polygon function?

2012-06-28 Per discussione Chavoux Luyt
Hi guys

I recently upgraded qGIS to version 1.8 in order to run the points in
polygon analysis (see e.g.
http://qgis.spatialthoughts.com/2012/02/tutorial-spatial-analysis-points-in.html).
I used to have qGIS 1.7.0 installed which did not have this function
in
my installation (on Mepis 11 : Debian squeeze based). But I cannot find it
in the new version of qGIS either? What do I need to do for this kind of
analysis? (I want to use a text value of the polygon to update a text
column in all the points within that polygon). Or should I just use GRASS
for this kind of analysis? (Both are points and polygon are .shp files).
(On this I have another question... but that is a separate issue).

[Qgis-user] GRASS plugin

2012-06-28 Per discussione Chavoux Luyt
Hi guys

Running Debian Squeeze (Mepis 11), I have installed qGIS 1.8 . I also have
GRASS 6.4.2-1 installed. However, I cannot install qgis-plugin-grass (any
version), because it is dependent on GRASS 6.4.0 . Is there any way to get
the plugin working with the newer version of GRASS? Is it useful to have
this plugin at all, or should I just import the .shp files into GRASS and
do everything from there? I used GRASS a long time ago and remember that it
was quite a steep learning curve, but very powerful once I knew how
everything fit together.

Thanks again
