Hi, Your data is your data! It will be safe if you keep it safe. If you have any concerns regarding the safety of QGIS, send a mail to the NRCAN Canadian mapping service in Sherbrooke Quebec. They use QGIS and other products. Between you and me, I would stick with QGIS as ArcGIS could lock you into proprietary file formats. I would say ArcGIS is the best alternative to QGIS! [Qgis-user] Updating models on the QGIS site
Hi, I have a 3 models that have been improved (Fix Directional Network, Check Geometries, model 1 of 3.) and fixed. I presented today at the QGIS OpenDay. I had to remove the "Snap to anchor nodes (single layer only)" as it was creating invalid geometries in QGIS 3.28.2-Firenze on Windows 11. I am not sure exactly how to upload the new models? I see the upload button but I am wondering what will happen to the old ones? Will they be removed by someone managing the site? Can we have multiple versions of the model as I am using the new repair geometry tools unavailable before 3.28? Is it possible to modify a models' description myself or must I send and email somewhere? I did send a copy of this email to the developer email list but I don’t have any answers yet. Re: [Qgis-user] Polygons
Hi, It would help if you told us what format your data is in. If it’s rasters, you can start by georeferencing the file and then do a raster to polygon transformation (vectorize). I think there are some other tools that you can use to accelerate tracing. You will also find plugins https://plugins.qgis.org/plugins/raster_tracer/ Nothing will be easy though, you will still need to verify and carefully look at the data. Re: [Qgis-user] Two LAZ file possible issues iwth some new data we received to processs
Hi, I did run into this layer number limite in the past. If you check the user list or if you Google “QGIS, maximum amount of layers… “ you will find multiple post. The issue, at the time was caused by limites in the OS. (Windows 7 at the time), OSX had and easy work around. Same thing for the various flavours of Linux. At the time, I either combined files when using QGIS or opened them in Saga that did not have this problem. I believe this was because Saga, at least back then, loaded all the file into memory and did not keep a handle on the files once is was open. This is the type of thing that got me into learning Python so that I could create loops and speed up operations on LiDAR data. It’s normal (or at least expected) for large batches of file to have bugs in them like missing crs in headers. File transfers can be difficult to handle. Talk with the provider to see if they have the same issue. If you know a bit of Python, I could send you a script that reads the LiDAR header directly. LasPy is a good little library for this https://laspy.readthedocs.io/en/latest/intro.html#header You could find tools in WhiteboxTools also. [Qgis-user] Using qgis with a 4k screen and a HD screen.
Hi, Seems like QGIS adjusts the GUI settings based on my 4K high resolution screen. When I move the windows over to the HD 1080 screen, Icon size and font size needs to be adjusted in the settings but the processing toolbars and layer Styling toolbars remain chunky. I notice they seem to take into consideration the scaling of the main screen even if QGIS starts on the secondary HD screen. Is there a GUI setting that could help and that I am missing? Is there any way I can make these changes on the fly when QGIS is moved from one screen to the other? Re: [Qgis-user] LIDAR
Hi, On regular raster and vector layers, you can also right click on the layer in the layer manager and cut and paste the style. I figure it must be the same with LiDAR. CloudCompare is also very good for working with LiDAR. I have been working with files with over 250 millions points lately with no trouble. Same thing in QGIS. So far so good! Re: [Qgis-user] QGIS and historical battle
Hi, You cannot do simulations like video games with QGIS but yes, you can map all your data, do viewshed analyses to see what you can see from where, figure out distances and area of potential battle field…. Eliminate battle grounds based on thing like slope angles. Like others have said, make sure you have the proper archaeological permits before you begin or else you may very well destroy what you are trying to save. If you give us more information, we could point you the right direction for the data. I imagine others have had the same idea! I would be nice to map out that data too to try and figure out various locations. If you don’t have a DEM, or LiDAR data (this would be ideal), then I suggest the NASADEM. Police video of crowd sizes during demonstration, or parade data like what is done in France or in Russia on celebrations days could be a good place to start to figure out how many people fit in a certain area. This would be a minimum bounding box I guess as the exact combat methods would need to be studied. Re: [Qgis-user] GeoTiff losing CRS
Hi, It would help is you explained what exact algorithm you are using to process the images. Some plugins may not add the CRS to the file while some will not. Data type and compression will have no effect as expected, unless you are dealing with a bug. If you keep on having the problems, just open the file, specify the CRS and save it with a new name. This way, the CRS will be embedded it the tiff header. Why are you creating a virtual image in the first place? Are you trying to stitch multiple files together before doing the pansharpening? IMHO, Results should be better if you go at it one scene at a time and then stitch the results later, unless you have no overlapping scenes… Nicolas Cadieux https://gitlab.com/njacadieux > Le 31 déc. 2022 à 16:35, Grant Boxer via QGIS-User > a écrit : > > > Happy New Year to all! > > I have been processing satellite imagery and producing pansharpened images. Re: [Qgis-user] Rendering of Back Ground Image in Map Output
Hi, Assuming we are following Google term of use https://www.google.com/intl/en-GB_ALL/permissions/geoguidelines/ , the easiest way out of this problem is to bypass the Google server when printing as it will effectively limit the number of pixels it feeds you. What I did, in the past was to zoom in, and export the project as an image, pan and then start over again. These .tiff files will be georeferenced. I would then load these file into the project and use those as the background. Hi, I think geoda should be able to help you with some parts of this. https://geodacenter.github.io/download.html. This software will cluster points in various group size but will use euclidien distances. If you are interested in the distances along the network, then the idea would be to build a distance matrix based on the network distances (like an all paires Djikstra) https://www.mdpi.com/2306-5729/5/1/8 and then to use that matrix to create groups based on the n neighbor analysis. Re: [Qgis-user] DXF layer locking
Btw, if I recall properly, drag and drop would open a dxf in read and write mode. I think that if you open the dxf using the project import, the file will be read and copied to a geopackage. The dxf file is probably closed after the import and the layer style from AutoCAD is respected. You would need to test to see if this is still the case. Hi, Whatever you do, keep in mind that the lock is there for a reason. Basically it’s there to protect the file from corruption in the case where two people or two programs are trying to read and write to the same file. If the file is not designed with this in mind or not being managed by a server, you risk loosing or destroying your data. Dxf is definitely not build with this in mind. Re: [Qgis-user] QGIS not reading data in all layers
Hi, I have not seen this error before. I would create a new user profile to test (never hurts). My gut feeling is that your files are possibly corrupted. Can you read the file with another computer. I would scan the disk for possible errors (check disk on Windows). Re: [Qgis-user] multiple csv file import
Hi, Yes, you can do that very easily using QGIS. Layer/add layer/add delimited text layer. Then just export the layer in the format of your choice. You may need to convert the coordinates in decimal degrees (ex 75 05 30.4 -> 75.0917800 ). You can do this in Excel using =(A6)+(B6/60)+(C6/3600)+(D6/3600) A= Deg, B= Min, C=Sec, D= Decimal Sec. Then export to csv. Re: [Qgis-user] project browser very, very slow
Hi, I would start by creating a new user profile the. Restart QGIS using that profile. Then, I would look at the network server. Look at the latency to access this server? What is the speed for the data transfers? Try copying the file locally and test for speed. Then, wms services could be very slow. I would remove those from the projects and test. Hi, It would be nice to have this QGIS. My first reaction is to use line offset but the end result is not predictable. You may need to work with Python to do this. You could also probably create a model. If you need to identify the overlapping segments, you can use my Fix Directional Network model 1 to 3. You can download this on the plugin page. https://plugins.qgis.org/models/?order_by=-upload_date&_gallery=true The first model will check the Geometries. Test with all default values. After running this model, run the second model. It should identify all partially overlapping lines. This layer will be called "Potential Problem || Overlapping lines." You can open the second model and look at the "Find overlapping lines" algorithm to see how it's done. It should find any overlapping or partially overlapping lines. Re: [Qgis-user] Opening a layout in "Zoom full" view
Hi, Just tested on 3.26.3 on a brand new install (Windows 11 and all). I confirm that this is a problem. I would do a bug report. This should not be an option. Layout opens at 5.7% even when saved at 100%. Nicolas Le 2022-11-02 à 4:42 p.m., Tony Shepherd (FarmMaps NZ) a écrit : Hi Nicolas Yes, I too had those issues with MapInfo and AutoCAD in a previous life. This is a stock standard QGIS layout, just a normal A4 and A3 layout, both either portrait or landscape. Any saved project, or any new project. Add a layout or two that contain the normal layout elements (map window(s), scale bars, free text, attribute table etc). All elements are within the “page”. Close everything, open that saved project file, open the layout or layouts, and the first view you get of that layout is a small view (say 20% or so). Then press the View Extents button and then it zooms to the extent as expected. So that tells me if there was an element placed in a strange place within the layout then zooming to the extents would then make that rogue element obvious, so in my case, I am sure that is not the reason. I think it would be a good feature that when saving a project, the layout will open at the same view scale as when the project was saved, or perhaps have a flag that allows you to set a default layout zoom scale. It seems to me that in V3.26, when using any project file old or new, the layouts seem to open at a much smaller zoom scale than previous version. Re: [Qgis-user] QGIS_process not mutli-threaded? or option?
Hi, I’am not part of any QGIS developers team so take what I say with a grain of salt. QGIS, when doing nothing, is probably not much multithreaded. If you start rendering stuff, then, multithreading will, by default, kick in. You can turn off that option or control the number of cores used in the default setting. You can also activate openCL. That should accelerate certain algorithms but I don’t know which. It would be nice to have a list if one exists. Cuda, probably because it is proprietary and hardware limited, will probably not be implemented unless someone makes a plugin that uses it. Re: [Qgis-user] large DEM not loading tiles correctly
Hi, The asc format is very inefficient and bad for this. I would save those as uncompressed tiff. One way is to make a virtual raster and then save the result as a tiff. If the data is too big building a pyramid can speed thing up. Keep in mind windows does have a limite to hoe many layers (files) can be opened at a time. You can save a very big virtual raster as multiple bigger tiles also. Learning some basic Gdal command line and or python can help you al long way for this type of project, specially if you need to convert thousands of tile. If you need help with this, contact me. Of course, server and database people will also have their solutions for this problem… it depends on what you what to do with the data. Re: [Qgis-user] Problems with raster layer in geopackage
Hi, Look's like the layer manager in QGIS has got files names, layer names and aliases all mixed up for rasters in gpkg. When renaming the raster in the layer manager, one only changes the layer alias so the original file name and layer name remain the unchanged, thus, you can't copy the raster over itself as only file name and layer names are used. I guess you can only delete the raster using the database tool as opening it in the file browser will automatically lock the file for reading, which makes sense. This looks like a good bug report... Nicolas On 2022-09-23 11:54 p.m., David Strip wrote: On 9/23/2022 9:59 AM, Nicolas Cadieux wrote: Am afraid to notice we have not solve your initial issue about naming the rasters… :( When you look at the geopackage with the database tool, is the layer with the raster identified with the correct name? What happens to the raster name if you save 2 rasters in the geopackage? This could be an issue with the naming conventions of the layer manager instead of an issue with the file format… When I look at the gpkg with DB Browser for SQLite, the table associated with the raster layer has the correct name, but when I open the gpkg in the Qgis browser, it has the same name as the gpkg. What's odder is that I then added that raster to a different gpkg (one that I created for the testing in the last email), and it keeps the name, which is to say the name of the gpkg. I added that raster to a blank map and renamed it. I then dragged it into the test gpkg, and now it has the new name. So now I try to copy the renamed layer into the original gpkg where is has the wrong name and get an error that I can't copy the raster over itself (I used the original name). Even with a different name I can't add it to the gpkg, as it appears to be recognized as the original file. After backing up the gpkg, I thought I'd delete the misnamed file and restore it from the project I added it to. But you can't delete a raster from a gpkg if it's open in a project. I'm baffled. -- Nicolas Cadieux https://gitlab.com/njacadieux ___ Qgis-user mailing list Qgis-user@lists.osgeo.org List info: https://lists.osgeo.org/mailman/listinfo/qgis-user Unsubscribe: https://lists.osgeo.org/mailman/listinfo/qgis-user

Hi, There is a distinct possibility that the 5GB shape file is corrupt or that it will be if you manipulate it. It’s too big for the normal shape file format. I would first save it as a geopackage then stat looking at why the file is so big. Unless shapes can be simplified without loosing resolution (keep a back up always), you might have to split the file using a field to make multiple files (example splitting a lake file by state). You may look at the data types. Perhaps they can be simplified (ex int16 vs float64 for a filed that has no decimal values… Try compressing the resulting file. Re: [Qgis-user] reduce resolution of an image in qgis
Hi, Others are responding to your question with methods and tools. I will just state that your question is absolutely valid and is not often looked at carefully by researchers. The question is “how do I resample my data and conserve the best possible integrity of this data?” That will depend on the data, the methods available to you, the technical obstacles (like processing time) and the questions you are asking. Whatever method you use, you better be ready to justify and explain your choices. Do some test data, explore what happens to the data. What is the edge effect…. In statistics, the best choice is often dictated by matching a statistical method that behaves like the thing you are trying to studying. Wise question. Yoda would be proud! In the past, I have used simple 3D WKT format in a text file to make 3D outlines of trenches and survey holes. Looks like some plugins can now do that for you now. QGIS is not quite there as a full blown CAD but it’s as good as current Commercial GIS I have worked with. Progress has been slow but steady. Re: [Qgis-user] most efficient way to digitize polygons
Hi, Depending on what you are doing and what kind of results you are looking for, could you simply use "Polygonize" and then clean those results. If your map are in RGB only, you could do a raster classification analysis before hand. Line would follow pixels at first but those could be fixed using various vector tools. Just a thought! Re: [Qgis-user] digitizing
Hi, Look's like there's a problem with the georeferenced layer or perhaps the CRS or the coordinates of the base map. The first thing would be to look at the layer CRS to see if it's good. Then, right click on that layer in the layer panel, go to Layer CRS and then select "Set Project CRS from layer.", then zoom to the layer. I would look at the coordinates to see if they are valid. Then, I would open the base map and check the same things. I would also try to use a web mapping service site google earth to see if you base map is in the right place. Perhaps the base map CRS is problematic. That would be my starting point for trouble shooting. Re: [Qgis-user] The Split Features tool is not working...
Hi, I guess default is to split the shapes into multipart objects. You can then used the multi part to single parts tools. That will split the geometries and create new lines in the database. Always check for topology errors before and after using such tools. The “Fix geometry” tool is good for this sort of thing if you find errors. Re: [Qgis-user] How to make joined fields editable?
Hi, I am unsure of what is happening here. I don’t use postgis tables and I normally use csv as join table (therefore not editable from the start). You can however save the 2 joined table as a gpkg under a new name. Just use the export dialogue and both will be saved. This will make a new editable file if you use an editable format as an export file format and will get you out of this bind. Re: [Qgis-user] New objectid numbers after using DIFFERENCE
Hi, If you are using a geopackage, you are probably getting a message that the file cannot be saved as geopackage requires a unique id field. You can open the field calculator and update the field using $id for the unique ID field. If you delete this unique ID field, it will be recreated correctly if you delete the field and save the file (if you save in a geopackage file format). (I guess this also has the potential to corrupt the file so this would be a last chance option). You can also use the autoincremental field function found in processing if you don't have a unique id field. Re: [Qgis-user] help with shortest-path/network analysis (multiple origins to multiple destinations)
Hi, I think the best way is too install Python with Anaconda. Then, you will need to install geopandas, networkX and possibly pandas and shapely libraries. I am not sure it it's a good idea to add these in the Qgis Python distribution. My algorithm currently uses 1 line input file and 1 point input file. It would need to be modified to work with 2 point input files. Re: [Qgis-user] Write vector attribute table from pandas dataframe
Hi Ming, The best thing would be to show your code and ask others how it can be optimized. I find that https://gis.stackexchange.com/ is the best place to do this but this user list definitely has some very competent programmers. Not being one of those competent programmers, I will just state that pandas and geopandas use a process called vectorization where the “for loop” is done for you. https://medium.com/analytics-vidhya/understanding-vectorization-in-numpy-and-pandas-188b6ebc5398 This means that looping over elements in a dataframe can be MUCH slower than using vectorization. So basically, you need to figure out the right code and avoid “for loops“ when using dataframes. Hope this helps Nicolas Cadieux https://gitlab.com/njacadieux > Le 22 avr. 2022 à 11:50, ming han via Qgis-user a > écrit : > > > Hi everyone > > Is there an efficient way to copy data in a pandas dataframe to the > vector attribute table? > > I am looping element by element, which is very slow. > > Thanks > Ming > ___ > Qgis-user mailing list > Qgis-user@lists.osgeo.org > List info: https://lists.osgeo.org/mailman/listinfo/qgis-user > Unsubscribe: https://lists.osgeo.org/mailman/listinfo/qgis-user ___ Qgis-user mailing list Qgis-user@lists.osgeo.org List info: https://lists.osgeo.org/mailman/listinfo/qgis-user Unsubscribe: https://lists.osgeo.org/mailman/listinfo/qgis-user

Re: [Qgis-user] Help with scales in print layouts for geographic CRS
Hi Nyall, That would be a "nice to have"! Nicolas On 2022-04-06 9:13 p.m., Nyall Dawson via Qgis-user wrote: On Thu, 7 Apr 2022 at 10:26, Greg Troxel wrote: Nyall Dawson writes: In all cases (projected OR geographic) the scalebar logic is: 1. Create a horizontal line across the width of the layout map 2. Calculate the length of that line using great circle/ellipsoidal calculations, based on the project's ellipsoid settings. 3. Compare the length of the ellipsoidal line vs the map width to calculate the corresponding scale That is a very straightforward approach with easy-to-understand semantics. So qgis scalebar calculations are ALWAYS based on great circle/ellipsoidal lengths*. And more precisely, a true geodesic between two points varying in x and with constant y in the layout CRS. For north-up (at least ish) projections, that means a line of constant latitude. For a lat/lon CRS in the layout, at mid latitudes, it's going to mean that the scale in the y axis is smaller by about 110km/70km; a square in lat/lon is taller than it is wide (and plus it's not a square, but that's less obvious). Equivalently, a square on the ground has a larger difference in longitude than it does in latitude. Or maybe I have that backward, but using lat/lon in a layout does not preserve shapes. This is what I was trying to get at: a single concept of scale is really only valid for a projection that has the same scale in x and y. Which I think is true iff the projection is conformal. And it's only truly valid if the scale doesn't change over the layout, which is probably ~never exactly true, but many projections aim to have it remain close enough to be treated as constant (e.g. UTM). Which is a long way of getting around to "if you are using lat/lon as the axes in your layout, either you are doing something odd on purpose or you probably should rethink your approach." If you really do mean it, I would find the explanation of why interesting. All correct, indeed! I've been thinking about introducing a new warning when exporting layouts, which would look something like this: 1. For each scale bar, look at the referenced map 2. Measure the scale using multiple lines, each across the top/middle/bottom horizontally and left/center/right vertically 3. Compare these scale values, and if any differ by more than XXX % then show a warning to the user. Something like "The scale for map 1 varies from 1: to 1:y across different parts of the map. Consider using an alternative form of representing the map scale (such as a grid overlay), as the scale bar may be misleading for this map." What do you think? Nyall * Unless the project itself is set to not use ellipsoidal calculations and only use planar calculations, in the project properties dialog Presumably those calculations are in the project CRS's xy space, and would typically (when used sensibly) be grid distance in UTM, some State Plane Coordinate System, or similar. ___ Qgis-user mailing list Qgis-user@lists.osgeo.org List info: https://lists.osgeo.org/mailman/listinfo/qgis-user Unsubscribe: https://lists.osgeo.org/mailman/listinfo/qgis-user -- Nicolas Cadieux https://gitlab.com/njacadieux ___ Qgis-user mailing list Qgis-user@lists.osgeo.org List info: https://lists.osgeo.org/mailman/listinfo/qgis-user Unsubscribe: https://lists.osgeo.org/mailman/listinfo/qgis-user

Re: [Qgis-user] Help with scales in print layouts for geographic CRS
Hi, Great question! I am not the best person to answer it as this is a question for the Proj4 project people. They do geodesy and generally, a conversation with them bring me back to my worse math class experiences! I should have listened, I say to myself! Anyways, CRS are not all created the same. If you read the link below, you will see that a CRS can minimize distorsion for the area, distance, shape, direction and bearing but not all of them at once. Google for the projected coordinates system you used. You may find what quality it aims to minimize distortion. If not, Google for the type of projection it’s based on (conformal, equal-area…) https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Map_projection As others have pointed, a degree of longitude does not measure the same length as a degree of latitude. I would expect scales to reflect latitude distances for the latitude of your map. If this is not the case, then they are possibly using a short cut and using a latitude distance at the equator. This would be a good question for the developers. Whatever test you do, make sure your polygon in the projected CRS does measure the correct 1000x1000m or 1500x1500m in length. The easiest way to do this is to draw the rectangle using advanced digitizing modes is a local UTM zone. You can also use a WKT polygon you created in a csv file. (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Well-known_text_representation_of_geometry) Then, « densify » (processing tools box) the rectangle to add tons of nodes to the lines. ( A rectangle with only 4 corner nodes cannot be accurately reprojected on a sphere.) Then, reproject the layer to a projected CRS you want to test. Make sure all the layers are in the same crs as the project, same thing for the map space. You need to make sure QGIS does not do any reprojection on the fly without you knowing it. Re: [Qgis-user] Problem trying to graduate by value (colum)
Hi, Your number fields are probably using a text format. You cannot graduate a text field. Create a new field (columns) with a float or int and, using the field calculator to copy the data from the text field this new field. You can also just change the field type but if you do that, backup the data first as some data may be lost. Make sure the data is good before continuing as having a mixe of number format (like using commas and points) is all good for a text field but will not be appreciated by the number field. They will become NULL data.
