Well... You can sort of get a standard QGIS installation on Linux, if you use
the flatpak 

Currently the QGIS flatpak is 3.30 and comes with GDAL 3.6.3 by the looks.

There is no standard for QGIS installations ;)

We don't ship GDAL with QGIS on Debian/Ubuntu, but build with the available
version of the distribution.

You are apparently on jammy - ubuntugis has GDAL 3.6.2 for jammy.
Ubuntu lunar has 3.6.2 natively.

Hi all,

Device wise, we bought a load Samsun Galaxy Tab Active 3s (link below) for
archaeology field work.

Galaxy Tab Active 3 Tablet | View Specs | Samsung Business
UK

My colleague, our archaeologist, has one that he takes out with him all the
time that has all the reference datasets he needs (monuments, HER etc.) in
QField. We’ve also used these tablets with volunteers for a LiDAR project.
They happily dealt with a fairly hefty project, again in QField, with various
visualisations of the data on and they also had to cope with some weather
whilst we were out and about too. We’ve been very happy with them. They
come with a ruggedised case and you can replace the batteries on them! (unheard
of these days).

Hope that’s helpful

Hi,

We bought some years ago the Dell Rugged Extreme tablet and I want to say :
test before buy !

Even if QGIS works flawlessly with big projects, the Windows "tablet"
environment is just a pain, especially the virtual keyboards (plural form as
Microsoft has been unable to give something polished so we're using two)

Add to this that this real computer needs a lot of power, batteries, so is so
heavy that that you need a necklace to handle it all day.

But the worst is the "Rugged" definition. Could you imagine that there's fans,
that they are accessible behind plastic to the most common and dangerous thing
for fan on earth : dust. Look on the fourth picture to see the fan grid.

You see the point. Good luck and please share your finds.

If you use the ‘import geotagged photos’ processing tool, yes. It will create a
point from the GPS coordinates in the image header. How accurate it will be

change the geometry nor vice versa They are simply some numbers filled into

So you could e.g. drag the wrong positioned points to their correct locations

We're on Postgres13 and PostGIS 3.0. A quick test with QGIS 3.10.14 digitising

Hi,

It might be best if I screen record you a video of it loading so you can see
the performance issue as it is always difficult to discuss in text. I'll have
to send that to you offline from this thread as I believe videos aren't
supported by this group.

We are snapping to Ordnance Survey MasterMap because we work in the public
sector and are permitted to do so for council business. Depending on licencing
you may not be able to access the same level of OS data as you would probably
have to pay for it (assuming your company is private) so I guess that would not
be helpful in terms of replicating the issue. That said; I also tried it using
the OS Maps API (WFS) and it was also slow so OS may be able to share that with
you for test purposes.

In the older version 3.10 the progress bar always disappeared for some reason
so it appeared to just hand whilst the index builds. In the new version a blue
bar appears at the bottom but it is not a loading bar it is the one you get
when the application doesn't know how long is left. I tried to stop the process
because it was long running and it said 'Indexing' was running did I want to
try and stop the process so I'm pretty sure it is the indexing that is not
working for some reason.

Is there a way to pre-build the snapping index?

It works fine for smaller layers, things we create etc. If I can resolve this
one layer then all my problems go away so we would be really happy to pre-cache
the snapping index if that is possible.

Thanks,
Paul

Hi,

I made quick tests with some dataset and I failed to see any performance issues.

Could you create an issue with some data sample and project?

Is it the index building that take a long time (there is a progress bar
displayed at the bottom of the map close to the mouse coordinate information
while index is currently building) or is it when you move your cursor on the
map that the snaping information takes time to appear. Or is it when you pan
the map?

You can enable snapping for specific range of scale, avoiding building index at
very large scale where snapping is useless.

Julien

Re: [Qgis-user] Import mapinfo tabfile

2020-12-17 Per discussione Philip Barlow
Hi Jean,

That is a vector file format. A MapInfo layer is made up of those parts, the
Tab bit will be the only bit you see from the load vector dialogue because it
is the Tab file that links those parts together. The DAT file contains the
attribute table, MAP contains the geometry etc. (see here: MapInfo TAB format -
Wikipedia).

Just load that TAB bit and the layer will load in, you shouldn't need to
convert it to another format. QGIS will happily open and edit MapInfo Tabs.

Canonical seems to think this sort of packaging is the way forward, given how

cycle of your distribution.

Flatpak, Snap or Appimage would appear to be easier, distro agnostic ways to
install software. QGIS 3.14 is available as a flatpak… perhaps an LTR flatpak
woud fill a gap?

Although not mentioned very often, openSUSE is also a user friendly, stable and
high quality distro. I am a user since 2005 and have seldom had any problem in
all those years. As for QGIS and other geotools there is the Application:Geo
repository that is well updated and maintained. My choice however is to compile
QGIS from source every once in a while. It is not so difficult as it sounds but
perhaps not everyone's cup of tea.

Hello,

QGIS from Ubuntu repositories are generally very outdated. For that reason, we
always suggest you to add a QGIS project PPA repository and install a more
recent version.

Here you can find instructions on how to add the QGIS PPA repository in ubuntu
based machines and install QGIS 3.14:

https://www.qgis.org/en/site/forusers/alldownloads.html#quickstart

If you want to install QGIS 3.10 LTR, which I suggest you do, you will need to
read about the different repositories bellow. Basically, you need to replace
the URL in the quickstart instructions by this one:

OGR is a great option, if you wanted a GUI you could also do it with the
“export to PostgreSQL” processing tool in batch processing mode (right click).
Select all the layers and then you can auto fill the fields for primary key,
geometry column etc.

Easiest way for me is to use the GDAL
ogr2ogr command using a bash script or
cmd batch to traverse your directories (depending on how you installed QGIS
this should be on your path). I don't know what environment you're running
though.

You can either stick multiple shps into a single gpkg or create one per feature
as you prefer. ogr2ogr can also push shp files directly into PostGIS. When you
want to consolidate or migrate data (between gpkgs or from gpkg to PostGIS) you
can simply select the feature layers you want and use drag and drop from the
QGIS 3 Browser panel to copy multiple features to a target location.

Others might have different approaches though.

course in QGIS a good few years ago, but still..), i could really use some
advice about migration.

i've created a new QGIS instance in version 3.14, into which i am trying to
bring all useful content from our old system: oodles of shapefiles,
essentially, plus all those other files (each .shp file appears to bring with
it a set of.shx, .dbf, .prj, qpj files, plus a .cpg file for each layer, it
seems). This is a significant dataset- 14gb, >1000 files -and that is just
base data, not counting Projects built on this data or Layouts used for
presenting these projects in various ways. Some of this is cruft that i can
happily do without, but still: i've got a lot of porting-over to do, without a
clear idea of how best to do it.

The one thing i'm clear about is: i want it all in a non-proprietary database
(i.e. no more mess of .shp and related files) that is above all quick & easy to
navigate & manage. It is a single-user system at this point, but i do aim to
open it up to colleagues (off-LAN, i.e. via Internet) as soon as i've developed
simple apps for them to use. No idea how long it'll take me to get there, so...

Big question at this point is: What should be the new storage format for all
this data? Having read a few related opinions on StackOverflow, i get the
sense that GeoPackage will probably make for easiest migration (per this
encouraging
article,
it's a simple matter of drag -simple if you have just a few, i guess!
[1]), and can easily support my needs in the short term, but then i wonder: How
will i manage migration to PostGIS when i eventually put this system online
with different users/ roles enabled?

[1] Given that i need to pull in some hundreds of .shp files that are stored in
a tree of many folders & subfolders, i also wonder: is there a simple way that
i can ask QGIS to traverse a certain directory, pull in all the .shp files
-each as its own .gpkg layer, i suppose?

Any advice about managing this migration would be much appreciated!

As a quick fix have you considered using the flatpak version? It is self

Its well maintained I think, and its the LTR version.

Hi! Thanks for incluiding me.

I changed from Ubuntu 18.04 to Ubuntu 20.04, so I automaticly lost the qgis
software. When I tryed to install it again, many troubles came out, like "qgis
needs 'this' or 'this' but its not going to be install" or 'its going to
install 'this' in stand of 'this'; "E: the package its not found" and also "you
have broken packages". I tryed to erase old packages, tryed to clean caché,
tryed commands like "autoremove", "autoclean", "sudo apt-get -f install' and i
followed all the suggested steps from the qgis original tutorial but nothing
worked!

Its there any other suggestions about how to install qgis? this vertion is
actually working? I even tryed to install qgis copying from the terminal to
the repository both latest versions
(https//:qgis.org/ubuntu and
https//:qgis.org/ubuntu-ltr)

Please, anything will help, i'm in the middle of my final work to get a master
degree and i already lost 2 days trying to fix this. My plan B is just, get
back to Ubuntu 18, but its possible that that doesnt work easily anyway.

Thanks for your atention!

Regards.

Yes, 2.4.1 is too old. You need 3.0 or higher.

Did you also try the standalone installer whether that contains the correct
GDAL version?

Unfortunately, I don't have a Windows computer at hand for testing myself.

Hi Mike,

Have you tried using the qgis.org repo rather than the Ubuntu-gis unstable
dependencies one? I use that on my laptop (Mint 19.2) and its been working just
fine for the last year, yet to experience any issues (except the key expiring,
which was a simple fix).

You can also get QGIS as a flatpak
(https://flathub.org/apps/details/org.qgis.qgis), requires a few terminal
commands to add flatpak support (https://flatpak.org/setup/Ubuntu/). I'm not
aware if there are any plans to provide QGIS as a snap in the future?

This is probably not what you have in mind, but
I was really surprised over the last few days when
the latest QGIS would not install on my Ubuntu OS.
I am new to Linux.  FileZilla installed without
issues, but multiple Qgis versions:

Release for Ubuntu
Release with ubuntugis-unstable dependencies
LTR

All had problems with dependencies.

I guess this will contribute to keeping me on
Windows for a little while longer :-(

I noticed the install website:
https://www.qgis.org/en/site/forusers/alldownloads.html#debian-ubuntu
changed during my attempts to install QGIS, but
the changes did not make it work.  I will keep
trying over time.

Hello Gis-user:
I have two shapefiles, one is a grid made from polylines, the other consists of
polylines. I want to cut the polylines of the second shapefile with the grid
via the tool intersect. (I did it successfully before). Unfortunately, the
resulting layer is empty.
I checked that the two shapefiles really overlap, that they have the same
coordinate system. This doesn't seem to be the problem.
What other reason could there be? Strangely, the intersect works fine in SAGA
Gis. I need to do it in QGis, though, because SAGA Gis doesn't give me the FID
column of the split polylines which I need for field statistics.

Thanks in advance.

Yes, I did have a try with the Processing Modeler, but I failed to locate any
function to update attributes.

It seems like it's only purpose is to generate a new (temp) layer ?

Hi Lars -

Have you tried to take a look at the processing framework ? It works appr. like
the FME Desktop, but inside QGIS.
https://docs.qgis.org/testing/en/docs/user_manual/processing/index.html

If you simply want to change / edit the attribute-values of multiple records
from a layer in one operation, then have a look at:

Re: [Qgis-user] Moving nodes

2019-04-02 Per discussione Philip Barlow
Hi Amila,

To move nodes in 3.4 or 3.6 you use the “vertex tool”, you’ll find this on the
Digitizing toolbar next to the add new feature button. Select that and you’ll
be able to see the nodes in your features, left click on a node once to grab
it, move it where you want it and then left click again to place it.

To add new nodes hover the mouse cursor to a line between two nodes and you
will see a little “+” appear, simply click that and it adds a new node.

To delete a node left click once on a node and hit the delete key.

Hope that answers your question?

Re: [Qgis-user] PIN # LookUp Help?

2019-02-19 Per discussione Philip Barlow
Hi Craig,

There are various ways to answer question 1 but probably the easiest is to use
locator, if you are using QGIS 3.x you’ll see a little search box in the bottom
left hand corner. Try entering you pin into that, if you don’t get any search
results you may have to enable some additional locator filters from
settings>options>locator.

Other ways including selecting with an expression or using a plugin like
“search layers”

In answer to your second question my guess would be that you use metasearch to
add the tax record data as WFS and then join the layers together based on the
id or do a spatial join? I don’t know the dataset so I can only speculate.

Hope that helps.

Hello,

This site, that is located/used by Will County Illinois:

If you type in a PIN in the search box, you can go directly to the parcel:

Once you get to the parcel, you can then Look up Tax records information, etc.

I have utilized the County database tools to create my own QGIS map. I have
utilized all of the datasets. However, I am unable to do the following:

1) In my map, I am unable to type in Addresses or PINS in order to Go Directly
To a specific parcel. I have to move the map around until I find it.How do
you use a Find function to type in an address or PIN to go directly to the
parcel?

2) The County has stated that I should be able to use "Meta Search'
functionality in order to be able to see Tax Records information from my Qgis

how I can link up the data somehow in order to do this?

SAGA outputs SDAT grids that can be opened in QGIS, just drag and drop onto the

Hi Anthony,

Got exactly the same problem few days ago trying to use these tools as well.
The only work around i found was to install an older version of QGIS. (3.4.2
worked for a while, but then i got the same error so i finished using 2.18)
Please let me know if you end up understanding the issue :)

[Qgis-user] FW: associate images with a shape file

Subject: RE: associate images with a shape file

Hi David,

You can achieve the opening and previewing of images from within a feature form
in QGIS.

Head over to the properties of your layer, select "attributes form" and select
the field that has your image path in. From the "widget type" drop down on the
right select "attachement". Now scroll to the bottom of the widget box and
you'll see "integrated document viewer", choose image. This will provide a
preview of the image in the feature form. Just above "integrated document
viewer" you will see a tick box that says "user hyperlink for document path",
tick that. Now you will have a feature form that has a hyperlink users can
click to open the image as well as a preview of the image.

Hope that helps

You will need some kind of hosting, yes. Depending on your needs you may not
need a website, you could try a platform like QGIS Cloud?

Or you could try hosting on github?

Re: [Qgis-user] Point layer output from modeller point parameter

Thanks Nyall,

This isn't mission critical work or anything. What I am experimenting with
here, taking advantage of the fact that in QGIS 3.x you can point algs in the
modeller at data outside your project, is creating a set of ready to use
analysis tools for our users.

Is it worth putting a feature request in for something like this?

I don't know C++ but I've got the python basics and use the console in QGIS
from time to time, it's a skill I want to develop given time. I'll have a look
at the template.

Unfortunately not (at least, not out of the box). There's an algorithm
which converts an extent parameter to a vector layer, but the
equivalent doesn't exist (yet) for point parameters.

The source for "extent to layer" is at
https://github.com/qgis/QGIS/blob/master/src/analysis/processing/qgsalgorithmextenttolayer.cpp,
if you know c++ and feel like adding a point version. Otherwise, you
could use a similar approach and create a python script algorithm
using the script template to do this task.

Thanks Phil,
This solves the problem when I use Leaflet (it didn't work for me when I used
OpenLayers).

Actually I used this:

.leaflet-popup-content {
width:margin-right !important;
padding-right:5px;
text-align: Right;
}

But this solution causes 2 problems.
• Every time I will export again the map, it will create a new CSS
file, without this manual update.
Is there a way to make this update permanent (like using a template)?

• When I worked with OpenLeayers (and not with Leaflet), I had the
authors' name displayed on the map using the following in the template (thanks
to your help):

  authors' name

But now that I work with Leaflet, the authors' name is not seen on the map. It
seems like it appears for a fraction of a second and then it disappears under
the map.
I tried playing with the z-index values: 1, 2, 3, with no success.

Do you know what needs to be done in Leaflet in order to show it on the map?
It worked fine in OpenLayers.

Hi Yossi,

There isn’t an option to do this in the plugin but its easily done in the style
sheet. Open up qgis2web.css in the css folder of the plugin output.

Add “text-align:” to leaflet pop-up content.

e.g.

.leaflet-popup-content {
 width:200px;
 padding-right:10px;
text-align: Right;
}

Re: [Qgis-user] Popup content aligned to the right

2018-08-06 Per discussione Philip Barlow
Hi Yossi,

There isn’t an option to do this in the plugin but its easily done in the style
sheet. Open up qgis2web.css in the css folder of the plugin output.

Add “text-align:” to leaflet pop-up content.

e.g.

.leaflet-popup-content {
 width:200px;
 padding-right:10px;
text-align: Right;
}

Re: [Qgis-user] Fwd: QGIS web map - add author name

2018-08-02 Per discussione Philip Barlow
Hi Yossi,

No problem.

Qgis2web used to have the option to use templates, where you would be able to
add these kinds of things to the template so you wouldn’t have to manually add
them each time. I don’t see that in the QGIS 3.x version. I’m sure Tom will be
able to help there.

Thanks Phil,
This really helped and solved the problem.

However I have some issues:

I worked according to your instructions and updated the index.html file - It
solved the problem.
But when I publish again the web map, I get a new index.html file without this
manual update.

I looked to the link you sent me in github. They discuss there doing this kind
of manual update in the template. So I went to the templates files in
C:\Users\username\.qgis2\qgis2web\templates folder and made this manual update
in the template files.
This solves the problem when I re-publish the map.
But it doesn't solve the problem when I make an update in the map and save it
in QGIS Desktop.

I guess a solution for this requires an enhancement in QGIS Desktop.
Per your advice I opened a new enhancement request on github.

Thanks again
Yossi

Hi all,

Using Qgis 2.18.20 (64bit, windows) I can't download/open a specific wfs layer.
Using 2.14.18 (64bit, windows) the same WFS link works without a problem.

What is going wrong in 2.18.20?
The error is the following (in Dutch)
Laag se:OGC_Gasnetbeheerdervlak: Downloaden van objecten voor laag
se:OGC_Gasnetbeheerdervlak mislukt of gedeeltelijk mislukt: Server genereerde

The wfs link is the following (all public data)

AFAIK if you install QGIS with the standalone installer that just puts the
application and everything it needs into a folder in program files. You may
encounter issues if you installed multiple versions with the osgeo4w installer
if you aren’t careful.

That may be the case for the application. However, depending on the
installation, shared libraries may be overwritten when a new installation is
carried out and cause older software versions to stop working.

The Windows version of Qgis allows you to run multiple versions on your
computer side by side. I personally haven't used the Windows version for
several years so I can't be sure if you will have any issues running 3.0
alongside your current version. I run many of the editions I have in virtual
machines. If your PC has 8 GB or more of memory, or if you have access to
another computer that can run Linux, then you can try it out in a Linux virtual
machine or physical computer environment without disturbing your current
installation.

In QGIS 2 when you apply a pseudocolor color ramp to a DEM there was an Invert
color ramp check box. I cannot find it in QGIS 3.0.3. Am I missing something or
has it been dropped? I use that feature all the time.

Hi Boris:

You can use the grass modules under processing toolbox>Grass GIS 7
commands>Vector>v.build.check or v.clean to isolate the problem. Typically it
is a polygons with and intersecting sliver that creates the problem.

Afternoon all,
I have a slight issue, there are a number of MapInfo Tab Files which we want to
convert to Shapefile, but they do not convert correctly.
The issue arises with Rings/Holes in the Polygons, when you save the TAB file
as a shapefile, some of them are not displaying correct, they overlay the hole
as another polygon.
The issue seems to be related to the direction the hole was digitised/generated
to. The issue can also be replicated outside of QGIS by running ogr2ogr, so it
seems to be a GDAL/OGR ESRI Shapefile Driver issue.
Now in saying all that, QGIS 3 seems to be able to fix the issue by running,
Fix geometries from the Processing Toolbox.
My question is, Is there a way to fix the OGR Driver to fix the issue, or a
tick box under Save Vector Layer as... to run/implament the Fix geometries tool
as part of the save process?
This is an issue, which pops up regularly online, with no solution to date.
Regards & Thanks in advance.

[Qgis-user] QGIS 3.0 with GRASS 7.4.0 looking for 7.2.0?

2018-03-06 Per discussione Philip Barlow
Hi all,

I'm experiencing a slightly odd issue with QGIS 3.0 and GRASS in Windows 10
installed with OSGEO4W. The GRASS plugin seems to functioning just fine but if
I attempt to use any GRASS algorithms from the processing toolbox I get an
error message:

"The specified GRASS 7 folder "C:\OSGEO4~1\apps\grass\grass-7.2.1\bin" does not
contain a valid set of GRASS 7 modules. Please, go to the Processing settings
dialog, and check that the GRASS 7 folder is correctly configured"

So I go to the providers settings and the path is set to ...\grass-7.4.0\bin.
So why is QGIS still looking for the modules in the 7.2.1 folder, which
subsequently, doesn't actually exist. Is this a bug? Is the path hard coded?

I have 2.18.17 installed alongside, this also uses the 7.4.0 path and the
processing tools for GRASS are working fine.

Any thoughts?

Cheers

Phil

SQL?

If you are using shapefile you can use virtual layers if you are on QGIS 2.14+
or pop the layers into a spatialite DB.

And query thus:

SELECT **columns**

Hi Phil! Thanks for you answer!

The binary raster consists of patches and a matrix, this is the one used as an
input to be able to enter the Frastasts and calculate the metric of landscape.
As you will see in the attached image, the fragstasts generates me as a result
a table (at class level, patch level and landscape level). What I need is to
generate a map (for example showing the patch density) depending on the result
generated by the Fragstats. My problem is that I do not know how to transform

I think what I would do is some ā€ binningā€¯. You can create grids to the
desired size with the mmqgis plugin so you could make a 100 hectare grid and
then run the zonal statistics plugin to sample your raster, that will append
statistics from the raster to the grid for each grid square. You could then
style (graduated) your grid according to the ā€ countā€¯ column to give you a

Hi all,

I'd like to raise discussion about changing the behaviour of the "show selected
features" mode in the attribute table.

Over the last couple of weeks I've pushed fixes to both 3.0 and
(shortly) 2.18 to improve the performance of the attribute table when this mode
is selected (Thanks to Faunalia and ENEL for sponsoring this!). With these
changes *only* the selected features are fetched from providers to show in the
attribute table, vs the current behaviour of fetching *everything* and then
filtering out to the selection. It makes a huge difference for working with
large layers.

Now - there's one last piece of this I'd like to land, but it changes the
behaviour of this mode. Currently if you have the table set to "show selected
features", but there's nothing selected, then ALL features are shown.

This kills the benefit of setting the table to show in this mode. If you
accidentally open the table for a large layer with no selection, it'll force
every feature to be fetched again.

I'd like to change this, so that no selection = nothing shows in the table.
This means that users can safely set the attribute table to always show in
"selected features" mode and be confident that they'll never hit the situation
where every feature is fetched (unless of course they have selected *every*
feature!).

Does anyone object to this change landing for 3.0 and 2.18?

Hi,

You can set shortcuts from "settings>configure shortcuts" but I don't think you
can toggle snapping on an off with a shortcut key currently. You can set a
shortcut to open the snapping options menu though.

Subject: [Qgis-user] Is there a shortcut to disable and enable snapping during
digitizing?

Hi,
I have enabled some snap options, and usually I need to maintain them on. I
would like to disable it during digitizing. Is there some shortcut to do it in
an editing session?
Is there another way to do it?

I'm using QGIS 2.14.

Thank you
