Thanks

Agustin the wiki is a restore from ~ 2 weeks ago. I have asked Gary to
make it read only until our server comes online again with the current
wiki.

[Qgis-user] Why not in the forum? / Problem in Kubuntu

2008-06-07 Thread Michael Neubauer
Dear qgis-user list,

I don't remember how I got the idea to subscribe to this user list...but it
was a good idea, because a lot of interesting things worth knowing are
discussed. But very often I ask myself, why problems and questions about the
program and the plugins are not discussed in the forum. This would have
several advantages:
1. solved problems, hints and advises can be found via search engine in the
internet
2. it is a lot easier to follow the threads
and 3. it is preserved better for the future. Often I find things interesting,
but have no direct use for it. And then, when I remember it and want to read
it again, it is a lot harder to search all the mails in my mail folder than
to just remember the thread in the forum or search for it...

So my suggestion is, to discuss more in the forum! This would help me and also
a lot of other users, when they try to figure out their problems searching in
the internet.

And now,
as a second thing, very selfish, I will also ask for help in this list:
To all the people who use (k)ubuntu!
Dos your Qgis run well and do you have the "backports repositories" in your
sources.list?

I described my problem already in the forum:
http://forum.qgis.org/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=798
but unfortunately I did not get any answer yet.

Now I have the idea, that this might be related to package-dependencies which
were caused by getting the "backports" updates. Especially I suspect
something with the Qt4 libraries.
Does anybody know about a problem like this and how to find out to solve it?

Thank you very much for your attention!!

[Qgis-user] combining individual tif files into a multiband tif file

2008-06-07 Thread Agustin Lobo

Hi,

As QGIS requires a multiband file to make rgb composites,
I'm looking for an easy way to combine a set of individual geotif files
into a multiband geotif file. I was thinking on a command line process,
something like a gdal utility, ie

gdalcombine *.tif multiple.tif

..but gdalcombine does not exist.

I've tried with gdal_translate, but did not get with the
appropriate syntax.

Anybody with experience on a command for doing this?

(BTW, it would be so much more efficient having something like
the metafile in ENVI: the multiple band file is just a text list
of the individual files (very much like the image groups in grass)).

Thanks

Agus

[Qgis-user] Qgis for mac OSX Tiger: grass tools doesn't work

2008-06-07 Thread simone ciadamidaro
Hello everybody,
I downloaded the last version of QGIS (0.10.0 Mac OS X, all in one bundle,
http://download.osgeo.org/qgis/mac/qgis-0.10.0.dmg.gz) on my mac Tiger
10.4.11.
Unfortunatly, when I try to use any Module in the GRASS tool, it appears the
message :

"Cannot read module description (r.in.poly):
unexpected end of file
at line 1 column 1"

with the clicked module reported in the brackets. And so I cannont use any
module, and grass is unreachable for me from the qgis
What can I do to resolve?
A very nice boy ("coy" in the qgis forum) suggested me to download the other
version of qgis (the one requiring the dependencies) but this didn't help
me... Qgis couldn't even start!!!
thanks to whom may help me,
 simone

to produce layer stacks you can use gdal_merge.py, e.g.:
gdal_merge.py -v image.tif -separate blue.tif green.tif red.tif

Re: [Qgis-user] v0.9.2 Add Delimited Text Layer

2008-06-07 Thread Alex Mandel

That is a common problem and a suggested workaround is to open your csv
as a spreadsheet in your preferred application and resave it using
semicolons as the delimiter instead ; of course be careful as I found
with survey response data even ; occurred inside of text strings.

I had a similar problem with a comma-delimited text file using 0.10.
I am guessing the problem was related to the fact that some of the
values in the file have commas in them. The values are quoted, but I
would bet that they are what is causing the issue.

Hi everybody,

Any solution to the problem? I am using Ubuntu Hardy Heron, with Quantum
GIS 0.10 and end up in "The layer is not a valid layer and can not be
added to the map" when I try to load my ascii point files. Parsing seems
to work, I can set the headers and the file appears in the preview.

Any pointers to solve the problem appreciated.

Re: [Qgis-user] Why not in the forum? / Problem in Kubuntu

2008-06-07 Thread Alex Mandel
My personal take, is that a forum takes too much time to go to, and
nested topics can be hard to find. Also this list is web searchable and
readable as threads/forums through a variety of sites like
http://www.nabble.com/qgis-user-f31170.html

http://news.gmane.org/gmane.comp.gis.qgis.user
(I'll try to get these links to be prominent on the help section of the
wiki and website.)

Any real resolutions and common problems probably should make their way
to the wiki at some point.

I do see the flip side of forums being more prevalent in search engines,
the biggest issue being that I don't see people going to forums much
until they have an issue. Really Nabble, Gmane and RSS and NNTP just
need to be highlighted more in areas that newer users will find.

I recommend gdal_vrtmerge.py [1]. It produces a "virtual raster" (vrt
format) which can be loaded into QGIS. The vrt file is just few lines
text, doesn't duplicate your input data, but apart from that it behaves
pretty much like a multiband GeoTIFF.

Use it like:

gdal_vrtmerge.py -separate -o tm2.vrt *.tif

(Without -separate it will fail [2]).
