Re: [Qgis-user] openlayers layers without properties is it possible to alter brightness/contrast

2012-02-27 Thread Zirneklitis
Very primitive solution for any maping software: create an layer with a
polygon covering the region of the interest. Position just above the
layer to be dimed. Make the polygon white and semi-transparent. That's it.

With remote sensing data so readily available it would be virtually impossible
for any country to block access except within their own internet space.

To my thinking, the only country that could close off access would be the USA
and they are at the forefront of enabling the open access to all manner of
geospacial data to anyone anywhere.

The only option open to countries wanting to 'hide' areas from the world is to
camouflage those areas from the sensing hardware.

You should be able to just style one layer with sensible Min/Max values, save
the style, and make a series of copies of the resulting .qml file, named after
each raster image. You should be able to make those copies at the command
prompt with a single command ;)

Note that in the case of vector TAB files, support is for reading and also
writing of new layers. Editing of an existing TAB is not currently possible.

Note that registration is not _via a TAB file_. QGIS only supports TAB files
that actually contain vector data, not the TAB files that MapInfo uses to refer
to any non-TAB data (vector or raster).
Registration is either by creating a new file which contains the georeferencing
information (this would need to be a geotiff or something which supports that),
or via an ESRI style "world file" (these often have extensions like .wld .jgw
.tfw etc). I seem to remember that MapInfo is too useless to understand world
files, but I could be wrong (maybe it was too useless to understand the
built-in georeferencing in ecw files or something?).
Both world files and the georeferencing TAB files are plain text, so you can
create one from the other if necessary.

It really should zoom to the feature. Maybe it is an issue of map scale
or units? What units and scales are you using?

Do you have the search somewhere available to test or can you share a

Currently it is hardwired to a column named "tooltip". You need to
create an attribute or column in your table or view named "tooltip".

Currently there is no way to know which column is set for the maptip.
Later we will take the column name from the QGIS configuration as soon
as QGIS server supports that. The current GetCapabilities request does
not tell us which column is set for map tips. I think this will be
available later this spring as we also want to have the ability to
dynamically set map tips for QGIS client.

Hope this helps,
Andreas

2012-02-27 Thread pcreso
Hi Angelos,

I just installed QGIS 1.74 (from 1.73 which worked fine) on OpenSuse 12.1 64bit.
It is now broken with a startup error message as below.

My libpython was 2.7 from the standard repository. This had the same version as
the python repo you suggested.

QGIS is running, but with no python support, my system is fully updated as far
as I can tell.

Any advice/fixes appreciated...

Thanks,

Hi,

QGIS 1.7.4 works fine in my machines

You should add this repository in your system:

update and try installing qgis again

Hey Donovan,

the QGIS in the GEO: repository is built against Qt 4.7 which ships with
KDE 4.7. KDE 4.8 comes with Qt 4.8. You either have to build QGIS from
source or downgrade to KDE 4.7. That's why I did not upgrade to KDE 4.8...

[Qgis-user] Legend customisation problem - four decimal places

2012-02-27 Thread Zmogus
Hi,

I have a problem when creating legend (Qgis 1.7.4). Even integer
numbers are followed by 4 decimal places. Like: 91,1000-100,. I
would like to see no decimal places with integer or one decimal place
with real numbers.

Please help me to fix this problem. I have to create >500 maps using
map composer and manual deletion would take some time. I was googling,
searching qgis manual, menus, registry entries and haven't found how
to solve this issue. I have tried loading data from cvs file plus cvst
with data types definitions and directly from the shape file columns.

Am I missing something very simple?

Kind regards

Hmmm

I'm running 1.73 without problems on 12.1. I have libpython2.7 installed, from
the main OpenSuse repository. QGIS seems happy with this, although I have not
tried to upgrade to 1.74 yet.

Have you tried seaching for libpython with the Yast software manager & seeing
what is available for your system?

Or you can use the OpenSuse one-click installer at:

Thanks Alex!

QGis looks great, but since we are strictly a .Net C# shop (for everything UI),
it does not look like it will work for us. Too bad because I really like QGis
from what I know so far... There is an IronPython tool that is a plugin for VS
2010, but we are not even using 2010 yet, still on 2008.

I think you are more likely to want to look at SharpMap and MapWindow which are
.net applications and tools under open source licenses.

You should add this repository in your system:

update and try installing qgis again

[Qgis-user] .Net Control and more

2012-02-27 Thread David Speyer
Thanks for getting back to me Alister!

Now I have more specific questions for the group:

1) What map formats are supported? In particular are TAB files supported?

2) Can QGIS be used as a Control - Is there an existing tool that can
easily be wrapped into a .Net C# Windows Control? (The equivalent of MapInfo
Extreme).

3) Can a floor plan jpg file be layered over a blank map control and then
registered via TAB file using minimally three points on the map with Latitude
and Longitude? Then with mouse click know all the other coordinates on the
map? Is this a simple process? (Again this can be easily done with MapInfo
Extreme).

4) Web App and Stand Alone Support?

5) Has Layering - Ability to draw several layers of routes and various
symbols with different colors onto to the displayed map - programmatically
controlled? Legend? (Again using as .Net Control).

6) Access to Maps (can you get from web database?)

7) Report Generation Capabilities: If we were to wrap QGIS, is there a
wide variety of reports that can be generated (i.e. letting the end user create
custom map-based reports)?

Subject: RE: [Qgis-user] New to QGIS, Best solution?

Hi David,
It really depends on:
- what you need to do, and
- what addons you would have for MapInfo or ArcGIS.

I don't do a lot of GIS work, and I have no experience with ArcGIS, but I do
have MapInfo.
I gather some features of MapInfo are supposed to be quite good for things like
inputting and managing data, which is why it has been quite popular in local
government (at least in NZ and Australia).
As I see it MapInfo's main downsides are:
1) It isn't very powerful - you need to buy all sorts of addons if you really
want to do much in it. (I guess with QGIS you also need to use something like
GRASS for some things. The trouble with MapInfo is that it seems like you're
not really getting anything for your dollar.) If some of the major addons were
included with MapInfo then it would be a lot easier to understand why people
buy it.
2) In some respects e.g. map-making it is very user-unfriendly. Especially the
problems with the way its layout windows are connected to map windows. And
QGIS is just generally much nicer to use than MapInfo.
3) It doesn't handle data in all sorts of different formats nicely like QGIS
does.

I generally don't even think about using MapInfo these days - I haven't
bothered to install the last couple of updates. And MapInfo isn't going
anywhere fast - like someone mentioned in the link below, they seem to put all
their effort into marketing, while the software stays stuck in the mid '90s,
with little indication that it will ever really improve.
The one MapInfo feature that I currently miss in QGIS is the ability to perform
operations in the Object menu like "Split" on selected features - ftools in
QGIS only operates with whole layers.

I guess MapInfo is _a little_ less buggy than QGIS, but not as much as I'd
expect, especially given that it doesn't really seem to do much, and there is
so little change in each release.

You might be interested in some of the discussion at
http://woostuff.wordpress.com/2011/07/07/browser-wars-qgis-vs-mapinfo-11/

But I'm not sure how relevant this all is to you - it sounds like you are
thinking of building some sort of standalone application or web-based solution.
How would that work with .Net and QGIS?
If you're integrating with .NET I imagine you should check out Mapwindow. Have
you?
Mapwindow is quite nice, but it generally* doesn't seem to be as powerful or
user-friendly as QGIS.

*For some specific things there are very good plugins for Mapwindow that aren't
available for QGIS.

Alister

Re: [Qgis-user] Re: GPX and GPX_USE_EXTENSIONS

2012-02-27 Thread Marco Lechner - FOSSGIS e.V.
if you need GPX_USE_EXTENSIONS create a point shape, digitize your
waypoints and convert it to GPX.
You easily can combine multiple GPX-files using an ordinary editor,
because it's as simple XML-dialect.

 Hi Luca,

"converting" a Shape to GPX uses OGR-tools while the GPS-Plugin is a
very long existing plugin reading/writing GPS natively, I guess.

[Qgis-user] Questions QGIS webclient

2012-02-27 Thread bernhard . stroebl

Dear all,

I am fiddling around with QGIS server and webclient and I do like both
of them. Thank you for this software!
Whereas QGIS server's configuration is pretty straightforward QGIS
webclient is a higher hurdle.

Here are some questions (more to follow, I am sure :):

1) searchComboBox: I configured two search relations (views): streets
MULTILINESTRING and addresses POINT in my database and they are searched
ok BUT the map does not zoom in at the feature chosen in the comboBox
although the geometry is highlighted on the map

2) MapTips: the map tip always shows the layer's name no matter which
field I defined in my layer properties in the project. Or is the
webclient's map tip configured elsewhere?

regards

Bernhard

Sorry Marco, but probably I am missing something.
What do you mean by "add to the source shapefile"? The source shapefile is a
line one, so I can't add points to it.

Thx
Luca

I had a problem with the installation of QGIS 1.7.3 in the same version of

related to python. I've posted the problem in the forum, but so far there
wasn't a reply:

Re: [Qgis-user] Home range analysis not working in QGIS 1.7.4 xWin

2012-02-27 Thread Giovanni Manghi
Hi Elena,

I explained this problem in the past days to other users.

QGIS under Windows had finally an update of its python version, now
stands at 2.7

So the python libraries that QGIS uses now have to be compiled against
python 2.7

Unfortunately the RPY2 developer/mantainer is not going to make a
updated Windows/python 2.7 binary (unless someone will support this
work), meaning that starting from QGIS 1.7.4 the R based plugins
(ManageR, Home Range, SDA4PP) are not working anymore under Windows.

The solutions (beside using QGIS 1.7.3)?

support the above plugins developers to find a workaround (if exist)
that do not uses rpy2

support the developer of rpy2: he said that if supported financially he
will create new binaries, as long fix bugs and create a version for R 64
bits.

Cheers

[Qgis-user] Home range analysis not working in QGIS 1.7.4 xWin

Hi all,

I've upgraded QGS to 1.7.4 in Windows 7. I'm trying to use "Home range
analysis" plugin. It worked in 1.7.3 doing a great work in installing R an
rpy2, but now is not working anymore.
So, I have: QGIS 1.7.4, R 2.11.1, rpy2 2.0.3-1, rpy 1.0.3-1 in Windows 7.
This is the report of the problem:

[Qgis-user] how widespread is running nviz from the grass toolbox?

2012-02-27 Thread Hamish
Hi,

right now we at DebianGIS are packaging the new GRASS 6.4.2, and to make
things nicer for Debian/Ubuntu QGIS users who like to use the GRASS toolbox
we are splitting the GRASS GUIs and Programmers' Manual out into separate
packages, so you only need to install the core processing software, not
the extra bling and all of the GUI library dependencies, etc.

my question for you is if the NVIZ 3D visualization suite should go into
the grass-core package or the grass-gui package? i.e. if you wanted to
run the GRASS toolbox with NVIZ you'd have to install the optional
grass-gui package too. Versus a slightly bigger download for the
grass-core package but have NVIZ always installed. to be honest the
space issue is pretty minimal and can be discounted, this is more of a
conceptual question.

what do you think?

thanks,
Hamish

ps- when posting a patch or something which needs review to an old redmine
ticket, are those cc'd anywhere? or do they just live in the tracker
until some developer decides to look into the ticket? are supplementary
comments echoed on irc? I'm not complaining, just curious if I should be
pinging people personally to give them a head's up that's there's some-
thing there waiting. tx

Re: [Qgis-user] Database Manager and service configuration

2012-02-27 Thread Andreas Neumann

Hi Giuseppe,

I can confirm that the connection works now much faster. It is now a
pleasure to work with.

I notice that the Preview of some (most?) views does not work. Is this
because the plugin does not know which column is the primary key? Should
I file a bug on this?

Thanks a lot for your work!
Andreas

the first problem (slow connection) should be fixed [1], just use
DBManager v0.1.17.
I understand it was very annoying waiting for minutes before seeing
something... I hope you can confirm it works now.

I'm trying to fix also the other problem, the error displayed
retrieving

database privileges when a service is used to connect to the db.

Regards.

One issue I have is that opening db-manager takes 1-2 minutes (on
a
rather fast machine). Why is it taking so long to open the

In main QGIS the connection opens quickly. My db has hundreds of
spatial
tables and views in about 50 schemas. Is it scanning all schemas
and

tables at the initial connection?

I'm noticing the same, it's slow when the db has a lot of tables.
I'm going deep inside the problem, I hope to fix it soon.

2.
I get an error message after the connection:
---
Error:
database "an" does not exist
Query:
SELECT has_database_privilege('an', 'CREATE'),
has_database_privilege('an', 'TEMP')
---

Why is it looking for a database named after the user connecting
to the db?

Because DBManager is trying to display information about the
database

(permissions), but you have no dbname as you're using a service to
connect to it.

Tickets opened for both the problems ([1] and [2]),
Regards.

Re: [Qgis-user] Re: QGIS 1.7.4 crashes when trying to add WFS layer

2012-02-27 Thread Viktor Kalén
I've now downgraded to QGIS 1.7.3 and WMS/WFS works fine again.

As I can se from the answers theres only problems on Windows 7, 64
bits. But for some it works fine even on Win 7.

I have ArcGIS 10 installed on the same machine, mabye some kind of
Python conflict?

Anyways, I'll be using 1.7.3 meantime.
