[Qgis-user] Python-gdal missing

2012-06-20 Thread Luís de Sousa
Dear all,

I'm using Lisboa on Ubuntu 12.04 and since a few days I'm getting this error
message at start up:

Unable to load GdalTools plugin.
The required "osgeo [python-gdal]" module is missing.
Install it and try again.

But it is installed:

$ dpkg --get-selections | grep gdal
gdal-bininstall
libgdal1install
libgdal1-1.7.0 install
python-gdal install

In any case, QGis seems to be working perfectly fine, at least for the stuff
I've been doing: connect to PostGIS, to WMS/WFS servers, create and edit
vectors.

Any ideas on what may be causing this message to show up?

Thank you.

[Qgis-user] manual conversion / update / translation process

2012-06-20 Thread Otto Dassau
Dear Documentation writers and translators,

we are happy to see that so many people are interested to translate the
documentation with the new tools. But the main task we currently have to
work on before any translation really makes sense is to finish the
conversion of the documentation from latex to rst and to update the rst
files to the new QGIS 1.8.

For that reason Paolo and I decided to block the translation process for
now. And we would like to encourage everybody to participate in the
conversion and update process for now.

The list of files, that have to be worked on are listet here:
http://hub.qgis.org/wiki/quantum-gis/LaTeX_to_RST_migration

After we finished the conversion, we will set up a list for the manual
updates in the wiki. And then we will announce that the translation can
start. I hope you agree with us and as always, help is very
much appreciated.

Please write to the Qgis-community-team mailing list, if you have some time
to help: http://lists.osgeo.org/mailman/listinfo/qgis-community-team

Kind Regards
Otto

[Qgis-user] SUM line lengths - QGIS 1.7.4

2012-06-20 Thread Zoltan Szecsei

Hi,
I've opened a DGN file of contours, and would like to calculate the sum
of the lengths of all the contours.

Using Vector->Analysis Tools->Sum Line Lengths is totally counter
intuitive (OK, for me!).

Why do I have to have a polygon in order to sum line lengths - In SHAPE
file methodology those geometries are even in separate files!
And then to create a new poly layer in order to see the calculated value
seems kind of arb.

Is the polygon perimeter also added to the calculated length?

If said polygon is purely for creating a selection subset of the
line-lengths to be summed, then why not use the selection tool instead?

When querying an individual line, its length is shown as a derived
field. If there was a way to put derived fields into the attribute
tables, then at least that column could be summed.

Anyway, it seems like I have missed the point of summing line lengths in
this way, so please can someone enlighten me why this methodology is useful.

Thanks & regards,
Zoltan

Re: [Qgis-user] DXF file & geometry

2012-06-20 Thread Andreas Neumann

Hi,

Unfortunately there is not proper DXF support currently for reading DXF
files. QGIS only allows one geometry type per data source. The OGR dxf
driver delivers multiple geometry types. QGIS just picks the first one
that OGR delivers (could be point, lines and polygons). There needs to
be some work done regarding the geometry types and the styling.

For writing dxf it is actually better - but exporting styles is also
not possible currently.

Sorry that I don't have better news,
Andreas

[Qgis-user] Error 14 -- Unable to open ~/.qgis//qgis.db -- QGIS version 1.8.0-Lisboa -- Ubuntu 12.04

2012-06-20 Thread Paul Young
I get this error: Error 14 -- Unable to open ~/.qgis//qgis.db -- QGIS
version 1.8.0-Lisboa -- Ubuntu 12.04

It was discovered when I tried to define a custom CRS and save it under:
settings/custom CRS in QGIS 1.80.-Lisboa under Ubuntu 12.04 and saving the
custom CRS indicated this error.

I notice that the qgis.db file is located at:
/usr/share/qgis/resources/qgis.db

I created a link but this did not work either. Can I tel QGIS to look for
the qgis database at the above location rather that ~/.qgis//? Looks like
permissions are read and write for all users.

Thanks

Hi all

I am going to remove the .po (and .pot) files from the git project in
a couple of days (let me know if more time is desirable).
I will try to keep the existing translations and port them back in the
future scenario, if the rst master document outline won't change too
much).

For this purpose I have seen that some of you has translated strings
by using the QGIS Translation Web Application without committing back
changes to git. Please commit your work if you want to keep in git.
For doing so, you need to go to the review page (for example, this
page [1] for the French translation effort), and click on the "Commit
to VCS" link for the page you want to commit (before doing that is
always better to click on the "Update from VCS" link). You will see
those links only if logged and with correct permissions.

Does this helps? I was working wit a 1.4gb DEM and a 700mb shaded relief model

Hi

a) I am unable to load the NegrodeChorrillosGoogleSimple.qgs file. I have a
"bad allocation" error.

b) I can manually load sitios.shp (2 points), Negro_de_chorrillos. shp and
Negro_de_chorrilloswgs84lonlat.shp.

c) PuntosNegroChorrillo.shp does load but does not show anything. I look at the
attribute table and there is nothing there.

d) I can manually load the negroChorrilloETMpuntos.jpg raster, nevertheless I
have negative coordinates, which are not lat lon (-7395853,-2790190 for
instance) .

Does this helps? I was working wit a 1.4gb DEM and a 700mb shaded relief model
with no problems to load layers individually or as a project

Output dataset

but some commandline options were provided indicating a new dataset
should be created. Please delete existing dataset and run again.

can anyone help me to do the transformation ?

ADDITITION:
it is only possible to modify the gdad-command for single use - file by

is it possible to use usermodifiy-command for folder-transformations ?

Re: [Qgis-user] how to export jpg-georeferences

2012-06-20 Thread Richard Duivenvoorde

Hi Jan,

can jpg-files contain geo-tag information? Isn't it so that there is
already a jpeg-worldfile in the folder and what you see is actually the
information from that worldfile?

Anyway for geotiff's you can use the command 'listgeo' on ubuntu it is
in de geotiff-bin package (see for example:
http://packages.ubuntu.com/hardy/geotiff-bin, not sure if it is
available in osgeo4w).

I'm also not sure if it works for jpeg...

On a geotiff you would do:

listgeo mygeotiff.tif -tfw

So a directory of tif's:

for i in *.tif; do echo $i;listgeo $i -tfw; done

The other way around (so packaging the world file information back into
a tiff) is possible with the geotifcp command:

	geotifcp -e map2.tfw -4 "+proj=utm +zone=35 +south +ellps=WGS84
+datum=WGS84 +units=m +no_defs +towgs84=0,0,0" map2.tif map2geo.tif

For some background:

follow the recommendation, either delete the dataset before running
the gdalwarp command, or use the -overwrite option.

In linux you would use a bash script that loops over all the files in
the directory, there are plenty of examples in the archives of this
mailing list and elsewhere. I can't help you do this on windows
though.

(OK, for me!).

Why do I have to have a polygon in order to sum line lengths - In SHAPE file
methodology those geometries are even in separate files!
And then to create a new poly layer in order to see the calculated value
seems kind of arb.
Is the polygon perimeter also added to the calculated length?

If said polygon is purely for creating a selection subset of the
line-lengths to be summed, then why not use the selection tool instead?

When querying an individual line, its length is shown as a derived field. If
there was a way to put derived fields into the attribute tables, then at
least that column could be summed.

Anyway, it seems like I have missed the point of summing line lengths in
this way, so please can someone enlighten me why this methodology is useful.

Thanks& regards,

You can use command line tool ogr2ogr, e.g.:

$ ogr2ogr -where "OGR_GEOMETRY='POINT'" -f "ESRI Shapefile"
my_out_file_points.shp my_in_file.dxf

OGR_GEOMETRY could be POINT, MULTIPOINT, LINESTRING, MULTILINESTRING,
POLYGON, MULTIPOLYGON.

There should be one at ~/.qgis too.

Better make a copy of qgis.db into ~/.qgis.

That sounds weird to me. This is what I get (qgis master, ubuntu 12.04):

$ ls -l /usr/share/qgis/resources/qgis.db
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 23552 may 7 2011 /usr/share/qgis/resources/qgis.db

The owner is root and only root has write permissions. Which is to be
expected for a file in that directory.

Re: [Qgis-user] Problems with qgis 1.8 on win7

2012-06-20 Thread Agustin Lobo
Gracias otra vez Gerardo and thanks to everyone for helping out with this.
In fact, having the problem shown in

http://dl.dropbox.com/u/3180464/ScreenShot004.jpg

is my major concern. I'll be away from that machine until Friday
afternoon so cannot test if this problem is caused
by having the google layer in the background and not having the plugin
installed, but it looks like this is the most reasonable explanation
at the moment.
I actually remember that I tried to install the Open Layers plugin
and could not find it. Perhaps because this plugin is in one of the
repos (Sourcepole) that cannot be automatically
displayed any more because the "Add 3rd party repositories" button is
gone. I (wrongly) assumed that the plugin had been moved to core. In
case the lack of the plugin is the reason, we have here the first
negative impact of eliminating the "Add..." button. I think that this
type of designing decisions should be consulted in the users lists to
listen to the opinion of a wider community.

Also, and in case I can confirm that the problem is caused by not
having the plugin installed, a more graceful error handling
would be appreciated (i.e. a message stating "QGIS cannot handle one
layer because the appropriate plugin is not installed"). But I
understand this could not be as easy as it seems.

You can also try it with a simple test:

*
for i in C:/Users/tappenbeck/Desktop/Project/*
do [ -d "$i" ] && echo "$i" is directory
done*

Notice that because it is in a shell script and is broken into separate
lines already, the semi-colons ";" have been removed.

You only need semicolons when placing it in one line, like copy and pasting
into a terminal instead of running from a script.

Take your pick =)

Re: [Qgis-user] [Qgis-developer] QGIS 1.8 quits while loading layers

2012-06-20 Thread Ben Harrison
Good job Giovanni and Jürgen Fischer.

One thing to query: seems like Giovanni opened a new ticket (5832), but in
the meantime Jürgen closed the original (5809) with a fix/revision?

Ben.

If you actually mean there are no _directories_ listed, I don't know what's
going on. It works for me, either running the script from the msys rxvt, or
from the msys dos prompt (by running `sh script_path_and_name`).

If you really do mean there are no _files_ listed, try adding `else echo $i is
file`.

BTW, they don't hurt, but you don't need any of those semicolons at the end of
lines (;). You need semicolons to separate separate commands that you want to
write on the same line.

If you want to do that, why complicate things by using ls?
Why not just use `for i in */*; do` ?

Re: [Qgis-user] how to export jpg-georeferences

2012-06-20 Thread Alister Hood
Hi,
It looks like you have geotiff files which are incorrectly named with the
extension .jpg

For geotiffs you can use listgeo as has been mentioned.

If hypothetically you had the same problem with some other format (say ECW for
example), then you would either need to write a script to create the world
files manually, or you could use gdal_translate to translate the images to
another format, using the option to create a world file, and then throw the new
images away and use a batch renamer to change the extension of the world files
if necessary (e.g. to .eww).

[Qgis-user] postgres & postgis setup

2012-06-20 Thread mick
After dumping ArchLinux in favour of Ubuntu 11.10 I'm having a devil of a time
getting postgres 9.1 & postgis set up and working correctly.

Following the instructions in the relevant manuals and the Ubuntu wiki I end up
with ownership of various parts of the schema shared between superuser
"postgres" and user "gis" created with the installations.

When I go to the next step, create a table to hold a class of objects (eg.
highways, Rivers, ...), I keep running into permission problems.

The tutorial I bookmarked when using Arch now returns '404' errors.

What I need is clearer, complete instructions to:

set up postgis with all relevant extras and correct permissions
make a template of the above
create working databases owned by user from the template
fill the DBs using osm2pgsql

Is the SKS out there who can help me get this happening?
