can we offer authors to help with the migration?
it would be much more efficient if one dev does it all.

Make sure you have the ftools plugin installed and activated. I thought
it would be on by default?

What you want to do is done with the "Join attribute by location" in

Nobody (afaik), it's been left up to the authors of the plugins to
migrate them. Want to suggest a grace period after which we let anyone
do it (Not that there's any technical reason stopping anyone right now)?

I thought OSM shipped with QGIS now. Are you sure all of those plugins
are still supported and work with 1.8?

Users can still add all the 3rd party repos they want, we just tried to
make that less appealing (you must do it by hand) in the hopes that
authors would finally move their plugins.

[Qgis-user] GRASS plugin

2012-06-28 Thread Chavoux Luyt
Hi guys

Running Debian Squeeze (Mepis 11), I have installed qGIS 1.8 . I also have
GRASS 6.4.2-1 installed. However, I cannot install qgis-plugin-grass (any
version), because it is dependent on GRASS 6.4.0 . Is there any way to get
the plugin working with the newer version of GRASS? Is it useful to have
this plugin at all, or should I just import the .shp files into GRASS and
do everything from there? I used GRASS a long time ago and remember that it
was quite a steep learning curve, but very powerful once I knew how
everything fit together.

[Qgis-user] aerial overlay? pop around an airport

2012-06-28 Thread rhoskins

Vector > geoprocessing tools > intersect 1.7.3

I built a buffer around an airport of 10 miles. The buffer intersects 4
counties within the 10 mile radius buffer.

The resulting layer is a join of the airport attributes with each of the
county attributes resulting in 4 records. The geographic result is the a circle
of radius 10 miles identical to the overlaid buffer.

How would I get an estimate of say, the county populations that are within the
buffer, that is, an aerial overlay (assumes uniform distribution of population
with the county)?

If I knew the fraction of the area of each county within the circular buffer I could calculate it.
Also it would be useful to be able to have a sum (estimate) of the total population within the buffer.

Ideas?

I was surprised as well that the 3rd party button has been removed. Can you
point me to the discussion thread leading to this decision? The options on the
third tab do still imply 3rd party repositories.

An incomplete list of plugins, which users of 1.8 won't ever find:
-EasyPrint
-CAD Tools
-Click-Fu
-TopoColour
-OpenLayers plugin
-Mapfile tools
-Metatools
-Interlis plugin
-Quantumnik
-OSM Tools

Who is coordinating the transfer of all plugins to the new repo?

[Qgis-user] [1.8.0] Broken UTF-8 support in shapefiles - and workaround

2012-06-28 Thread Andre Joost

Hi all,

since 1.8.0 is now the offical stable version, I installed it on Windows
7, besides the old 1.7.4.

The only thing that does not work as expected:
All text with non-ASCII-characters (e.g. ä ö ü) is broken.
The shapefiles are encoded utf-8, and read fine in OpenOffice and qgis
1.7.4. It seems that they are interpreted as codepage "System", that is
1252 for Windows.
If I create a new shapefile, given encoding=utf-8, this will be broken
in OpenOffice and Qgis 1.7.4.

Layers from spatialite and postgis databases are not broken.

I found this workaround:
Look for the folder
C:\Program Files (x86)\Quantum GIS Lisboa\bin\
(or where the Program has been installed to)
open qgis.bat with a suitable text editor
Insert the line
SET SHAPE_ENCODING=UTF-8
in line 4
save it, and shapefiles in utf-8 will open correctly.

Hoping this might be useful to others...

And perhaps someone can put this into the windows installer.

Greetings,
André Joost

Thanks. I managed to figure it out late last night.

1) I open the scanned map in Gimp and place three reference dots along
the top edge, left, middle and right. I place two dots at 1/3 and 2/3
mark along bottom edge. This is the time to crop and rotate the image as
necessary. Also I reduce the DPI and image size as much as possible to
reduce the file size while sitll being readable.

2) Then I open the marked file in Google Earth, position and scale it
and draw a polyline that connects the dots in a big "W" pattern and save
the W as a kml file.

3) In QGIS I import the W file and georeference the marked file using
the properly positioned polyline.

Easy peasy.

Re: [Qgis-user] Problems to open older project

2012-06-28 Thread William Kyngesburye
A few things I see that might be a problem:

It looks like you might have an old matplotlib (it's getting loaded by a QGIS
plugin). I updated that after the Big Update.

Old builtin QGIS plugins are loaded. These usually cause QGIS to crash
immediately. Delete the QGIS.app and reinstall.

It's crashing in the delimited text plugin/provider. Take care of the above
things and see if it works.

my only experience until now is just about a few shapefiles I have

[Qgis-user] Intersect doesn't work, but it works with SEXTANTE

2012-06-28 Thread Manuel Spínola
Dear list members,

I want to do an intersect with two vector layers using the "Intersect"
function in the "Geoprocessing tools" but the function it doesn't work,
however when I tried the same function with Sextatnte it works. Why the
intersect from the Vector menu didn't work?

Best,

Manuel

Re: [Qgis-user] import vector layer in manageR

2012-06-28 Thread Paulo van Breugel

Hi Sebastiano

Thanks for the suggestion. Both are great tools, but I would use them
for different kind of tasks.

What I like about manageR is that it is basically an alternative CLI
(including syntax highlighting) combined with a simple GUI with some
predefined R relevant functions and with a loose integration of R in
QGIS (easy import/export of data between the two).

I like the Sextante plugin too, but it serves a different purpose (for
me). The R module does not seem to be a direct access to the R command
line (or at least I haven't found out how). This means it only gives
access to predefined functions or you have to create functions yourself
which can then be access through a GUI window. This is extremely useful
when working often with certain R functions, but without the option to
work directly from the command line and direct access to all R functions
(without having to define functions first), it does not offer the same
flexibility that manageR offers.

Cheers,

Paulo

Re: [Qgis-user] (no subject)

2012-06-28 Thread Andreas Neumann
You have to decide for one zone and then you can reproject data from
the other zone. QGis does it automatically on the fly (your data stays
in the original projection).

You could also decide to reproject data from both zones to a different
projection.

Have a look at the project settings and enable "On the fly
reprojection". Also make sure your input data has the proper projection
information assigned.

Hope this helps,
Andreas

Interesting questionb. I do not know how, but if needed, I have done
it by selecting the UTM zone of your preference within which you want
to merge together in a map (e.g., zone 13 and 14 North), and

[Qgis-user] point sampling tool on grass raster layers fails

Hi

I want to sample raster values at point locations using the Point Sample
Tool.

This works when using e.g., a geoTif as raster layer. However, it does
not work when using a GRASS raster layer (via the GRASS toolbox). No
error message is given. A new column is created in the shapefile, but
without values.

Note that I can work with the GRASS raster layer otherwise (e.g.,
identify and terrain profile tools work fine)

Re: [Qgis-user] QGIS - Mapinfo question

2012-06-28 Thread Saber Razmjooei
As Alaister mentioned this is not a "binary" tab file from Mapinfo. You
can open it in a text editor and read the georferenced points,
indicating the pixel location and corresponding point on the ground.
If it is only a single tab you try to convert you can do it this way,
otherwise you need a Mapbasic tool to output jpgw for you.

The other main problem is that no, QGIS can't understand a .tab file for a
raster, although you could write a script to convert .tab to .jgw (and vice
versa).
Going the other direction, I'm not sure if Mapinfo can currently understand a
world file, but it certainly looks like it couldn't in the past (Maybe your
friend could see if the Mapbasic code at
http://free-zg.t-com.hr/gorantt/geo/tfw2tab.htm works though...)
I presume it isn't an option to use an image format with embedding
georeferencing information (e.g. you could use a geotiff with jpeg compression)?

2012-06-28 Thread Bo Victor Thomsen

Robert -

AFAIK you can't (directly) write/edit geometries in tab based layer in
QGIS.

However, you can create a new _shape_ layer, do the adding/editing in
this layer and then right-click the layer in the layer manager and
choose the "Save As" menu option. The "save as" dialogue gives you the
possibility to save the (shape) layer as a tab-file.

Another option is directly to send the shape file to your MapInfo user.
MapInfo can read and use shape files.

You already have the answer, just send the shapefiles as they can be opened in
mapinfo either directly or via translator in mapinfo. So you can both use the
georeferenced basemap and can both deal with the shapefiles. Probably best to
check they look the same on both systems though.

Hi,

there's already a open ticket about that problem, see [1].

Regards.

Good idea. Would the idea be to port it as a plugin or intergrate it
into the composer. The later would be very cool. Kind of like the data
driven pages in ArcGIS.

financing
 Hi all,

I am discussing with Oslandia (the authors of the Atlas plugin for=20
serial printing) an option to include Atlas into QGIS core.

Currently it is a python plugin, the idea would be to port it to C++=20
and include it with QGIS by default. It would also be an opportunity to=20
fix several bugs and maybe feature requests.

 To see what it does:
 see
 http://www.oslandia.com/tech/?p=3D1079
 and
 http://hub.qgis.org/projects/atlas
 and
 http://plugins.qgis.org/plugins/atlas/

Oslandia made me an offer/estimate on how much the C++ port and fixing=20
of some bugs would cost. We can only finance parts of it. If one or two=20
others are joining we could probably do it. If not, we will just go with=
=20
some bug fixing in the Python plugin.

Please contact me offlist if you are interested in this functionality=20
and are able to contribute financially.
