Hi,
please understand that QGIS development is user driven: if nobody invest
in fixing an issue is because they do not think is important enough to
put their money, or work, where their tongue is.
If you are worried by this bug, please find the resources, contact a
developer, and have it fixed. It's as simple as that.
All the best.

Re: [Qgis-user] QGIS big fail in deleting Shapes!!

2016-01-19 Thread Dietrich Heintz

Dear Uwe,
shape-file format is a proprietary format and we sometimes observe that
huge shape-files perform better (faster) in ESRI software.

I work a lot with shape-files, but the problem you describe I never had.
If you have ArcGIS license you can manipulate the shape-file there. If
you don't have you will do it in QGIS or any other open-source GIS software.
That is all to say about competition. If you had a version of ArcView
you might have detected even more problems when working with huge

shape-files, although it always was very fast.

Hi all,

Here is some more eplanation of the issue:

http://gis.stackexchange.com/questions/58101/how-to-avoid-creating-corrupt-shapefiles-during-editing/79677#79677

I spent quite some time to fix this issue as much as possible from QGIS
side (Hint: "they" are not just lazy and ignore problems ;-) )
It seems that there is also a second (closely related) problem left to
be solved and it looks that it can be solved by shipping a newer GDAL
version.
Apparently the issue has not been completely solved yet and apparently
it is considered to be from "critical" over "big fail" to "fatal" from
the audience.
It would be awesome if you could ask the maintainer of your operation
system's builds for a quote to ship QGIS with GDAL 2.0 on your operation
system. We will gladly provide you with email addresses.

Best regards,
Matthias

Dear Saber,

thank you very much for your answer. I understand that there are
limitations in resources for the development. But if I have to deal with
limitations, I should work on very important features first and leave less
important things for later. Eg, if a BMW or Mercedes build a car that loses
it wheels while you are driving, they should fix this first before thinking
about new colors for the outer paint. When QGIS corrupts shape datasets
without warning and this is known for months,I wonder why anybody works on
new features like colored cells in tables. I'm sure that shapefile editing
is so fundamental to a GI system that we don't have to discuss this
in-depth.

I have very very bad experience with bugs and support of proprietary
software, in detail it's Bentley Map (former Microstation Geographics). I
payd thousands only to find out that the 'professional' support can't help
users or resolve bugs in their own software. So I know that this is not a
QGIS problem only.

In principle, I agree to support QGIS development as a sponsor. But i think
that it makes sense only if the very fundamental things like reliabilty in
editing the world's most used geographic data format have the highest
priority in the project. Yet, I cannot see if this is the case.

Hi!
While all that Nicolas and Uwe says is generally true and reasonable, it is
also true that bugs and errors can be more or less dangerous.
With limited resources, it is even more important that bugs are handled
according to a simple risk analysis.
In this case, it would go something like this:
What is the probability that users will edit shape files (high, moderate,
low): High
What is the probability that QGIS will damage shape files: Moderate (as I
understand)
What is the severity of the potential damage (fatal, reparable,
negligible): Fatal
And High * Moderate * Fatal equals a probable risk for fatal damage, which
ought to prompt for a rapid fix of ths bug, regardless of where it resides
in the QGIS ecosystem.
But oddly enough, I have browsed through many of the posts on the shape
file issue, but have yet to find a technical description of the exact cause
and origin of this bug.

Proprietary software also comes with bugs, arcgis is no exception. One of
the advantages is you can see the status of the bug and help resolve the
bug. Proprietary software seems to be focusing on fixing bugs for their
biggest customers.

Re: [Qgis-user] QGIS big fail in deleting Shapes!!

2016-01-19 Thread Nicolas Cadieux
Hi,
Generally speaking, if you save yours edits regularly, you should not have
problems. You should also save multiple version of the same files with varying
naming conventions as good practice.
Remember that closing or saving a project will not save your edits.  You
must specifically save the layers before exiting.  I believe there is not
a warning  when you exit a project.
If you have found a bug report explaining the problem, I suggest you read it
completely.  If the problem is different or not resolved, place a new bug
report and do a follow up as they may need more information.  If you don't
help, some issues may not be fixed because the problem cannot be reproduced.
Some issues do take time to resolve as QGIS does not evolve alone in the
world.  QGIS works because it relies on other project like GDAL.  So
even if you find a problem in QGIS, the problem may not be QGIS issue.  In
that case, you will be redirected to the other projects to fill the bug report.
To my knowledge, there is no black list of things not to do.  You can use
version 2.8 (long term release) instead of the latest version 2.12.3 with
cutting edge features.
Speaking of black lists, I have never see such a list ( or even a  full
public bug report list) for AutoCad, MapInfo, Clark lab, ArcMap or Microsoft
Word.  The reason is simple, they are secret and would show the true
amount if bugs these software have.  I prefer to work in an environment
where this knowledge is public.
If the problem persists, try other software like Grass, udig or Saga to do the
edits and you will be happy to know that you haven't paid 5000$ for those
softwares either!
Cheers!

[Qgis-user] QGIS big fail in deleting Shapes!!

2016-01-19 Thread Uwe Fischer
Hello all,

today I was working on a shape dataset and I had to delete some features.
Later I opened the shapefile in ArcMap by chance and I found that the
features were not deleted. They still did exist. I repeated the process -
and got the same result. Then, searching the internet, I found this
incredible post: https://hub.qgis.org/issues/11007

It is a well known problem (for 1,5 years!!) that QGIS is not able to delete
shapes in a reliable way!! I was horrified to read this because it is the
same as if a Word processor would not be able to delete a letter from a
text. I cannot understand why the QGIS developers haven't fix that yet. If
QGIS really wants to compete with ArcMap, they should fix it as soon as
possible. At least, the according menu entries or buttons should be
inactivated if they don't bring out reliable results.

My questions are:

* is this information still up to date? I can't read all of the 80
answers to the post now to get in-depth information ...

* does anybody have information about how they are planning to
handle this problem at the development team?

* is there a workaround for this? Do the GRASS vector tools bring
out reliable results?

* are there more of those software errors in QGIS that might lead to
huge problems in working on vector data and sharing them with others? If so,
is there a "black list" of things one is never allowed to use in QGIS if you
don't want to destroy your datasets?

Regards,

Uwe Fischer

Re: [Qgis-user] Insert backgroung color in a cell

2016-01-19 Thread Raymond Nijssen
Hi Giacomo,

You can do it but it is a fairly new feature. I think introduced in 2.12.

In the attribute table window on the top right corner is a button with
coloured blocks which opens the 'conditional format rules' panel. I
think you will find your way from there.

Does not (yet) seem to work in the print composer though...

Good luck,
Raymond

[Qgis-user] Insert backgroung color in a cell

2016-01-19 Thread Giacomo Minotti
Hi all,
in a shp file is it possible to color the cells of a column through one
generic condition, for example the strings insert in another column
(1-green, 2, red, 3-yellow,ect...)?
I'd like to have the color column in a table inside the print composer,
with other columns of other description.
Thanks
Giacomo Minotti

Mmm, but you can still saveAs QML file isn't it? Even as sld file. It is
in the same dropdown as save to db?

And note that you can also copy/paste styles from one layer to another
via context menu ( though off course not between computers/students :-) )

Re: [Qgis-user] How to save/export/import Styles in Spatiallite

2016-01-19 Thread Lene Fischer
Hi Richard,
Exatly what I´m looking for.
Normally - while using a shape - I can send the the QML file to another user -
but in a SpatialLite I don´t have this option.
I´m searching for a similar option. My studenta are working in groups and has
divided the large task in subgroups. When they want to share the work from a
Spatiallite we end up in a blind alley.

Lene

In the Layer properties dialog, in the Style item, in the Style dropdown on the
bottom near the Help button, there is (for spatialite and
postgis) and option to save the style in the database.

Is that what you are looking for?

2016-01-19 Thread Lene Fischer
We are right now working with Styles in Spatiallite.
Can´t find any tutorial about this topic.

My students had categorizes a layer and now want to share/save/export these
