I second Regis plan: if someone forks (or even clones) the github repo, and
creates a simple script to morph it a little to resemble the structure you need
for the 'QGIS Resource Sharing' Plugin to work (see [0] as simple example and
[1] for the nice documentation of it), the icons are one click away for users
(plus another one to install the plugin).

And the more proper Resource set's we are having, the better our style/icon
resources will get.

I've previously looked into this set, but my honest thoughts are that
the vast majority of the icons have very limited use in mapping, and
would just be cluttering up the including symbol sets for little
value.

So while I'm all for expanding the set of including icons, I think
we'd need someone to go through and cherry-pick a only a subset of the
font awesome ones which are relevant for mapping purposes...

Thanks - I have downloaded and will try it out.

The ticket being closed implies the changes have been merged to the repo
that holds the build recipes. Is that true? (I have not read up on
qgis ticket rules, and am just applying the usual practice that tickets
can be closed when the fix is on the branch that will be used for the
next release.)

It would be nice if the main mac binaries download page (probably also
others) had for each dmg just something like "(gdal 3.0, proj 6)" or
equivalent. Maybe it's just me, but the versions of gdal and proj seem
really important, whereas for other things I kind of expect that
reasonably recent is not problematic.

Re: [Qgis-user] Font Awesome symbols in QGIS

2020-07-26 Thread Jonathan Moules

Hi Régis,
The SVGs are only 853kB compressed (1.15MB uncompressed (6.30MB on
disk)), so size shouldn't be a problem.

License: Honestly I stopped worrying about licenses year ago; I've
already wasted enough of my life dealing with licensing. :-) The Pro
version includes several thousand extra icons and isn't GPL friendly, so
I'm just proposing using the free ones. The license for the free ones is
as linked
(https://github.com/FortAwesome/Font-Awesome/blob/master/LICENSE.txt) -
I just take it at its word that it's "GPL friendly". But this is the
pertinent line: "In the Font Awesome Free download, the CC BY 4.0
license applies to all icons packaged as SVG"

Cheers,
Jonathan

Maybe you can contact them to see if this is possible?

Another issue to be taken into account is that the package size for
Windows has already reached the limits of the NSIS installer because
of the proj-data grids. That means we need to provide a different way
to install those additional resources. Resource sharing plugin does it
nicely I think but is not enough advertised. Let's spread the word

Hi List,

Following from the discussion about ESRI Fonts on the OSGeo list,
I got
to wondering... could QGIS include the Font Awesome symbols -
https://fontawesome.com/icons ?

It's not actually a font but a huge set of SVG's - 1,150 in fact
(excludes the "brand" icons, which QGIS wouldn't want), most of which
are pertinent to mapping.

The License is "GPL friendly" -
https://github.com/FortAwesome/Font-Awesome/blob/master/LICENSE.txt.
