Hello Mathias

Thanks for putting this together. However, I fell I need to tell you about
these warnings:

Warning: Calling Formula.sha1 is deprecated!
Use Formula.sha256 instead.

This goes for every formula in your tap. I believe that the general
recommendation is to change all to sha256.

[Qgis-user] Using field from a vector join to define style

2016-05-04 Thread Carlos Grohmann
Hi all

I'm teaching a GIS course with QGIS, and the students noticed that when we
make a join in a vector layer with a temporary table (created with
"statistics by categories" from the geoalgorithms toolbox), we can't use
the "joined" field to define the layer style. Is this a bug?

also, when starting QGIS, I get errors about libproj, because of grass-64

[Qgis-user] scale of features on screen = real scale?

2015-08-14 Thread Carlos Grohmann
Hi all

I just noticed that setting a given scale in QGIS does not result in seeing
the features on screen at that scale.

For instance, if I set the scale to 1:500.000, a feature measuring 100km
should have 20cm on the screen (or printed). But to get close to that, I
must set the scale to 260.000 (my monitor is at 3200x1800 px).

Any way to make the visual scale match the real one? I'm trying to see how
a map would look when printed, to check if the details will show up nicely
without printing test pages.

 Depends what your CRS is.

I'm thinking at some stage of adding a choice of mode to composer maps, so
you can choose between fixed scale/center point and x/y min/max modes.
 That should help situations like.

You can add layers from the QGIS browser (double click or
drag-and-drop). GRASS location item with GRASS icon is in the browser
tree under the location's directory, that is not new, GRASS is
supported in the browser since the browser was introduced.

The buttons were removed in favour of the browser and UI tidiness
 after discussion on devel list:
 http://lists.osgeo.org/pipermail/qgis-developer/2015-May/037827.html

You can visualize and manage GRASS 6 and 7 (if providers are compiled)
in QGIS 2.10. The plugin (mapsets, region, modules) is not yet
upgraded to GRASS 7 in QGIS 2.10, the upgrade of the plugin is
underway for QGIS 2.12. GRASS 6 plugin is available without changes.

[Qgis-user] For the devs - 1 opinion and 1 request

2014-07-21 Thread Carlos Grohmann
Dear list,

I'd like to leave here one opinion about the GUI organisation and one
request:

1 - Comment - as far as the GUI goes, it's great. But some plugins just
have one option and still make an entry in the menu, for instance:

Raster - Georeferencer - Georeferencer
Vector - Table Manager - Table Manager
Vector - Spatial Query - Spatial Query
Vector - GPS - GPS Tools
and more, I believe.

Wouldn't it be better for these tools to be directly under the top-level
menu? Like:

Raster - Georeferencer
Vector - Table Manager
Vector - Spatial Query
Vector - GPS Tools

just a thought.

2 - Request
In the merge shapefiles tool, we only have the option of selecting files
from directories.
What about selection files that are already loaded in QGIS?
I think this would be a welcome addition.

3 - thanks for making this awesome software. Can't imagine doing my
research without it.

best

Re: [Qgis-user] [GRASS-user] Python modules problems after last OSX GIS updates

2014-07-01 Thread Carlos Grohmann
Hi there

Sorry, my mistake

It's the Dakota GIS Team who's using a VM. I'd just read that and it got
stuck in my head.

I re-checked it today and William's binaries are working fine (python
complains about LucidaGrande fonte, but that's it):

2014-07-01 09:01:14.232 Python[21856:d0b] CoreText performance note: Client
called CTFontCreateWithName() using name .Lucida Grande UI and got font
with PostScript name .LucidaGrandeUI. For best performance, only use
PostScript names when calling this API.

The problems are actually with Michael Barton's GRASS-7.0 binaries. (I want
to look at the global MOLA dataset, so went with v7.0 since it already has
the planetary bodies listed on the Location wizard)

In it, I can import matplotlib, but this:

import matplotlib.pyplot as plt

gives me this:

are problems with dialog modality, map selection widget, toolbars and other

I know that GRASS 7.0 has Strahler ordering as a module (r.stream.order, if

And you can always run GARSS from inside QGIS (but I'd advice to upgrade to

Well, the idea is just the opposite: to use any raster or vector layer
in GRASS, directly from QGIS. Any in this context means any normal
file-based layer. What you propose is just the opposite: to use GRASS
layers in other apps. This is something I plan to work on later. As I

layers, but not others like layers from remote services, from DB
connections or special layers like GRASS ones. I hope to give
support for all that as well, so any layer than can be loaded into
QGIS can be passed to an external application transparently, with
SEXTANTE doing the necessary work of conversion or whatever is needed.
However, I will wait until this first version works fine before

Re: [Qgis-user] Importing csv with UTM coordinates and zoning

2012-01-11 Thread Carlos Grohmann
Frederik,

I might be a little late in this topic, but are you sure these are UTM
coordinates?

They seem like lat-long to me, like: 51 degrees 20.930 minutes NORTH, 01
degrees 26.290 minutes EAST.

  Hi all,

I have to import a csv containing a lot of coordinates which look like
 this:

   51 20.930 N 01 26.290 E
sure thing, these are UTM coordinates. However, when I use the import
text file as layer tool, I have to define the right srs first. For
example, when I have a list of DHDN GK3 coordinates, I set this up as the
project's srs and define the layers srs to match the source system from the
coordinates in the csv. But, As you can see, these coordiantes have the
band-number in front of the coordinate, so I don't know what I should the
projects srs to. Is it even possible to import a csv which containes
 coordinates in this format?

 Thanks in advance.
 Freddy

[Qgis-user] uploading gpx tracks to device

2010-07-18 Thread Carlos Grohmann
Hi all,

I'm in a field trip in the Amazon, and I need to send some gps track
in gpx format to my unit. That is quite easy thanks to the gpsTools
plugin (which has some rough edges yet, but it works).
The problem is that when I visualize the tracks in my gps, I see that
they were 'closed', as if the forst and last points were connected..

Has anyone seem this before? (using latest package on Ubuntu 10.4...
GPS Garmin 60Csx)

thanks

[Qgis-user] open file (raster) dialog

2010-03-22 Thread Carlos Grohmann
Hi, it just came to my mind that in the open raster dialog, it would
be nice if the default option
was to show all the raster files, so it would be easier for newbies to
find the file. maybe not (*.*), but maybe (*.all_raster_extensions)

cheers

Carlos

Re: [Qgis-user] some impressions from my students

2010-03-10 Thread Carlos Grohmann
Andreas (and all), thanks for your reply, I'll pass that to my students.

I've using GRASS for a few years, for my research, but now that I
started teaching, QGIS is the way to go. The students are loving it.
(teach, it's so much easier than ArcGIS!).

As for the identify features issue:

Identify features: is there a way to identify one feature that's
partially visible, but the layer is not selected, so I can find out to
 which layer it belongs?

This is already possible. You need to change the behavior:

Options -- MapTools -- Identify Mode -- set to top down or top down,
stop at first - depending if you want to get all hits or want to stop at
the first hit. You need at least QGIS 1.4 or higher.

This is nice, but a little annoying if you want to change the behavior
more than often. Maybe this could be a drop-down list in the results
dialog? So one could change the way it works more interactively.

I'll keep you guys posted about the experiences of my students.

best

Carlos

[Qgis-user] some impressions from my students

2010-03-09 Thread Carlos Grohmann
Hello all. I just started teaching a class on GIS for geology
undergrads. We are using ArcGIS and QGIS.

My students want to share some impressions from the first two classes:

Plugin install: it would be really nice to be able to select more than
one plugin for install, instead of doing it one at a time (what if I
want them all?)

Identify features: is there a way to identify one feature that's
partially visible, but the layer is not selected, so I can find out to
which layer it belongs?

Symbology: Although the classification works fine, changing the color
for each class is painfull. Can we have color ramps or something like
it?

Translation: (We speak Portuguese). We noticed that in PT-BR version,
for the Project Properties Dialog, Coordinate Reference System, there
is a typo.
it should read Sistema de Coordenadas Globais instead of Sistema de
Soordenadas Globais (typed a S instead of a C).

I also noticed that when it comes to CRS, we have a long list of
_datums_, but not of general _projections_. So if I just want to
change the projection, say from Plate Carré to Mollweide, it's not as
easy as in Arc, where I can change the projection and the datum.

that's it for now. As new feedback comes, I'll post it.

cheers

Carlos
