I have gone that far, but I have four sets of maps with similar units. If
I categorize them independantly, I have to manually change the colours to
make them consistent between layers. This is very time consuming and I
was wondering if the colour can added to the attribute table so that I can
edit them more easily

[Qgis-user] polygon fills from different shapefiles

2022-06-20 Thread Firstname Lastname via Qgis-user
i have four different geologic maps that i have imported as shapefiles.
The files have filled polygons that have the name of the geologic formation
in the attribute tables. i would like to have a common colour for each
polygon of identical age/name for all the map sheets. Each map sheet has a
similar list of formations, but some of the formations are different for
each map sheet.
What is the most efficient way to make the identically named polygons
displayed with the same colour? Should i add a column in each attribute
table and put a formation code in for each one manually or can i add an RGB
colour for each formation in the attribute table? or, do i need to
categorize and classify these in the layer properties table after i have
added formation code in the attribute table?
i hope that my question is clear.

[Qgis-user] digitizing

2022-06-16 Thread Firstname Lastname via Qgis-user
i have been successfully using the georeferencer for some time. i
referenced several maps and they succesfully georeferenced and displayed
for me.
Then, i was digitizing and i ran the georeference tool and for some reason,
the new referenced maps do not display. i have exited and tried to georef
in a new project and made sure that i have the same CRS for the basemap and
the georef tool but when i run the referencer, the layer appear but the map
will not display. i have tried restarting, clearing the georef tool and
running again but i get the same result. Does anyone know what i am doing
wrong and why my referenced maps will not display?

[Qgis-user] most efficient way to digitize polygons

2022-06-16 Thread Firstname Lastname via Qgis-user
i am a qgis newby and i am beginning a large project that involves
digitizing several geology maps. i am trying to determine the best way to
manage the digitizing and avoid extra work.
my question to the group is: If i have several coloured polygons that are
adjacent to each other, is there an efficient way to digitize one polygon
and then use one edge of that polygon for the adjacent polygon so that i
dont have to redigitize the same edge twice and so that i will have
precisely overrlapping polys with no gaps? should i digitize one polygon,
export and rename it? can i digitize one have of the next polygon and
somehow merge it with the now re-imported polygon?
is there a more efficient way to do this?

many thanks

if i am using the georeferencer and i use another window in an application

trying to start the georeferencer again does not bring back the window and

not a show stopper, but a little inconvenient. if someone can let me know

Re: [Qgis-user] basic contouring and kriging

2021-12-09 Thread Firstname Lastname
Thanks for the information above, it was very helpful and i now have a
better understanding of the interpolation process.
As a follow up question, i could not find the krigging function in the
processing toolbox, only TIN and IDW. where do i look for the krigging
interpolation
Also, i understand the construction of delawney triangles and veronoi
diagrams now and how the veronoi cells are constructed. What i am not
clear on is, once you have completed the interpolation and you have
your delawney triangle boundaries, how does this get translated to at
regular grid.
the triangular mesh is irregular, how does this get referred to a
rectangular grid? if you have a brief description, that is adequate.

a contoured topo map or density contoured DEM. i am able to import the
points but need some help with the contouring

[Qgis-user] two items for help

2021-10-14 Thread Firstname Lastname
First, in settings, options, digitizing: i have clicked on 'enable
snapping by default.' when i am digitizing polygons, the snapping does not
seem to be engaged. i have set the snapping tolerance to 13 pixels. does
anyone know why the snapping does not work? i assume that these are the
correct settings for snapping to polygons.

second. i have imported several elevation model files into qgis. they
come in as x,y,z, elevation points. the original files are of the type:
GDBINDEXES, GDBTABLE FILE, GDBTABLX, and SPX. can someone help me with a
workflow for gridding and contouring these elevation files so that they
look like either a contoured topo map or density contoured DEM.

[Qgis-user] i have been digitizing polygons for a few days and QGIS crashed

2021-10-08 Thread Firstname Lastname
i have saved several times. this i know to be true because i have been
importing maps and georeferencing several times. i have saved these maps
as i have been working and the imported maps have saved. the problem is
that i have been digitizing polygons for several days and recently qgis
crashed on me. the polygons disappeared that i have been digitizing but
the geoereferenced maps have been saved. the polygon layers were all saved
and were not scratch layers. can anyone help me to understand why the
polygons did not get saved.
i am certain that i have saved dozens of times using Project/save.
i am reluctant to do any more work if i can not be certain that it is saving

[Qgis-user] georeferencing and displaying lat long.

2021-10-01 Thread Firstname Lastname
i have several maps to georeference that have reference grid in lat/long.
can someone please tell me how to display the coordinate grid in lat long
on the map so that i get some nice grid lines for reference. actually,
knowing how to post the reference lines in any coordinate system would be
helpful.

[Qgis-user] georeferencing

2021-09-02 Thread Firstname Lastname
i have successfully georreferenced several maps in QGIS. The
georeferencing tool leaves a black band around the rotated and shifted
image. is there any way to get rid of this. also, i would like to clip
some of these images to get rid of the margin material. is there a way to
do this in QGIS?

[Qgis-user] georeferencing maps

2021-08-25 Thread Firstname Lastname
hello
i am trying to do some basic georeferencing. i have been using the
georeferencing tool and i have been following the workflow suggested on
youtube files using the georeferencing tool
i have tried three different maps of new and old vintage. i have tried to
keep it simple with 4 points control points and have used as many as 10
points. when i apply the georeferencing, my maps are not calibrating.
even the control points end up 400-600 m. of off the true coordinates. Any
suggestions that might help fix this.
for reference, i used the epsg 3857 CRS
