AW: [Qgis-user] Licensing

2009-11-07 Thread Hugentobler Marco

Hi

I'm not so sure. Because if the company only uses your code inhouse, the GNU
project says:

http://www.gnu.org/licenses/gpl-faq.html#GPLRequireSourcePostedPublic

Afaik there is only a problem if the company tries to sell commercial licenses
of your code. But I'm not a lawyer, so feel free to correct me.

Marco

the source, for all GPL programs.

Hi

I one computer running Hardy Heron (all updates), QGIS 1.0.2, running
against QT 4.4.0 and on another computer against QT 4.4.1

When I create a new project, add a single polygon shapefile with the
size of 25 MB I can crash my whole session so that ONLY remote login
via ssh works to reboot the computer - X is using 100% of the
processor time:

I open the print composer and add the map. Nothing happens for a few
seconds, and trhen the screen goes blank and nothing works any more,
except of the remote login. Interestingly, from the remote login the
speed looks normal and very responsive.

I could reproduce this on both computers. The same happened, after
using Save To Shapefile and using that file.

Can somebody confirm this?

Due to the size (and copyright issues) I can not send around.

Thanks,

Rainer

Hi
I'm also begging for such a tool. Like you, I've been manually
creating these grids for printing purposes only. It gets painful when
I want to display the coordinates in the bottom and right of the grid,
having to create several layers... In fact I've been looking for a
quick way to add them in various open source gis tools and came up
short. So far GRASS is the only that I've seen that allows one to
create a such a grid in an easy way (I've tried Qgis, gvSIG, uDIG,
OpenJUMP, Kosmo and GRASS). On the downside, with GRASS I have to
create a new region and mapset and import my files, which is also time
consuming.

I am considering learning gmt, mainly to be able to draw these grids
on top of my maps... (though I am sure it will be useful for other
things as well)

So, to conclude, it would be really cool if Qgis had such a feature!

There should be some development on a tool allowing to insert such a

AW: [Qgis-user] Undo and redo editing

2009-06-16 Thread Hugentobler Marco
Hi Horst

I also like to have the node tools in a pull-down menu.

Still I think the separation basic editing toolbar / advanced editing toolbar
makes sense because some advanced tools are probably used less frequently, so
user should have the possibility to show/hide this toolbar depending on his
current task.

My suggestion is to hide the advanced editing toolbar by default (for the first
start of qgis) such that user interface seems less overcrowded for new users.

Also, I'd like to move the split feature tool to the advanced editing toolbar
as it probably is used less frequently than 'add feature' and the node tools.

What do you think?

the error doesn't show up on each cutting action, but if you try the

try to cut lines on several (10-20) locations and it should happen
sometimes).

- Quantum GIS - 1.1.0-Pan (Unstable) 'Pan (Unstable)' (10874M) (on

but happens also on Windows/OSGeo-Version 1.0.2 and trunk
- ogrinfo cuttingtest.shp = 1: cuttingtest (Line String)

AW: [Qgis-user] WFS Support in QGIS ?!

2009-04-28 Thread Hugentobler Marco
Hi Peter

There is WFS support in QGIS with the WFS plugin (plugins - manage plugins -
WFS plugin). However, be warned that it has not the same level of maturity as
the WMS support. Also, the WFS provider loads everything into virtual memory
which might be too much for really big datasets.

Marco

Betreff: [Qgis-user] WFS Support in QGIS ?!

Hello,

I see support for WMS layer import which works reasonably well.
I am not seeing WFS feature support, including the attribute
data that belongs to the requested feature.

WFS support in a GIS is, in some ways, more important than WMS
support. This is due to the fact that the GIS can already 'map'
things. The point of a GIS is to be able to analyze geographic data
based on the assigned attributes given to geographic locales.

Being able to use WMS to make pretty pictures is all well and good.
The *real* work of GIS has always been in the data analysis.

The OGC standards for geographic data interchange
(ie: WFS, WMS, SOS, WCS, GML, TML,...etc.)
should be the main focus of any aspiring GIS product/application.

QGIS programmers can be proud of the fact that they are one of
only 4 applications that reasonably support WMS. There are a
few non-free applications out there that are supporting WMS
very poorly.

There are currently *NO applications* that are properly supporting
WFS. Although I haven't looked at ESRI products lately. It would be
quite a coupe for QGIS to move ahead of the pack by supporting
import/export of the majority of the OGC specifications.

NOTES:

While testing, using a multi-polygon vector with 31478 polygons,
each with 3 attributes,I have noticed that **BOTH** Mozilla Thunderbird
and M.S Internet Explorer run out of memory while downloading large WFS
vector requests in XML format.

I downloaded the same vector using 'wget'. The resulting XML file size
was a bit larger than 82MB.

When developing robust applications for WFS (or any other XML format)
it may be wise to anticipate massive files.

Peter

I think theres enough time to think about it - and all I can say is:

I have no idea when the gdal package will be updated. Hopefully someone else on
the list knows more about the packaging process?

I have some other receipts to make qgis crash by SIGABRT or by segfault,
under fairly standard usage

Each crash probably has a different reason. Please go on and fill them into the
tracker (after checking they are not already there).

Marco

Hello list,

this is my first post here, and I'd like first to thank all the people
involved in the Quantum GIS project. This looks already great, and
really promising.

I'm here to report a bug, probably in the way ubuntu binairies are
packaged. To reproduce, follow the steps :

1 - you need ubuntu 8.10
2 - follow instructions on http://www.qgis.org/download/binaries.html to
get the software installed
3 - grab sample data from http://www.qgis.org/download/sample-data.html
4 - run qgis
5 - open the vector layer trees.shp from the samples
6 - open layer properties, go to the symbology tab
7 - change the legend type from single symbol to graduated symbol
8 - try to classify in 3 classes the AREA_KM2

when pressing the classify button, qgis crashes, with output :

Hi all!

If I understand the concept, the print composer enables viewing of
multiple maps and successively printing/saving.

What I can't figure out is how to load different maps (raster or
vector) on the different map frames I have currently on-display (in the
print composer I mean). Is it working or is it still on-the-way?

Thank you, Nikos

AW: [Qgis-user] snapping, revisited

2008-12-03 Thread Hugentobler Marco
Hi all,

Same question as the last time we discussed this:
What shall we do if the layer is reprojected? In most cases, the pixel/layer
unit is not uniform accross the map canvas. So it is not possible to map number
of pixels to distance in layer units (or at least that would not be valid for
the whole map).
Let me know if you have any good ideas how to solve this.

Marco

Can't we reffer to the reprojected coordinates? Maybe it's something to add to
the API?

Maybe it is possible with a method that takes the tolerance in pixels, the
point where the user clicked and the layer involved. The method then would
calculate the search rectangle in layer coordinates.

No, it's always slow...
I can't believe there is no solution to make work QGIS on a database in

The solution with POSTGIS is too much difficult and long to apply... And we are

Thanks, but I can't change now my strategy of database...

I'm gonna try to make differente file opening the same database...

 Many thanks,

Hi Micha,

To connect PostGIS with ArcGIS products (basic ArcView license and up)
you can use zigGIS (http://pub.obtusesoft.com/). This program used to be
open source (see http://code.google.com/p/ziggis/ although I've had no
luck making it work with 9.2). The developer has since commercialized
and revamped the program with a $279 price tag. (In context and ranting
in Canadian dollars, ArcView is about $3000, but the minimum license
required to connect and edit with an ArcSDE spatial database is
ArcEditor, which is about $1. I think ArcInfo is about $2, and
ArcSDE is about $15000 not including database software, which ranges
from $0 for PostgreSQL to $5000 for MS SQL Server and to $6 for
Oracle Spatial). ZigGIS adds some GUI controls to ArcGIS, and it has
read/write capabilities. The demo is worth a try, but it only shows a
limited number of rows. I don't have a lot of experience with this
product, so I can't say too much about any limitations except that it
appeared to work fine.

To connect PostGIS with Autodesk products (i.e., AutoCAD Map 3D 2008 and
up, MapGuide Enterprise or MapGuide Opensource) you can use the PostGIS
Provider for FDO (http://trac.osgeo.org/fdo/wiki/FdoPostGISNotes in
addition I recommend using the Windows DLLs from
http://www.geomapgis.com/web/geomap-group/fdo/index.html). However, this
FDO Provider is regarded as beta-quality in every sense (see Open
Tickets on Trac page). I've run into many issues with this driver, but
have overcome many of these with customized trigger functions that
synchronize a second replica table for FDO clients. The nice thing about
this effort is that the CAD folks where I work can continue to use
familiar software to digitize coordinates, polylines, etc., and the
geospatial data are identical in QGIS and AutoCAD displays at all times.

I've also used PostGIS for a limited amount of time with Manifold System
(http://www.manifold.net/), which has built-in support. However, I've
had issues with adding and editing shapes since it commits edits
instantly without any ability to fill in attributes before, which
usually raises PostgreSQL constraint errors (e.g., I need to assign a
unique non-null name to each new feature of a certain layer).

With all that said, by far my best PostGIS experience with a desktop app
is with QGIS, since it works out of the open source box. I don't need
to fabricate any database workarounds for QGIS as I do for FDO, which is
of great convenience. The people at my workplace that are using QGIS
(starting since 1 month ago) have picked it up quickly, and the value of
GIS in the office has gone up quite a bit, since it is no longer
exclusive to the few technicians with expensive software.

AW: [Qgis-user] getting QgsMapCanvasSnapper to work

2008-11-18 Thread Hugentobler Marco
Hi Cedric

I used your code lines and started the debugger. It seems that the
QgsMapCanvasSnapper works correctly. I think the problem has to do with the
QList reference in the binding:

int snapToCurrentLayer( const QPoint p, QListQgsSnappingResult results,
QgsSnapper::SnappingType snap_to, double snappingTol = -1, const
QListQgsPoint excludePoints = QListQgsPoint() );

I tried to change that to:

int snapToCurrentLayer( const QPoint p, QListQgsSnappingResult results
/Out/, QgsSnapper::SnappingType snap_to, double snappingTol = -1, const
QListQgsPoint excludePoints = QListQgsPoint() );

But then Python complains about a wrong type of the results parameter with your
code. I tried to use a 'QList' instead of '[]', but it seems there is no QList
in PyQt?

Python experts: How can we deal with QList in PyQGIS?

Regards,
Marco

Betreff: [Qgis-user] getting QgsMapCanvasSnapper to work

Hi all!

I'm trying to snap a vertex with my python plugin. (Many thanks to Martin for
the quick work with the bindings!)

My code looks like this:

def canvasReleaseEvent(self,event):
x = event.pos().x()
y = event.pos().y()

startingPoint = QPoint(x,y)
result = []
excludePoints = []

snapper = QgsMapCanvasSnapper(self.canvas)

snapper.snapToCurrentLayer (startingPoint,result,QgsSnapper.SnapToVertex,
1, excludePoints)
print result: ,result

The problem is, whatever I do, the result keeps empty. I tried to play with
tolerance and scale and I'm quite sure it has to find a vertex but without any
success (the layer unit is meter).

So I thought about using QgsSnapper directly. But I'm not able to set it up
properly. Doing the following snippet always leads to a attribut error on the
snapLayer struct.

  snapLayer = QgsSnapper.SnapLayer
  snapLayer.mLayer = self.iface.mapCanvas().currentLayer()
  snapLayer.mTolerance = 1000
  snapLayer.mSnapTo = QgsSnapper.SnapToVertex

So, if anyone has a hint why the QgsMapCanvasSnapper doesn't want to give me a
result or how I set up the struct correctly, it would be wonderful to share it
with me :-)

Best regards and kudos to all the helping people here on the list!
Cédric

AW: [Qgis-user] Qgis on eeepc 901: 2nd round

Hi Agustin,

The packages are compiled with compiler opimisation turned on. So I don't
expect speed improvements with self-compiled binaries. In terms of storage
efficiency, it may be an advantage that by compiling yourself you can only
include what you need (e.g. grass, postgis, gsl, expat, georeferencer, gpx, wfs
are optional).

Hi!

After solving few problems related to the OS
(Xandros vs ubuntu-) thanks to the kind help of many people,
I'm now about trying to install QGIS
on the eeepc 901 running ubuntu-eee
instead of its original Xandros
(I'll tell why in a future and more
comprehensive message).

Before starting (this afternoon), one question:
In terms of efficiency of the resulting QGIS,
is it better that I compile myself on the
eee-pc or would I get similar performance
by installing the ubuntu binaries?

In other words, does it pay in terms
of efficiency the (for me considerable) complexity
of compiling myself? Note that this is a tiny
machine, thus any improvement could be important
in the long term, so I'm kind of resigned myself to
the involved task of compiling if you think
that I ought to.

Thanks

Agus

AW: [Qgis-user] Diagram branch - move to trunk or compile for Windows?

2008-08-11 Thread Hugentobler Marco
Hi John,

Unfortunately, it is not possible to merge the diagram branch to trunk because
the feature freeze for 1.0 is very soon.
I updated the diagram branch to contain the newest developments of trunk (until
today) and compiled a windows binary:

http://karlinapp.ethz.ch/qgis_diagram_bin.zip

But it does not contain python and GRASS support. For the compilation of a
comprehensive windows build, Marco Pasetti would be the person to ask.

I have a need for diagram symbology -- little pie charts or bar charts
on top of each shape. This is present in the Diagram Branch, that
I've successfully checked out and built for MacOS. But it was a painful
process for me, as a Java programmer, to compile a C program.

I imagine I will have even more trouble trying to compile under Windows,
since I'm even less of a Windows programmer than I am a C programmer.
Has someone built (can someone build?) the Diagram Branch for Windows,
and if so can they ship it to me?

Or, even better, can it be integrated into the trunk now?

Background: we're hoping to include QGIS (and PostgreSQL and PostGIS) in
our standard distribution of PECAS, an open-source spatial economic
simulation framework that state and local governments use to evaluate
transportation infrastructure, transportation policy and land use
regulations. Government agencies run two scenarios for 30 years with
PECAS, and then want to look at the differences between the scenarios,
and the trends through time, on a GIS. Bar charts are good for showing
trends through time, and can also be good for showing two values (from
two scenarios) side-by-side.

AW: [Qgis-user] printing with metis?

2008-08-04 Thread Hugentobler Marco
Hi Marco,

If you are curious about the print composer developments, just check out the
printing branch:
svn co https://svn.osgeo.org/qgis/branches/advanced_printing_branch

I'm trying to bring the branch to a stable state until 15. August so it can be
tested by interested folks. 25. August is the feature freeze for 1.0 and the
latest date for merge.

To your suggestions:

2. on mouse over the object may show a tooltip showing the name of the
object

That's a good idea, I added it to my todo list. Maybe tooltip could also show
the most important properties of the object

3. users should be able to resize the objects on the page directly with the
mouse (such as resizing windows); now resizing is possible only giving the
width-height parameters as numbers (that's good for a fine sizing, but not
for a quick one)

In printcomposer branch, it is possible to resize the maps in composer and also
to move the content of composer map. For the other objects (scale bar, label,
legend), resizing changes the size of the frame, but not the size of the
content.

1. when the user press an add object button, the object may be
automatically placed on the map, with a standard (small) dimension and
position (left up corner?)

I'm not sure about that. Most graphic programs (and also the main window of
QGIS for some tools) work the way that a user picks a tool and nothing happens
until mouse click or drag in canvas is done. E.g. in inkscape, if you add a
rectangle, you pick the rectangle tool and the rectangle appears once the user
drags the mouse on the canvas. I think it is quite natural to work this way.

However, in inkscape, there is a changing mouse cursor depending on the
selected tool. I think that would also be helpful in the print composer.

Marco

Hi Andreas,

Marco (Pasetti) - can you elaborate on what you want to see adressed
regarding the usability in the print composer? Any concrete suggestions?
As you said, it would be better to discuss the usability problems first
 before everything is implemented.

yes, I agree; the topic needs to be expanded...

OT: you (all) can call me as marcopx (my commit username) to not make
confusion between me and Marco Hugentoblers ;)

you mean a tooltip? - this would be a good idea!

yes, correct; what I recorded from many users (myself too) is that when you
press a button in the Map Composer nothing actually happens; you need to put
the mouse over the map an press the left button again to see the object
placed on the map; what I suggest is:

1. when the user press an add object button, the object may be
automatically placed on the map, with a standard (small) dimension and
position (left up corner?)
2. on mouse over the object may show a tooltip showing the name of the
object
3. users should be able to resize the objects on the page directly with the
mouse (such as resizing windows); now resizing is possible only giving the
width-height parameters as numbers (that's good for a fine sizing, but not
for a quick one)
4. (minor) the layout page should be zoomable also using the mouse wheel

That's mainly what I suggest

I'll give you more notes if I'll write down some new :)

Regards,

Marco

AW: [Qgis-user] lines with arrowheads

2008-06-03 Thread Hugentobler Marco
Hi Tim,

Marco what is the plan / status of that for 1.0?

Prior 1.0, there will be no major redesign of vector rendering mechanism. Post
1.0, I think it is absolutely necessary to do so and to let renderer subclasses
decide what shapes to draw.

I think the patch only makes sense if, as you suggested in February (see
below), the arrow heads can be enabled/disabled via vector layer props and the
state is saved to the project file.

If anyone vigorously disagrees let me know,
otherwise I'll incorporate your patch in 0.9.3 with some additions
from myself to enabled or disable line arrows via the layer props
dialog, the vector api and the layer properties serialisation
mechanism.

Regards,
Marco

Hi

Yes I was for accepting the patch, but I believe others wanted to
wait under we had rendering stuff revised. Marco what is the plan /
status of that for 1.0? My feeling is we should reconsider the patch
if we wont have the render modules in place for 1.0

Tim

2008/6/2 Stefanie Tellex [EMAIL PROTECTED]:
I submitted a patch to do this a while back, but I don't think it was
accepted. I thought it was because it was decided to wait until a more
modular rendering pipeline was added, but I can't find the messages about
that in the thread. In fact the thread implies it would be accepted, but
if it made it into svn, I never noticed it.

 The patches are attached.  (arrows_in_linestrings draws arrows;
draw_start_and_stop draws a green dot at the start and a red dot at the
 end.)

This message suggests an alternative solution that doesn't require compiling
 qgis yourself:

One of the outputs from r.flow in GRASS is downslope flow lines. Without

Is there a way to draw these lines with arrowheads? Or some other
 approach that might achieve this?

AW: [Qgis-user] Unable to open databases

2008-05-30 Thread Hugentobler Marco
Hi Carlos,

I had a similar problem recently and it was ok after I did a make clean or a
fresh svn checkout (svn update was not enough).
Don't know if your problem is the same or a different one.

Marco

Betreff: [Qgis-user] Unable to open databases

I have recently lost connection to srs.db and also (I think) qgis.db
databases, so I get different errors and problems running both 0.10.0
and trunk versions ('Critical: Can't open database: unable to open
database file' and similar). I don't really know where the problem comes
from, but I think it can be related with sqlite packages in my system.
I've tried reinstalling/updating sqlite, but the problem is still there.
Any idea?
Regards
Carlos

AW: [Qgis-user] why is EPSG:2180 not recognised?

2008-04-07 Thread Hugentobler Marco
Hi Maciej, Jean-Claude

Please don't tell me that I can send a patch with updates for the CS
database. That would fix only my problem, while EPSG database has lots
of fixes and additions in each new version, which get included in new
releases of PROJ, GDAL, GRASS but not in QGIS.

It is of course also possible that you update the other entries in the sqlite
database of qgis.

Ideal would be a volunteer that acts as a maintainer of srs.db and updates it
in regular periods.

Regards,
Marco

QGIS CS database is severly outdated.

Hello,

I agree.
Other examples :

WGS72 (EPSG 4322)

The QGIS database contains :
+proj=longlat +ellps=WGS72 +no_defs

It should be :
+proj=longlat +ellps=WGS72 +towgs84=0,0,4.5,0,0,0.554,0.219 +no_defs
(look at http://proj.maptools.org/gen_parms.html#towgs84)

Guadeloupe 1948 (EPSG 4622)
---
The QGIS database contains :
+proj=longlat +ellps=intl +no_defs
It should be :
+proj=longlat +ellps=intl
+towgs84=-472.29,-5.63,-304.12,0.4362,-0.8374,0.2563,1.8984 +no_defs

Martinique 1938 (EPSG 4625)
---
The QGIS database contains :
+proj=longlat +ellps=intl +no_defs
It should be :
+proj=longlat +ellps=intl
+towgs84=126.93,547.94,130.41,-2.7867,5.1612,-0.8584,13.8227 +no_defs

Conclusion : Don't trust the EPSG database, allways check the parameters.
