[Qgis-user] osgeo4w not updating installation

2023-12-13 Thread Michael Dufty via QGIS-User
Hi,
Wondering if anyone can help me with my problem.
I've been experimenting with running OSGEO4w installer from command line to
update the ltr with out having to click OK 15 times.
I used the following commands -k -o -g --quiet-mode --packages qgis-ltr-full
-R "C:\OSGeo4W"

This appeared to run, and if I run setup again it shows 3.28.13-2 as installed,
but if I actually open qgis it is still 3.28.12
Even if I uninstall and reinstall with OSGEO4W-setup it remains 3.28.12
There are no standalone versions installed.

Anyone have any ideas what I might have done wrong or how to fix it? Deleting
the entire OSGeo4W directory and starting again works, but doesn't help with my
plan to make updates easier!

Re: [Qgis-user] Pro tips for beginners

2023-09-21 Thread Michael Dufty via QGIS-User
My suggestion for great features that seem to often get left out of training.

-Use view themes for all your layouts, so you can go back and edit them (and
have multiple layouts in one project)
-Drag and drop layers between projects.
-Copy and paste styles between layers.
-Copy and paste objects between layer.
-Memory Layer Saver plugin is awesome (sort of feel like I shouldn't have
projects consisting entirely of memory layers, but it actually works very well).

For bug reports - although you shouldn't expect it, it is surprising how
quickly things often get fixed (usually by Nyall Dawson at North Road).
Certainly less likely they will get fixed if no one reports them.
Sometimes preparing a proper bug report can solve your problem and reveal it
wasn't actually a bug, or at least find a workaround (last time was an issue
with my profile).

Hi All
I have asked my local AU community on any pro tips, but thought you might want
to contribute as well.
I am presenting at the next Oceania FOSS4G in October on two themes:
- Pro tips for QGIS beginners
- Putting in a QGIS bug

If you think there is anything of interest that I should include in them,
please feel free to let me know.

I am also trying to determine a term for an action that contributes to the
sustainability of the QGIS Project. My working term is Kudos Karma Action in
that you get kudos for doing it and there is karma there as you have helped
sustain the project that not only benefits the community but you as well. Any
thoughts on this

Many thanks

Good to hear that worked. Last time I tried georeferencer on webodm output it
didn't work (issue with images that already had CRS info). Sounds like the
problem may have been fixed.
1 to 2 m out does sound suspiciously like a GDA94 vs GDA2020 (current WGS84)
issue, but probably just a coincidence.

If it just a bit off, then the plugin "Freehand raster georeferencer"
can be quick to shift it, otherwise use georeferencer from core (Layer -
georeferencer), which is especially more flexible and the right tool if you
have GCPs that you can use.
Be careful, sometimes crashes can occur with certain transformation types, so
better save beforehand (autoSaver and MemoryLayerSaver are your friends).

Sound like UTM (good, metric CRS), though WGS84 might be geographic CRS (worse,
pixel size undefined/different in x,y).

Cheers
Martin

I just installed the latest update to Qgis (3.32.1-3) and noticed there was a
GDAL update so I tried clipping an ecw to mask and it appears to work now.

To respond to Kirk and Andrea’s comments.
Yes it works fine on geotiff, including geotiff created be exporting the ecw
using qgis. Not always a desirable workaround when dealing with very big ecws.
It is on Windows 10.
GDAL 3.7.1-1 from OSGEO installer
The ecw displays fine in QGIS. Output layer is set to Byte to match the source
Would be good to know if it works for anyone else.

I thought I would try with a QGIS/GDAL generated ecw to see if that helps, but
don’t seem to be able to generate an ecw either.
If I use the export layer command to generate one it says it ran successfully
but no file is generated.
If I use translate(convert format) it does give error messages as below. Not
sure if it is the same issue.
Is GDAL now using the newer ecw sdk that doesn’t support unlicensed writing?
Might need to go back to Manifold for these things.

Hi Michael:

Enhance Compression Wavelet (ECW) is a proprietary compression format. I would
try exporting your image as a geotiff to see if it is being read correctly and
does not have internal write protection on it.

[Qgis-user] Memory Layer Saver plugin temp layers not loading-resolved

2023-08-03 Thread Michael Dufty via QGIS-User
I have been having some issues with the memory layer saver plugin which I
thought might be worth sharing.
I find the plugin extremely valuable, but we may be making ourselves too
dependent on it because it works so well.
Recently the plugin was updated with a great new feature, it now saves the
.mldata file containing all the memory layers within the .qgz file instead of
as a sidecar file.
This seems to be the source of our issues with vanishing layers. We have some
users with the old version of the plugin and some with the new version.
If an old project is opened with the updated plugin, it successfully loads the
old data from the external file and moves it to the internal file.
If subsequently opening the project, it reads from the internal file. All good.
The issue is if someone opens a converted file with the older version of the
plugin. It will find the old external mldata file still there. New layers
added with the new version will be empty but old ones will still work. Any new
layers added with the old plugin will be added to the external mldata file.
If the file is then opened again with the new plugin, it seems to just use the
internal mldata, and new layers added to the old file will be missing.

In short it all works great as long as all people using the file update to the
new version plugin at the same time.
I have been able to recover lost layers by opening the qgz file with 7zip and
overwriting the internal mldata file with the modified external one. Can get
messy if there are multiple edits in both versions though.

Were running in circles for a while as we though the issue was with new
versions of qgis rather than the plugin.

The error message includes MedicalDebt.mldata as a project name. I believe
this is the file the memorylayer saver plugin creates to save the temporary
layers to. Have you tried it with that plugin disabled?

I'm really dependent on the memory layer saver plugin, and have abandoned
investigation of saving files to geopackage because memorylayer saver does not
seem to support it.

Subject: [Qgis-user] Layout export to image not cropping when draw coordinates
outside map frame enabled.

I'm having an issue exporting layouts to image. Wondering if anyone else has
found a solution.
Not sure if it is a bug or a feature.

If I have grid coordinate labels around the outside of a map frame (draw
coordinates), I find when I export as image with crop to content checked and 0
margins, I end up with a large margin of about 70 pixels around the export,
wherever the map frame is near the edge.
In the past I've used a work around, setting the text as inside the map frame,
but with a negative offset so it appears outside.
Since the latest update 3.28.4/3.30 this no longer works, the export is still
cropped correctly, but the labels vanish (visible in layout preview but not in
the image export).

Anyone have any ideas or should it be a bug report? Looks like the extra
margin may is about what would be required if the coordinates labels were
perpendicular to the frame instead of parallel.

[Qgis-user] QGIS in office 365 environment?

2023-02-15 Thread Michael Dufty via QGIS-User
We have a client who currently have all their files on OneDrive/Office365.
Has anyone had any success or failure using QGIS in this environment?

It seems like it could work using OneDrive sync so long as all data files are
kept below qgz files in the file structure.
I'm suspicious that we could end up with a lot of sync errors though, and
OneDrive doesn't seem to handle them well. They would like multiple users to
be able to access data.

They do not have a great internet connection, so I suspect may have to set up a
local fileshare or even PostgreSQL.

[Qgis-user] Georeferencer not working in 3.26.3 unless new profile

2022-10-10 Thread Michael Dufty via Qgis-user
I cannot get georeferencer to produce output in 3.26.3 on Windows 10.
On run it fails with the message Transform Failed:Could not create destination
file.
Running with the same files, settings and control points in the LTR 3.22.11
works as expected.

If I set up a new default profile it works, however I have a lot of useful
stuff in my user profile.
Anyone have an idea what the issue might be, are there user profile things I
could tweak or do I just need to start afresh adding all my customisations back
into the user profile until something breaks?

[Qgis-user] Two different raster calculators in QGIS and negative value handling - any explanation?

2022-09-07 Thread Michael Dufty via Qgis-user
It appears that there are two different native raster calculator tools in QGIS
One is found in at the top of the raster menu
The other is in the processing toolbox in the raster analysis group

(Not to mention the GDAL raster calculator and SAGA raster calculator)

Can anyone explain the reason for there being two, and what the differences are?
I've been very confused by it, mainly because the one in the raster menu does
not appear to handle negative values correctly. I'd been wondering why NDVI
type expressions with negatives randomly worked or not, and discovered it just
depended on which raster calculator I used.
Is it expected that the one in the raster menu doesn't handle negative values
correctly? It looks like it might do calculations based on unsigned integers
regardless of the input and output raster formats.

[Qgis-user] Georeferencing a geotiff issues.

2021-11-21 Thread Michael Dufty
Has anyone been able to successfully use the georeferencer to adjust alignment
on a geotiff that already has positioning data?
I've been trying to make some minor adjustments to some drone generated mosaics.
My experience is the georeferencer seems to correctly load the geotiff with CRS.
It displays the projected coordinates and records GCPs in those coordinates,
but it appears to then try to transform as though they were pixel coordinates.
Eg. the Source and destination GCP's Y values might be 6,300,000 and 6,300,010
but the dy reported is not 10, it is approximately -6,300,000
If I ignore the problem the georeferencer runs correctly, but puts the result
completely in the wrong place as suggested by the dy value.
This is happening with source, control points and destination CRS all set the
same.

Is there something I am doing wrong or is this just a bug? Seems to work fine
if I run the geotiff through and image editor to remove the initial
georeferencing.

Re: [Qgis-user] Does DWG work in 3.22? - RE: importing dwg/dxf

2021-11-21 Thread Michael Dufty
The older version of AutoCAD Civil3d I have includes AutoCAD map functions and
definitely gives you options to include CRS information in the dwg outputs.
The problem is I think the same software is the only thing that will read that
information, so I never bothered using that function. The export to shape
file feature is more useful. Not sure how many versions of AutoCAD have that
capacity, but I can't recall ever receiving any shape exports from AutoCAD.

Recent versions of QGIS seem to be handling dxf files really well, so I always
convert to that before trying to open. CADWizz is a very affordable converter
that often seems to work when other options fail.

Somebody must get the same quality of “engineering” that we do here. :D

The last item received was in feet and aligns with California State Plane Zone
6, but they chopped off the first digit of both “X” and “Y” for everything.
Who knows why. Maybe things run faster for them with 6 digit coordinates
rather than 7 digit ones like you mentioned. (???)

Anyway, when I tried the simple drag and drop into QGIS 3.22 it never worked.
Always an error message about invalid data, even after I used DWG Trueview to
convert it to the oldest possible versions (97/98 and 2000). I did manage to
get it in AFTER converting the DWG to a DXF with an online conversion site.
That DXF could be drug (I hate the word “dragged” – seems along the lines of
“runned”) into QGIS and appeared OK. Export to a shapefile and then do some
affine adjustment magic and things can be worked with.

Is there a reason that a DWG can’t be dropped into QGIS 3.22 but a DXF can?
Are there some DWG versions that just don’t work? I thought I got a DWG to
appear OK in 3.16, but maybe I just imagined it and used a DXF before too. . . .

Re: [Qgis-user] georeferencing

2021-09-02 Thread Michael Dufty
I’ve found if you tick “Use 0 for transparency when needed” in the
transformation settings, before you georeference, the bands you mention will
automatically be transparent.
This only seems to be necessary if you start with a jpeg.
If you start with a tif or png format image, that supports transparency, the
resulting image has transparent borders regardless of the setting.
This is probably the same as Nicolas’ method, just that qgis does it for you.
Nicolas’ method is more useful if you already did the georeferencing and have
not saved GCPs to do it again.

For clipping – look in the raster menu – Extraction, there are two options,
clip to extent or clip to mask layer.

Another useful trick with scanned maps is, if you have scanned a line drawing
type map that is predominantly white, try setting rendering mode to multiply –
this makes white areas completely transparent so allows you to overlay the
scanned map over other data, photos etc. very easily.

Re: [Qgis-user] Aerial photo dates in legend without RGB patches?

2021-05-25 Thread Michael Dufty
Hi Kirk,
I just want to display the date in the legend. Happy to add it manually for
each layer by editing the layer name or any other method.
Applies equally to aerials I've produced myself, purchased, been supplied by a
client or linked to a server. Assuming I know the date, how can I display it
in the legend?

Hi Michael:

Just to be clear, these are your own georeferenced aerial photo's or
professionally produced ortho photo's (as opposed to satellite imagery). If
so, where would the date field come from, the name of the image files or
perhaps embedded in the geotiff header (if using this file type)?

Alternatively is there a way to just put a manual line of text in the legend,

2021-05-17 Thread Michael Dufty
I just tried the right click in 3.18 and it does exactly what I wanted
perfectly. It allows to choose which feature to select or to select all.
It didn’t seem to be working for me previously, but I have the LTR installed as
well and may have accidentally been using that.

Would still love to know if there is any possibility of operations that trigger
prolonged indexing of web layers having a cancel option or warning.

Freehand select actually seemed to work well to get both features, which was

Radius select initiated an indexing of the whole layer which freezes QGIS for

Related question is there any way to cancel these indexing operations? Turning

Not much help, but I posted a similar question last year and did not get any
useful responses.
I couldn't even find a way to import a single custom CRS other than manually
creating and pasting in the wkt.
Might be a good feature request.
There is already something similar from 2013 on the future release - nice to
have list, though a bit more specific, possibly a good indication that it is
not currently possible.

[Qgis-user] Layout export images not cropping to content with outside grid labels

2021-03-22 Thread Michael Dufty
Hi,
I’m having an issue where if I export a layout as image, and tick the crop to
content option, the result is not cropped to the content, but has considerable
white space.
It seems to only happen where I have a grid with coordinates labelled on the
outside.

It looks like QGIS is cropping to about where the coordinate labels would be if
they were perpendicular to the edge of the map, but since I have them parallel
with the map edge, a large white space is created.
Has anyone else come across this? I can’t find any settings in the grid or map
for this.

I have found a workaround, if I select to draw coordinate labels on the inside,
then give them a negative distance to the map frame it all works as I think it
should.

Re: [Qgis-user] Do GPX files contain CRS information?

2021-03-17 Thread Michael Dufty
Since GPX (and KML) always use WGS84, I’ve been meaning to put in a feature
request for QGIS to automatically select this when exporting to those formats.
Currently it’s quite an unfriendly experience to export to these formats from
QGIS as there are lots of options, many of which (like choosing an unsuitable
CRS) will give you a file that really doesn’t work.

It does look like someone else already did this 7 years ago and it is on the
“nice to have list”

If we don't need point clouds, can we just wait and eventually OSGEO4W will
catch up, or are we going to eventually have to uninstall and reinstall anyway.

On past evidence windows 10 will screw up all the default apps and icons if I
uninstall and reinstall, so I'll probably wait if that is going to work
eventually.

Re: [Qgis-user] saving all temporary layers?

2021-01-21 Thread Michael Dufty
Not exactly what you are asking for, so it may not suit, but I find the “memory
layer saver” plugin invaluable.
When using this memory layers are not lost when you close QGIS

The plugin description says
“Makes layers with memory data providers persistent
so that they are restored when a project is closed and reopened.
The memory provider data is saved in a portable binary format (QDataStream)
that is saved with extension .mldata alongside the project file.”

I’m not sure if the .mldata file is useful as an export format.

It also does not seem to work with temporary raster files.

You can drag and drop memory layers from one QGIS instance to another (at least
in 3.16). They will then persist separately in both QGIS files if you have the
memory layer saver plugin installed.

For some reason need to import from dwg instead of dxf, or re-export to gpkg

Hi Mike:

I usually convert the contours or breaklines into a point layer and then
generate a dem from that. This is not a precise methodology but it would
depend on what you are trying to do and the precision of the underlying data.

The links for Nicolas are quite useful, but I think to create a raster DEM from
vector lines you probably need to use the interpolate triangulation with
breaklines or structure lines.
The dialogue takes a bit of getting used to, you need to choose the layer the
data will come from, click + then in the box below choose whether the layer is
being used for points, breaklines or structure lines.

I’ve had major issues with the interpolation crashing QGIS if I try to used it
with breaklines for complex imported data, but it seems to work OK for simple
test geometries, and may be good for a simple excavation.

I’d be interested to know if anyone has had success with interpolation using
breaklines for more complex data, I’ve had to resort to other software trying
to import DEM supplied as dxf 3d faces, but maybe I’m missing a basic step like
fixing geometry or removing duplicates.

[Qgis-user] Sharing a custom User CRS

2020-12-08 Thread Michael Dufty
Hi,
I’ve just figured out how to set up an oblique Mercator custom CRS to allow
visualising data in local mine grids in QGIS.
I’d now like to share the CRS with other users.
At the moment I have sent the wkt definition as a text file with instructions
on how to add it in settings-custom projections, but that seems a bit awkward.
Does anyone know a better way to do it?

I have also exported data with a .prj file, but although this works for the
exported dataset I don’t see any way to save the CRS from the prj into QGIS for
use with other data.

2020-09-21 Thread Michael Dufty
Thanks Yoann,
Exactly what I was looking for. I will see if I can add this to the user guide
in 17.2.2.6.1. It looks like leaving it blank follows the Map CRS though, not
the project CRS.
It would be nice if the CRS selection control for the grid was similar to that
for the map, with a drop down allowing to choose to follow the map, or the
project, or set manually.
An easier but helpful change might be for the button to display “Map CRS”
rather than “Change…” when nothing is selected.

Hi Michael.

You have to keep it blank. If no CRS is set for the grid, it uses the map's
CRS. When you first add the grid to the map, its CRS is unset by default (at
least in QGIS 3.10).
However, there is not an obvious option to clear the grid CRS once you have set
it.
The trick is to select a section (i.e "Geographic Coordinate Systems") in the
CRS Selector instead of a specific CRS, then to click OK.

Good point on the security, so far we’ve been relying on the server only being

Agree, strongly. Even better to have an independent authentication system (e.g.
LDAP) that everything uses but at minimum, separate PostgreSQL accounts for
everybody is highly recommended.

Thanks Bo,
What are the risks of DB Manager? I’m using it exactly because it is point and
click, the layers to be loaded are saved all over the place and need to be
found and identified one by one in QGIS projects, so seems much easier to do
from within qgis if it is reasonably safe. I figure they can always be

Re: [Qgis-user] Options when loading layers into PostGIS with DBManager

2020-04-19 Thread Michael Dufty
Answering my own question again.
It does look like leaving everything alone works pretty well.
Primary key unchecked results in a primary key being set up with the id column
as shown in grey. This caused a problem when the layer had a pre-existing
non-unique id column. Works fine if the existing id column has unique values,
or does not exist.
Leaving the geometry column unticked seems to create a geom column (as shown in
grey).
If a spatial index is needed and wasn’t ticked, a warning will show in db
manager afterwards and it is easy to create one from there.

Just needs the documentation update to say not to worry about it. A bit like
the lack of documentation on how to upgrade an existing install. It doesn’t
seem to matter what you do, but you can waste a lot of time trying to look it
up if too cautious.

Hi,
I am trying out saving data in PostGIS, and have got stuck on the upload

Can anyone recommend a good reference on what options should be selected?
It seems to fall into a gap between PostGIS documentation and QGIS

what circumstances.

In particular
Primary key – should this be ticked and the existing id field selected? What
happens if it is left unticked?
Geometry column – is this needed? Objects still seem to have geometry if it is
left out.
Create spatial index – this sounds like a good idea, but the one youtube
tutorial I found (Klas Karlson) he left it unticked and said the layer already
had everything. Is it needed for some source formats and not others eg
shapefile vs geopackage?

Convert field names to lower case doesn’t sound very useful, but I presume it
is there for a reason, does anyone know the circumstances that would be needed?

Thanks Jorge,
The DB manager also 'just works' apparently regardless of which boxed I tick.
I'd just like to know what is going on or if I'm setting myself up for a
problem later on if I load up 200 layers with the wrong boxes ticked.

Looking more closely, it has got text greyed out if you don't check a box,
which may mean it is setting it to the defaults shown, and you only check the
box if you want to change it.

It would be nice to know more rather than guessing.

An alternative is to use the "Browser panel". I use it to drag layers from the

works.

[Qgis-user] Options when loading layers into PostGIS with DBManager

2020-04-19 Thread Michael Dufty
Hi,
I am trying out saving data in PostGIS, and have got stuck on the upload
“import layer/file” dialog in DB Manager.

Can anyone recommend a good reference on what options should be selected?
It seems to fall into a gap between PostGIS documentation and QGIS
documentation and I can’t find any information on what should be selected in
what circumstances.

Cheers,

Re: [Qgis-user] QGIS in the commercial world

2020-04-15 Thread Michael Dufty
Sustaining membership works out a bit steep for us if you follow the guideline
– about 10 times what we currently pay for commercial software (Manifold).
Is it reasonable to interpret number of employees as GIS users rather than
total employees?
I see my local council is on there as small, and I’m sure they have more than
10 employees.

Obviously no limits apply if we go with donations without membership.

Dear Iain,

Yes, QGIS has an entity: QGIS.ORG is the worldwide association of QGIS users
and developers. QGIS.ORG is constituted as a Swiss ‘association’
(https://qgis.org/en/site/getinvolved/governance/charter.html) but it is not a
registered charity.

To help support QGIS, organizations are invited to become sustaining members of
QGIS.ORG. The details of our sustaining membership program are described in:
https://qgis.org/en/site/getinvolved/governance/sustaining_members/sustaining_members.html

You can also see who's already supporting QGIS:
https://qgis.org/en/site/about/sustaining_members.html

Regards,

Anita

Re: [Qgis-user] Sharing project files

2020-04-06 Thread Michael Dufty
I find the “Memory Layer Saver” plugin very useful, but it doesn’t seem to work
for raster layers, so may not work for Dave in this case.
If I recall correctly I think the make permanent button may not appear on
raster layers either.
Generating contours to a temporary file also seems to be a special case in that
they save to a temporary file rather than a memory layer so neither of the
above options work.
In these cases you need to “save as” the temporary layers to preserve them (or
create them as permanent layers in the first place using the processing
options).

Hi Dave,

indeed, temporary layers are only .. well .. temporary.
There are two ways to make them permanent (afaik):

a) Install the temporary layer saver plugin. This will save those layers within
the project file
b) Don't know if this option already exists in 3.4, but in the context menu of
a temporary layer, there should be the option "Make permanent ...", so you can
save it to disk. If it is not present in 3.4, update to 3.10 LTR or to the
latest 3.12

[Qgis-user] Always render as raster losing opacity control and simplify vector layers

2020-03-20 Thread Michael Dufty
I’ve had an interesting couple of days dealing with PDF sizes. We have a very
large vector layer of flood model output, being put into an A3 map covering a
large area.
Initially this produced a 5MB ish PDF, but at some stage the PDF size jumped to
30MB. It looks like the new “simplify geometries to reduce output size” option
was not working.
We were able to get around this by forcing the layer to render as a raster in
the layer properties.
A couple of days later we decided the layer should have 100% opacity instead of
80%.
The opacity displayed correctly in the main map and layout, but in the PDF
exports it stayed stubbornly at 80%.
Turning off the force to render as raster allowed the opacity to display
correctly again. The file size stayed low too, so simplify geometries seems to
work again.

At this stage we have solved the practical problem, but I’m still curious about
the underlying issue.

Switching back to render as raster broke it again.
Re-adding the shapefile did not work.
Forcing another layer to render as raster resulted in both correct behaviour on
the new layer, and fixing the problem on the old layer.
Turning off the forcing on the second layer, results in the first layer playing
up again.

Initial issues were using 3.10.1 now on 3.12.

Anyone have a clue what might be going on?
Seems like there might be a cached version of the rasterization somewhere, but
it recurs even if I change the colour.
I notice raster layers have opacity set in a different place to vector layers,
so perhaps the opacity level for the generated raster layer has somehow been
saved somewhere.
