Re: [Qgis-user] Micro-Geometry Problems

2020-01-16 Thread Mike Shand
Steve (or any new QGIS users),

For future reference, it is maybe better practice to digitise polygon sides
simply as lines and then use one of the line>polygon tools in QGIS, GRASS or
SAGA. Advantages are that you only digitise the lines once (much quicker, no
double digitising) and so only require to use snapping at junctions (less
change of snapping errors). Main disadvantage is that you would have to add
your polygon attribute data after the polygons have been generated rather than
as you digitise them.

incomplete intersections.

Hi,
There's also a "snap geometries to layer" Processing algorithm in QGIS that
could be worth a look.

In my opinion this is where GRASS topological vector model shines. One
suggestion would be to import these vectors into a GRASS location and let GRASS
clean the polygons and fix the topology automatically during import. My
experience with similar problems is that after the import and cleaning there
would be few if any errors of the sort you mention. In the worst case any
surviving error is found it could in principle be solved by deleting the
stubborn surface and digitizing it again. It will definitely not take two weeks
of work!

Good luck!

But in 582 out of 2799 polygons, there are mis-matches in adjoining vertices
that are only evident if you zoom into the layer at a magnification (i.e., a
scale) of from 2:1 to 4 to 1. I have spent a couple of weeks trying to
remedy these by hand using the Vertex Tool and other means. My question is
this: is there an automated way in QIS to detect and remedy these situations?

2019-01-13 Thread Mike Shand

Hi Rutger,

It would be useful to know the source for the digitised contours and the
procedure you used to create the shapefile.

You may have three options:
1. Go back to Adobe Illustrator and digitise some well defined known
reference points such as grid intersections or road junctions, with this
it should be possible in QGIS to move, scale and rotate the vector
contours to fit OpenStreetMap or OS Opendata online imagery of Mull and
Iona.
2. Request someone with the QGIS plug-ins qgisAffine or VectorBender
working to do the transformation for you.
3. Request someone with ArcGIS Spatial Adjustment to do the
transformation for you.

Mike

I can’t get the qgisAffine or VectorBender plugins to work on qgis

Laurence,

In Print Composer on the COMPOSITION tab you will find a World file on
tick box which will give you the required tfw, jgw, pgw etc files for
your exported raster. It is not on the Item tab as you may have more
than one map item to compose (e.g. inset or location map).

A quick-and-dirty solution may be to fake the tiff that was exported
from the composer and georefernce it against your project, and save
that as a geotiff.

to be quite a challenge with qGIS.

I have a qGIS project with different shapefiles. If I use
/project/save as image/ and create a .tiff file, then use
/raster/conversion/translate/ the tiff file into a geotiff, the
result is georeferenced. But the map itself is not very exciting.

If I use the composer to create the .tiff file and then use
/raster/conversion/translate/ the tiff file into a geotiff (as in
the previous case), the final map is not georeferenced.

At this stage I'm kind of lost, as the composer allows setting
like GDAL, CRS etc.. and everything seems to be set properly.

I'm on Windows7 pro, with qGIS Wien 2.8.3 (I've got a rendering
pbe with version 2.10 which forced me to downgrade to 2.8).

Would someone have any ideas? What's the best practice to create
geo referenced tif or pdf?

Re: [Qgis-user] GPS issue on android tablet

2014-06-04 Thread Mike Shand

Zoltan,

I suggest you create a Csv file and plot the points on a large scale map
or hi-res satellite image.
You say varies very widely, a quick check indicated the max. variation
between your points is approx 8m and the min. approx 1m.

I would say if you are getting 3m GPS accuracy that is pretty good if
you are outside the US or Europe. I assume you are using a dedicated
GPS unit attached to your Tablet and not a built-in GPS on your Tablet.
Bear in mind that the 3m accuracy deviation (imagine a 3m radius circle
from where you mark the point) can be in any direction, so if you are 3m
E out with first reading and 3m W with the second reading the error
between the point could be 6m.

Is that depending on GPS device or could it be a software related
issue?

There are probably 1 reasons for this.
I am surprised that you even think you are getting sub 5m accuracy.
Please plot the points on a cadastral map (or some basemap that is
guaranteed accurate) and see what you are really getting.
You also don't say whether you are in a tree'd or urban (or whatever)
area - but observing 9 satellites suggests somewhere in the open.

For professional GPSes, to get sub 10cm accuracy, you need to observe
for 30-60 minutes, and do post processing.

I am not a surveyor, so my info may be not 100% - Please can a surveyor
or someone well experienced in these issues chip in.

Hi Sarah,

I think what you may have for (N 3904,668 - E 1652,784) is actually
degrees, minutes and decimal minutes:

N 39d 04min .668dec min (or 40.08sec [.668*60]) = N 39d 04min 40.08 sec
E 16d 52min .784 dec min (or 47.04sec [.784*60]) = N 16d 52min 47.04 sec
or in decimal degrees
N 39.0778
E 16.879733
This puts the point about 7km south of Roccabernarda.

In the UK and US a dot is usually the decimal point, in Europe a comma
is often the decimal point.

Regards,
Mike

 should fall in the vicinity of coordinates: N 391373746 - E 16,8745837
(Roccabernarda in the province of Crotone).

N 3906.065 E 1657.129

N 3905.403 E 1701.755

N 3909.825 E 1659.315

N 3909.479 E 1657.053

N 3912.038 E 1655.576

N 3912.436 E 1656.515

N 3911.148 E 1659.506

N 3911.347 E 1659.521

N 3911.824 E 1659.739

They should all fall in the province of Crotone in Calabria, Italy,
but nothing I've tried gets them there :-(.

To give an idea, the coordinates with an asterix (N 3904,668 - E
1652,784) should fall in the vicinity of coordinates: N 391373746 - E
16,8745837 (Roccabernarda in the province of Crotone).

Thanks for any help, and my apologies if the answer is so simple a
primary school kid could get there :-(, Sarah.

Re: [Qgis-user] Query re: Area measures

2013-09-13 Thread Mike Shand

Hi Hugh,

I did some work recently on the Tanzania 2012 Census District file from
downloaded from the NBS website plus the census data.
I converted the Arc60 lat/long file to a projected WGS 84 UTM zone 36S
file in QGIS, calculated the Geometry in sqkms then exported the file to
WGS84 lat/long. This seemed to work fine as I was then able to
calculate the population density.

Any problems I can send it offline.

Mike

Grateful for any advice more experienced users can offer.

Re: [Qgis-user] QGIS to ArcGIS

2013-06-04 Thread Mike Shand

HI Andreas,

As both an ArcGIS and QGIS user I often run courses and workshops for
new or potential users particularity in the UK and Africa.

I currently have a client who uses ArcGIS as their main mapping software
but has limited licences available. They wish to have their field staff
trained in using basic GIS to import and view GPS data collected in the
field over GIS features (rivers, roads, admin bdys etc) or Google/Bing
imagery with a view to producing location type maps for draft reports
while out of the office. It is then their intention to bring the maps
into ArcGIS to enable their professional GIS cartographers to produce
any final mapping. It would be ideal to be able to bring both the QGIS
symbol design and layout into ArcGIS rather than having to redo this
work again in ArcGIS using the GIS data files (shapefile; gpx etc).

As I suspected it now looks like this will be the only solution, I will
therefore encourage the client to create custom symbol specifications
and layout templates to ensure the mapping has a consistent design and
layout. QGIS will undertake all the data input and analysis tasks
required by the client's field staff and has many other advantages of
use due to is portable nature.

As a professional cartographer I find the symbol design and layout
facilities in QGIS very limiting for producing publication quality maps
and would normally undertake any final map design and production in
ArcGIS or Adobe Illustrator (with Avenza MaPublisher).

Thanks to all for their comments.

Regards,
Mike

Re: [Qgis-user] QGIS to ArcGIS

2013-06-04 Thread Mike Shand
You can see some of the maps made with only QGIS at
http://www.flickr.com/groups/qgis/pool
Some very impressive maps, QGIS can do most mapping tasks and does them
very well, I look forward to the official release of QGIS 2.0.
Does it now support both CMYK and RGB for symbol design and has any
changes been made to the Print Composer and its export options ?

That's very surprising: please be specific as to what is missing for you.
It is difficult to be specific and it could be quite a long list. Even
with ArcGIS I find there are limitations on customised symbol design and
layout facilities, so often Adobe Illustrator is my choice for final
mapping and GIS for map analysis and manipulation of spatial data.My
main gripe about both ArcGIS and QGIS is the unfriendly nature of Page
Layout and Print Composer. I guess that being a cartographer for over
40 years (GIS user for over 20 years) I am probably too demanding on my
mapping software as I desire to be able to easily customise everything
from a design and layout point of view and will never accept default
solutions.

Hi Andreas,

Many thanks for your extensive response which makes some very good
points and has enlightened me on recent improvements that exist in v2.0.
I will take on board your suggestions and also monitor more closely the
posts on the QGIS list and on GIS stackexchange.

Hi Mike,

As to your initial request about converesion from QGIS to ArcGIS
projects or vice versa I still think that is very unlikely to happen. It
is a kind of Sisyphus work where you are never finished and whenever
there are new versions of either software you are set back again. Also
neither the mxd nor the qgs format is stable and documented. So do not
expect this to happen.

-

As others have pointed out, QGIS 2.0 adds a lot for better cartography:

* easier print composer (with snapping/guidelines)
* new HTML widget and improved text area, optionally with expressions
* better serial printing
* blending in the print composer
* multi-column legends and more legend options

Labeling:
* many more font-properties
* expressions for data-defined properties
* label backgrounds: simple shapes or SVG
* drop shadows
* easy to work with layers where parts of the features are manually
labeled and others automatically

Blending

Symbology:
* data-defined symbology with expressions on the symbol level
* separation of layer grouping and layer order
* improved rule-based symbology
* units can be mixed (e.g. you can define an offset value in m and the
stroke-width in mm)

The expression editor has many more functions that are quite powerful
and can be used with symbology and labeling.

If you can point us to the missing features that still force you to use
ArcGIS or Illustrator, please let us know. It is the goal of the QGIS
community to provide a tool where the cartographers do not have to
export their work to finish it in a different software. We want to be as
good as or better as ArcGIS regarding Cartography.

Often there is also the case that people do not know all the features of
QGIS and simply do not know how to accomplish things with QGIS. In this
case it may be good to consult this mailinglist or GIS stackexchange.
Sometimes also the help or manual could/should be improved.

One such case is that people have the impression that they cannot easily
move, rotate and scale text in QGIS, but once you add the necessary
data-base fields that is easily possible.

If you have concrete proposals, please consider writing feature requests.

Thank you,
Andreas

[Qgis-user] QGIS to ArcGIS

2013-06-03 Thread Mike Shand

Dear Users,

Am I correct in thinking that it is currently not possible to convert a
QGIS project file (.qgs) to an ArcGIS map file (.mxd).

I know it can be done in reverse using the MXD2QGS Tool in ArcToolbox.
