[Qgis-user] Local Government for QGIS
I am not sure this is the correct forum for a start to this discussion, but I've been pondering this for a while and interested what others think. I work for local government in the U.S. and when people generally talk about GIS there is no doubt an automatic association with the ESRI ArcGIS platform. And beyond GIS itself, the dominance that ESRI has is even more pronounced given the fact that many cities have implemented other related systems (permitting, computer aided dispatch, etc) that are identified business partners with ESRI. Furthermore, the "GIS Local Government" track that ESRI developed has evolved to offer an "turnkey" approach for local government self-service to establish a robust geodatabase (Local Government Information Model), maps, apps, web services, etc. This extends a COTS approach for local governments to establish, develop, and maintain a fairly complete GIS. In my opinion, pure genius...because for a lot of small cities/governments with limited staff and budget, the turnkey approach is very appealing. For city bureaucrats thinking about implementing/extending GIS, what they might think as little $$$ and you get all of this? Awesome...here's my money. HOWEVER, this approach has its drawbacks. Long-term license/use costs, vendor lock-in, continuous waiting for someone at the company to fix somethingwell, the list goes on (just read any blog post supporting open source/FOSS). So, with the evolution of QGIS as a prevailing replacement/alternative for the other product, is anyone thinking about building more of a turnkey approach (database, maps, apps, web services, etc) geared to local governments? I like the direction of the OpenGeo platform (and others) trying to provide the whole software stack, but still if a small local government wants to have a full fledged interactive GIS, it might seem like a lot of work to develop and maintain. I am interested in other thoughts...perhaps this belongs on a blog post somewhere more independent, but perhaps this can be a place to begin. Re: [Qgis-user] mxd file to qgs usin Qgis?
Based on my previous searches and implementations, you need a copy of ArcMap along with other plugins (open source: ArcMap2SLD or Mxd2Qgs; paid: FME) to make these "transformations" (ArcMap projects to QGIS projects) possible. If you only need to convert mxd files in the short term, ESRI offers a 60-day free trial . Also, please be aware that the mxd file is just a wrapper. The geospatial data is actually independent from this file and likely interoperable with QGIS (most data formats are). Once opened in QGIS, you'll just have to create/assign symbology, labels, etc. -Steve -- View this message in context: http://osgeo-org.1560.x6.nabble.com/mxd-file-to-qgs-usin-Qgis-tp5152907p5153372.html Sent from the Quantum GIS - User mailing list archive at Nabble.com. ___ Qgis-user mailing list Qgis-user@lists.osgeo.org http://lists.osgeo.org/mailman/listinfo/qgis-user
Re: [Qgis-user] QGIS - Android
I have installed QGIS for Android on a couple of Asus devices and a Samsung SIII. Based on my previous experience (although I haven't installed in a while), you have to install the nightly build. Also make sure that you have Ministro installed before installing QGIS for Android (I can't recall now, but I think it prompts you if don't already have it installed). I have version 9.6.8 installed (this is Ministro II by BogDan Vatra in the Android Play Store). It would be helpful for others if you are successful installing and report back. I am not sure this is the "exact" forum for posting, but since its sort of part of the QGIS ecosystem, I think it is fine. [Qgis-user] Functionality matrix
Sorry to cross-post...but figured more people are reading threads in this list... Does anyone know of a functionality matrix/list of functions for QGIS? I am seeking to find comparisons of functions in QGIS to another proprietary desktop GIS software provider (starts with "E", ends with "I"). I have seen the features chapter in the users guide/manual, but looking for something more complete and in a list format if possible. http://osgeo-org.1560.x6.nabble.com/Re-Qgis-community-team-Qgis-community-team-Digest-Vol-59-Issue-4-tp5032208.html Steve G -- View this message in context: http://osgeo-org.1560.x6.nabble.com/Functionality-matrix-tp5128423.html Sent from the Quantum GIS - User mailing list archive at Nabble.com. ___ Qgis-user mailing list Qgis-user@lists.osgeo.org http://lists.osgeo.org/mailman/listinfo/qgis-user
Re: [Qgis-user] Spatialite VIEW in QGIS question
This does not directly answer your question about spatialite views, but you might be able to use relationships directly in QGIS in the near future (I think this is a 2.1 update). It should work: http://hub.qgis.org/projects/android-qgis/wiki/Tested_Devices I was able to install on a Samsung Galaxy SIII (Android 4.1.2) and Asus TF300T (Android 4.2.1) using the nightly build (I had similar results with the recommended download and install...it failed). Did you install Ministro? This also has to be installed. If you have idx files (spatial index) associated with the shapefile, it might be corrupted. Re: [Qgis-user] Convert Arc projects (MXD) in QGIS
I have been able to dig into this a bit more (i.e. mxd to qgis). Just want to report another handy tool that I recently found: ArcMap2SLD <http://arcmap2sld.geoinform.fh-mainz.de/ArcMap2SLDConverter_Eng.htm> . I have just started to use the tool and it works pretty well to create SLD files for polygons and lines (I am using ArcMap 9.3, but imagine it works similarly for 10.x, just be sure to use the correct version). For point symbols I have found that if your project uses unique ESRI symbols (ESRI fonts/styles), those don't convert into SLD. A couple of notes based on my experience: -I did not find the setup.exe as found in the install notes (I was using version 1.2.2.1, I see that 1.3 has a setup.exe file). I followed this blog post <http://www.web-maps.com/gisblog/?p=75> . I had an open session of ArcMap running with the layers that I wanted converted. I then ran ..\ArcMap2SLD\bin\ArcGIS_SLD_Converter.exe file. -Under Extras, I selected Layers>In separate files. This creates a unique SLD file for each layer in the mxd file) with the resulting file name: file name+layer name (layer name from ArcMap) -In QGIS add the vectors as normal. For each layer I then loaded the Style (SLD)...Go into Properties>Load Style... -The ArcMap Labeling properties did not convert to SLD (TextSymbolizer is supposed to be supported) I hope this helps anyone who is converting their mxd files to QGIS. If anyone has any additional tips, please add to this thread. -Steve G -- View this message in context: http://osgeo-org.1560.x6.nabble.com/Convert-Arc-projects-MXD-in-QGIS-tp5077193p5085191.html Sent from the Quantum GIS - User mailing list archive at Nabble.com. ___ Qgis-user mailing list Qgis-user@lists.osgeo.org http://lists.osgeo.org/mailman/listinfo/qgis-user

Re: [Qgis-user] Convert Arc projects (MXD) in QGIS
I tried this tool several months ago. Unless something has changed with the scripting, I can confirm that the tool transfers all of your layers displayed in your mxd project to QGIS, however, none of the symbology. I guess it's a start if you want to reproduce your mxd project in QGIS, but IMHO, the real work is creating the symbology. -Steve -- View this message in context: http://osgeo-org.1560.x6.nabble.com/Convert-Arc-projects-MXD-in-QGIS-tp5077193p5077758.html Sent from the Quantum GIS - User mailing list archive at Nabble.com. ___ Qgis-user mailing list Qgis-user@lists.osgeo.org http://lists.osgeo.org/mailman/listinfo/qgis-user
