We're just on time for organizing a QGIS user meeting + hackfest
within or adjacent to the next foss4g in Barcelona, I've been talking
to the organizers, but we should take a decision on this now so that I
can start taking the necessary steps soon. Planing and organization
of the foss4g conference takes a long time.

yes - +1 for me ;-)
It is a good idea to expose more universities to QGIS. After all it is the
students that somehow can infiltrate government orgs/companies with
open-source software.
Maybe we could also invite the geographers or other university
institutions (which I still know from my university time in Vienna) to
join a QGIS presentation as well.
Perhaps you could run a workshop on open-source geospatial as well? I
know a good set of source materials :)
I'd like to suggest Lancaster University as a location for a hackfest
in the future. Cheap accommodation in the student halls, cheap flights
from the US to Manchester Airport, cheap trains for the Europeans
maybe. Cheap beer.
I have been wondering if 'Hackfest' is the right name. Clearly 'code
sprint' is wrong since there's other things to do apart from coding,
but I'm not sure if the 'hack' in 'Hackfest' is quite right. How does
"QGis Development Days", or 'Dev Days" sound? Not as catchy... Other
ideas?
I have no problem with hackfest...its short & snappy and keeps (some of)
the people happy. That said I have this kinda daft and crazy idea to
make a yearly conference with a not-only-hacking focus. The idea would
be to host a kinda mini academic conference where for the first day we
have poster sessions, talks and paper presentations. After that we
commence with hacking proper. I know it will probably be humble
beginnings, but I would like to see QGIS establish itself as a research
platform both for the idea in and of itself, and because of the
inevitable trickle down effect that will happen with new features and
improvements making their way into QGIS.
